visakhapatnam, November 24 Coming in at 185/5, Sammy added 82 for the sixth wicket with Lendl Simmons in 12.3 overs, a partnership that took West Indies decisively towards victory. Sammy, by far the more aggressive of the two, contributed 49 to Simmons’s 30 runs in the partnership. When Simmons was out for 62 (72b, 5x4, 1x6), West Indies were 267/6 and needed only 22 more for victory, off 18 balls. Sammy reached his half-century off the first ball of the next over. Off the third ball, Jason Holder hit a four and then took a single off the fourth. Sammy struck a four and a six off the next two balls, to finish with 16 off the over. This left West Indies needing to score six off two overs to win the game. Holder and Sunil Narine fell in the next over, but the score by then was 286 and the match was practically over by then. West Indies needed three off the final over and fittingly, Sammy finished it off with a single to the deep midwicket fence. Sammy remained unbeaten on 63 off 45 balls, having hit 4 fours and an equal number of sixers. Kieran Powell (59 off 70 balls) and Darren Bravo (50 off 54) were the other two half-centurions for the visitors. Earlier, Virat Kohli missed out on a hundred by just one run before skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's fiery knock propelled India to a challenging 288 for seven. Electing to bowl, unsure of how the wicket would behave after two days of incessant rains, West Indies kept India under pressure for most of the time but the hosts scored 62 runs off the last five overs to steal the thunder from the men from the Caribbean. Kohli showed calmness to soothe the nerves but only to fall victim to a rash pull as India were in danger after losing two wickets for 15 runs in the batting Powerplay. But once again captain cool Dhoni rose to the challenge with an unbeaten 51, his 50th ODI half-century, to give India a decent total to defend. Dhoni slammed three sixes and four boundaries in his 40-ball knock in an entertaining 47-run seventh wicket partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin. Earlier, Sharma had a rare off day at his mother's hometown when he was taken at second slip to bring an end to a dream run, during which he scored one double ton, two 100s and an equal number of half-centuries in his last five outings. After Sharma's dismissal India crawled to 48/1 in the first Powerplay. The West Indies clearly had an upper hand dismissing the other opener, Shikhar Dhawan, with an addition of another 48 runs. Included in place of Narsingh Deonarine, Veersammy Permaul made the Indians sweat under the scorching sun, reducing them to 69/2 after Dhawan miscued one against the turn to be caught at slip. — Agencies India Sharma c Sammy b Rampaul 12 Dhawan lbw b Permaul 35 Kohli c Holder b Rampaul 99 Yuvraj c Samuels b Sammy 28 Raina c Bravo b Rampaul 23 Dhoni not out 51 Jadeja b Rampaul 10 Ashwin c Charles b Holder 19 Bhuvneshwar not out 1 Extras: (LB-1, WD-9) 10 Total: (7 wkts in 50 ovrs) 288 Fall of wickets: 1-21, 2-69, 3-138, 4-203, 5-209, 6-240, 7-287 Bowling Rampaul 10-0-60-4 Holder 10-0-63-1 Bravo 8-0-54-0 Permaul 10-0-55-1 Narine 10-2-39-0 Sammy 1-0-11-1 Simmons 1-0-5-0 West Indies Charles c & b Kumar 12 Powell st Dhoni b Ashwin 59 Samuels c Dhoni b Sharma 8 DM Bravo c Dhoni b Ashwin 50 Simmons lbw b Jadeja 62 DJ Bravo c Dhawan b Kumar 18 Sammy not out 63 Holder c Dhoni b Shami 7 Narine c Rayudu b Shami 0 Permaul not out 0 Extras: 10 (lb 7, w 3) Total: (8 wickets; 49.3 overs) 289 Fall of wickets: 1-14, 2-23, 3-123, 4-147, 5-185, 6-267, 7-285, 8-285 Bowling B Kumar 9-1-56-2 Sharma 6.3-0-48-1 Shami 7-0-55-2 Ashwin 10-1-37-2 Raina 7-0-42-0 Jadeja 10-1-44-1 |
Gauti, Zak in fray for African Safari
Vadodra, November 24 While the Indian ODI squad is likely to be selected on the expected lines with almost all the members of the team playing against West Indies set to be retained, the Test squad can have a few interesting selections. The attention will be entirely on Gambhir and Zaheer's entry into the squad as the additional opener and fifth pacer. Gambhir, who led from the front in Delhi's win with a knock of 153, has so far scored 372 runs in six innings in Ranji Trophy this season at a healthy average of 74 plus. He also has a couple of half-centuries in the match against Mumbai. With Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan having sealed the first XI openers' slot, Gambhir will be vying for that reserve opener's place as Ajinkya Rahane has been earmarked as a middle-order batsman in longer format. While Virat Kohli is expected to be promoted as No 4 with Sachin Tendulkar's retirement, Rahane is likely to be inducted in the playing XI as No 6 batsman with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni coming in at No 7. Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma are automatic choices as Nos 3 and 5 respectively. Offie Ravichandran Ashwin is likely to be the lone spinner in the playing XI while fight for the second spinner's slot will be between Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha. Ojha's last Test appearance in Mumbai recently got him a match haul of 10 wickets while Jadeja is a much better batsman. Axe could fall on leg-spinner Amit Mishra as India can't afford to select three specialist spinners in a country where pitches are conducive for fast bowling. Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar have already sealed their spots in the playing XI with some good performances. Ishant Sharma is also in the fray after his 9-wicket haul against Haryana. Umesh Yadav has only got four wickets in two Ranji Trophy games for Vidarbha but his pace is something that Dhoni would be looking out for. The fifth pacer's slot will be an interesting one as Zaheer's fate hangs in balance as he will fight it out with R Vinay Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat and Mohit Sharma for that slot.

