Cong dishes out more unity advice to Punjab unit New Delhi, October 26 The meeting comes in the wake of Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa’s move to call a meeting of senior state MLAs on Saturday, ahead of Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar meeting with party legislators on October 28. Today’s luncheon meeting was chaired by Congress general secretary in charge
of Punjab Shakeel Ahmed. He had on October 14 hosted warring Punjab Congress leaders to a sumptuous lunch and told them to stay united. “The message of unity was conveyed to state leaders and they were told to complement one another. There should not be any heartburn. State leaders must remember – united they stand, divided they fall,” said Ahmad. The meeting was attended by 14 Congress leaders and MLAs while former CM Capt Amarinder Singh was conspicuous by his absence. The venue of both luncheon meetings was the same – India Islamic Cultural Centre in the capital. Officially, Ahmed maintained that he had asked PCC chief to shift the venue of the meeting to Delhi due to his inability to reach Chandigarh. Sources, however, said Ahmed heeded to concerns expressed by some
MLAs that never had a meeting of senior party MLAs been called by Pradesh Congress chief without seeking the consent of the CLP leader. The meeting discussed the ways to counter the aggressive Akali Dal-BJP combine during the Assembly session. Apart from targeting the Akalis for their leaders’ alleged involvement in land grab cases, the Congress also plans to raise issues like victimisation of Punjab farmers in Gujarat, regularisation of illegal colonies, electricity charges and property tax.
