Elderly couple killed in accident
Samrala, December 5
Policemen inspect a car that hit the elderly couple near Rajewal village in Ludhiana. An elderly couple was killed in a road accident near Rajewal village on the Samrala Khanna road. The deceased were identified as 70-year-old Balwant Singh and his wife 65-year-old Joginder Kaur.

Ragpicker’s death marred by questions
Ludhiana, December 5
The death of 35-year-old ragpicker Manoj Kumar, who died on December 1, has raised a question over the working of the police. On November 27, residents of Issewal village intercepted Manoj Kumar mistaking him for a thief. Manoj was beaten up. His companions Pankaj and Manjeet were also thrashed by the residents.

Kidnapped boy found dead 
Ludhiana, December 5
The nine-year-old boy who was kidnapped from Moti Nagar yesterday was found dead at a house in Jeevan Nagar on Chandigarh Raod today. The deceased was identified as Sandeep. The accused, Raja, deceased's uncle, dumped his body in his house at Street No 26 and fled, the police said.

The striking employees while away time in Ludhiana on Thursday. Work came to a standstill in government officials following a two-day pen-down strike by the State Ministerial Services’ Association. Residents visiting the offices were at the receiving end as they had to return disappointed. The protesting employees gathered in front of their offices and raised anti-government slogans.

Parents accuse school authorities of abusing children, hold protest 
Jagraon, December 5
The school authorities try to pacify the parents at a school in Jagraon on Thursday. High drama was witnessed at Roop Vatika School, Jagraon, when the family members of students studying in the school raised slogans against the school authorities. The protesting parents alleged that the school authorities were pressurising the students to buy new uniforms from the school premises.

The birth anniversary of Punjabi poet Bhai Veer Singh was celebrated in the city today. A programme was organised at Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle to commemorate the occasion. Prof Baljinder Pal Singh from the language and literature wing of the organisation said, "The poet is considered Wordsworth of Punjabi literature."

Flag code to be followed
Ludhiana, December 5
After three years, the organisers of World Cup Kabaddi will follow the international flag code this time. Earlier, when kabaddi cup was held in Punjab and during 2010 Punjab Games, the flag code was not followed by the authorities and the flags were displayed as per the names of the countries in an alphabetical order.

Debit card PIN must for shopping: RBI 
Ludhiana, December 5
According to the new RBI mandate, from December 1 onwards, the debit card users are required to use their existing ATM PIN for shopping. Banks are also sending SMSes to the costumers to inform about the same.

Ludhiana: A four-member delegation of farm scientists from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, and a representative of Confederation of Potato Seed Farmers (POSCON), Punjab, visited Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) to review the progress of experiments on seed potato quality in the department of agronomy, PAU. Jang Bhahadur Singh Sangha, member, board of management, PAU, represented POSCON.

Ludhiana: The department of veterinary medicine, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, has got a development project worth Rs 45 lakh under the Funds for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure in Higher Educational Institutions programme of the department of science and technology, Government of India.

In-laws booked for assault
Amloh, December 5
The Amloh police have booked five persons following a complaint by Amandeep Kaur, a resident of Sounti village, near here, today. According to DSP Amloh Parshotam Singh Ball and SHO Savinderpal Singh the victim, Amandeep Kaur, complained to the police that her in-laws allegedly assaulted her and demanded dowry.

Jail inmates should concentrate more on sports activities as it will help them avoid drug addiction and other evils in society and ensures a bright future. This was stated by Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary of Legal Services Authority, K K Singla, today while addressing the jail inmates during the ongoing prison Olympiad on the premises of Central Jail, Ludhiana.