Bad tempered end to England’s humiliation
Brisbane, November 24 David Warner, the Australia opening batsman who is no stranger to discord, made a hugely contentious intervention after his wonderful century on Saturday night when he derided England in general and Jonathan Trott in particular. He said: “It does look like they have scared eyes and the way Trotty got out was pretty poor and weak.” By late on the fourth afternoon yesterday, with Australia on the verge of a momentous victory by 381 runs, the umpires were forced to intervene in a spat between Michael Clarke, Australia’s captain, and Jimmy Anderson, England’s number 11 batsman. Clarke was picked up on a stump microphone suggesting that Anderson should be looking forward to a broken thumb (expletives deleted). George Bailey, the Test debutant and generally deemed to be one of life's nice guys, was also animatedly involved from short leg. Both captains were anxious to separate on field and off field outbursts after Australia took a 1-0 lead in the series to present them with a genuine opportunity of securing the Ashes after more than four years. But that cannot conceal the obvious ill-will between the players. Put simply, they cannot stand each other. Cook, conceding that England had been outplayed, said: “I think the comment last night by David Warner was pretty disrespectful to any professional cricketer really. On the pitch it’s pretty much a war anyway so there’s always going to be a few battles and a few words. That’s the way people want to watch the game being played, tough hard cricket, which on the pitch is fine.” Cook agreed that the niggle had been aggravated by the frequency of big matches between the sides. Familiarity has bred contempt. However, Clarke too was eager to allay thinly veiled suggestions that the players would soon be at each other’s throats. It was as if he and Anderson might as well have been making plans for dinner. “I don’t think it’s worth getting into what happens on the field,” he said. “There is always banter on the field and especially between Australia and England, two teams that have always played tough hard fought cricket on the field. “I still believe there is a very good mutual respect off the field, certainly from me and the Australia team we have the ultimate respect for them as a cricket team. I’ve heard a lot worse said on a field.”

Australia won the contest after a day punctuated by chatter and finger-pointing between the two sides in the middle. But it was Warner's comments in the press conference on Saturday, that Jonathan Trott's dismissal had been "weak", that attracted Cook's ire. "I think for any professional cricketer, really, yeah," he said when asked if the comment was disrespectful. "On the pitch it's pretty much a war, isn't it anyway? So there's always going to be a few words on the pitch. "I think that's the way people want to watch cricket being played. Tough, hard cricket. On the pitch is fine." Cook said he thought the testiness between the two teams was the result of playing back-to-back Ashes, a measure taken to take the Australia hosted series out of its place in the calendar next to the limited overs World Cup. "It's competitive

