Struggle on to reclaim 350 acres in Ambala village
Manish Sirhindi/TNS
Nurdh (Ambala), November 8 These land sharks even managed to get the land mutated into their names in 2003 with an intention to sell it to a Ambala property dealer after securing the backing of a top politician. However, the panchayat challenged the mutation in the Ambala DC’s court and has been fighting the case for the last 10 years to reclaim the land. A huge chunk of land in Nurdh attracted the local land sharks who managed to get 350 acres of this land mutated in name of those who were in possession of the land from the Barara SDM’s court in 2003. Out of the 440 acres, 90 acres of land stands in the name of the village panchayat and is leased out annually to generate income for the panchayat. While the 350 acres is Shamlat deh land and was being cultivated by villagers. Some local farmers, including Harcharan Singh, managed to get this 350 acres mutated in their name and allegedly tried to sell it to a Ambala property dealer, who had the backing of a known Congress leader, who happened to an MLA at that time. Believing that with the political clout enjoyed by the MLA, he would be able to take possession of the land and even suppress the opposition of the village panchayat, the deal was even finalised with the property dealer, but after the media gave it wide coverage, the MLA withdrew himself from the deal for the fear of bad publicity. However, he then introduced a native of Panipat, who is believed to be a relative of Congress leader Virender Singh, and attempts were made to sell this land to him, but this deal never materialised. Sarpanch of the village Ranbir Singh said following this, the village panchayat under then sarpanch Surinder Kaur, challenged the mutation of the 350 acres, in the Ambala DC court and the matter is still pending there. |
Summoning babus only way to get orders enforced: HC
Saurabh Malik Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, November 8 The assertion came on the petition against eve-teasing and other related issued filed by NGO Lawyers for Human Rights International. The petition was filed after six villages of Mahendragarh district in Haryana stopped sending girls to a higher secondary school in a nearby village after an eve-teasing incident. Taking up the matter, the High Court had put Punjab, Haryana and the Chandigarh Administration on notice. One of the issues raised in the petition was implementation of suggestions agreed upon by Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on combating eve-teasing through the Public Relations Department and the Education Department. Counsel for the petitioner Navkiran Singh had asserted that amendments such as making stalking an offence were carried out in the existing laws after the Delhi rape incident. But efforts to make arrangements for their implementation and generating awareness were lacking. As the case came up for resumed hearing, the Bench took exception to the fact that an affidavit in the matter was filed by Punjab police authorities despite wide compass and broad ramifications of the issue. “Punjab has filed an affidavit only through the police authorities. We find that there appears to be no endeavour to give finality to the aspect of the directions required to be given by this court?. We grant last opportunity to all three respondents to comply with the directions within four weeks failing which the Chief Secretaries of both states and the Adviser to the Administrator of the Chandigarh will remain personally present in the court,” the Bench concluded. In the petition, Navkiran Singh had earlier asserted : “The problem is the anti-women mindset of the villagers, who used this incident as an excuse to prevent girls from being educated. With growing assertion of girls in Haryana, the patriarchal system and customs are being challenged and this is an attempt to prevent their emancipation.” |
