Amritsar, October 25
Today the BSF organised a massive de-addiction programme at Government Senior Secondary School, Attari, in which people from all walks of life, including officials of various government departments, schools, NGOs and theatre groups, besides different panchayats participated. Gulzar Singh Ranike, Cabinet minister, and Ajay Tomar, IG, BSF, Punjab Frontier, were the chief guests on the occasion. The campaign was launched by the BSF in August this year from border village of Hardo Rattan with an aim to create a second line of defence by motivating people residing in the border villages to stand against the rampant drug abuse by joining hands with the security force. MF Farooqui, DIG, BSF, Amritsar sector, said a number of inhabitants of the border villages had approached them seeking help in getting their wards leave drugs. "The process has started and people are believing us and that is what is important," said the DIG. "Today, we have invited officials of Punjab National Bank, Animal Husbandry Department and dairy farming to educate people about the self-employment schemes, which could help them in choosing occupation of their interest," said Farooqui, while adding that this would help in generating employment opportunity for the rural youth and thus reducing drug addiction. Ajay Tomar, IG, assured all possible help from the security force to people in eradicating the drug abuse. Gulzar Singh Ranike said the government would also extend all help to the BSF in their cause against drug trafficking and drug abuse. |

People driving down the Majitha road also had to face great inconvenience due to the protest lodged by the contractual staff. The traffic remained suspended for around an hour which was later diverted from other link roads to avoid traffic congestion. It is pertinent to mention here that around 50 per cent of the nurses are working on contractual basis. They are paid Rs 7,500 per month while they had to work for the same hours for which the regular staff nurses work, said Raj Bedi Anand, president of the Nursing Association.