Mohali, November 24 Punjab used as many as nine bowlers in Gujarat's second innings, but none could pick up a wicket today as Gujarat ended up with 224/3 in 101.5 overs. Gohel remained unbeaten on 102 while Bhatt finished with an exact 100. Gohel's 102 came off 280 balls with 10 boundaries while Bhatt faced 284 balls and hit 16 fours. The two shared an unbeaten 210-run partnership after coming together yesterday at 14/3 in the 15th over. Beginning at 33/3, Gohel and Bhatt faced a tough task of saving the match. Gujarat were chasing 355 for victory but, realistically, that was never an option, especially as they had been bowled out for 127 in their first innings. Getting a draw for their team was the target for the two, and they stuck to their task with great tenacity. It was not exciting to watch as the two scored at less than 2.5 runs an over. But it was effective, exactly what Gujarat wanted from the two. Punjab earned three points from this fixture on the basis of their first innings lead. Gujarat pocketed one point. Brief scores Punjab 172 & 309 drew with Gujarat 127 and 224/3 (Gohel 102*, Bhatt 100*). Ishant fires as Delhi win Meanwhile in New Delhi, Ishant Sharma bowled an inspired spell in the post lunch session as Delhi beat Haryana side by 105 runs in fourth round. Chasing a target of 376, Haryana were all out for 270 in 70 overs. Ishant got 4/76 in second innings as his match haul was 9/109. However, credit should be given to Haryana for making a match out of it starting the day at 63/5 . Brief scores Delhi 201 and 312/7 decl. Haryana: 138 and 270 in 70 overs (Sachin 86*, Jayant 60, Ishant 4/ 76, Varun 4/49). |
Good experience for Indians, Australia win World Cup
Chandigarh, November 24 A total of three-over-par saw the Indian professional finish tied for 25th place and inspite of a creditable level-par, 71 in the final round by teammate Ganagjeet Bhullar, the Indian duo finished last in the team event. However, Lahiri carded the best finish amongst the Asian professionals in the field this week. “It’s been a very good week, a very positive week. It's my first time out here and it's a big learning curve on new conditions and very different to what we play on. To represent India for the first time as a professional was fantastic and I hope to play in more World Cups. This is what we work towards, to get into more World Cups and majors and I look forward to playing more events like this," said Lahiri. Bhullar had hopes of a better finish specially after carding a top-ten finish in the Australian Masters on the same course the previous week but had to be content with leaving a more experienced player. “Last week and this week, the ball striking has been absolutely the same. It was all down to the putting. This week was totally different,” said Bhullar, a four-time winner on the Asian Tour. “Last week, I played really solid and thought I would repeat it this week. I think it was a lot to do with the overconfidence from last week’s top-10. I sat down with my family over dinner last night and we were thinking about what went wrong. A lot of key factors which I thought would not disturb me, got to me but it's a good lesson. I will have to be more patient," added Gaganjeet. |
Pacquiao beats Rios by unanimous decision
Macau, November 24 Pacquiao was dominant throughout, showing vastly greater hand speed than his opponent and landing blistering combinations that left Rios’ right eye swollen and his left eye bleeding. Pacquiao was unable to score any knockdowns but he frustrated his foe, who on several occasions swung at nothing but air as the Filipino moved out of the way and returned fire before Rios could cover up. For Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs), the win was a welcome return to form after a controversial points loss to Timothy Bradley in June 2012 and a sixth-round knockout at the hands of Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in December had prompted retirement talks. More than his win, the fighter, also a congressman from Sarangani Province in the Philippines, wanted to shift focus on the hardships faced by his countrymen following Typhoon Haiyan, which slammed into the nation on November 8 and killed at least 4,000 people.

On fire Man City burn Tottenham
Manchester, November 24 Jesus Navas put City ahead after 15 seconds following a mistake by Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris before an own goal by Sandro and Sergio Aguero’s deft finish made it 3-0 before halftime at the Etihad Stadium. Tottenham, who had only conceded six league goals before Sunday, could not stem the flow after the break with Aguero and Alvaro Negredo both finishing clinically. Navas completed the rout in stoppage-time as City’s goal tally for the season rose to 34. City’s sixth win from six home league games put them on 22 points from 12 games, above Southampton on goal difference and six points behind leaders Arsenal. Meanwhile, Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw at Cardiff City later on Sunday. Sweet revenge for Lampard as Chelsea crush West Ham
London: Frank Lampard chose the perfect place to end his goalless run for Chelsea, in front of the West Ham fans who have never forgiven him for leaving the east London club more than a decade ago. Lampard scored the first and third goals of a comfortable 3-0 away win that put third-placed Chelsea’s title bid back on track after a recent stumble and left West Ham worrying about relegation. The goals were Lampard’s first after 10 League games without one.

Ronaldo injured as Bale scores in Madrid rout
MADRID, November 24 Atletico Madrid then played their part in a day of big wins for the teams at the top of the table when Raul Garcia and David Villa scored two goals apiece to help Atletico Madrid retain a strong hold on second spot with a 7-0 win over 10-man Getafe. Ronaldo struck after three minutes but the game was still in the balance when he limped off early in the second half. Karim Benzema settled Real’s nerves by curling home the second on 61 minutes before Gareth Bale, Isco and Alvaro Morata consigned Almeria to a resounding defeat. The main concern was the extent of the leg strain for Ronaldo, who has bagged 14 goals in seven games including four for Portugal.
— Reuters Goetze scores as Bayern sink Dortmund
Dortmund: Mario Goetze scored on his return to Borussia Dortmund, the club where he grew up, to set bitter rivals Bayern Munich on the way to a 3-0 Bundesliga win in the clash of Germany’s top two sides on Saturday. Goetze stabbed the ball home in the 66th minute to a resounding chorus of jeers, as the Bavarians enjoyed their first league win over Dortmund since February 2010. Arjen Robben sealed the win with a typical breakaway effort with five minutes left and Thomas Mueller sidefooted a third to complete a demoralising evening for Dortmund.
