Bathinda
100 quintals of poppy husk seized
: The police on Tuesday seized 100 quintals of poppy husk from a tractor-trailer in Mansa. The contraband, estimated to be around Rs 2 crore, was being smuggled in 252 bags and was hidden under bananas. Mansa SSP Narinder Bhargava said two persons, Darshan Singh of Mehraj and Rajpal Singh of Rampura in Bathinda, had been arrested. The duo had smuggled the contraband from Madhya Pradesh.

Fazilka, Pathankot dists get new SSPs:
The state government on Tuesday posted Ashok Bath as the new Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Fazilka while RK Kaushal would function in the same capacity in Pathankot, an official release said. Rahul Bhandari has been made the Secretary, Education (Schools) while Ajoy Sharma, Special Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, will hold the additional charge of Special Secretary (Cooperation). Shruti Singh has been given the charge of Special Secretary (Finance) and Director, Lotteries.

Hospital inspections to begin next week: Senior health officials would start inspecting all government hospitals in the state from next week. Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, issued related directions on Tuesday. She said among others, Health and Family Welfare Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani would also conduct surprise raids.

Bhog held for Makkar's son
: The bhog ceremony for Tejinderpal Singh, son of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief Avtar Singh Makkar, was held here on Tuesday. Among others, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh were present on the occasion. Badal described Tejinderpal as an "obedient son who shared his father's domestic burden as the latter set out to promote the panth". Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi also sent their condolence messages, which were read out at the bhog by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari.

Ban orders: Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Neeru Katyal has put a ban on the sale of eggs, meat and chicken on October 18 on the eve of Balmiki Jayanti.

GHG Khalsa clinch title: GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, won the Inter-College Cycling Championship at the velodrome track of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The team defeated Government College, Ludhiana and secured six gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals.

GGS College win title: GGS College for Women, Sector 26, blanked Panjab University Campus to win the final of the Inter-College Ball Badminton Championship for women today. GGS college team defeated PG campus 2-0. The team of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 46, was declared third.

Health Dept destroys 75 kg of khoya: The UT Health Department today raided four sweet shops in city and destroyed 75 kg of khoya as it was found exposed to dust and flies. Samples were also collected from four shops from Sector 32 and Daria.

Minister releases house journal
: Haryana Power Minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav on Tuesday released the new monthly house journal of the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, titled the “Haryana Bijli Vitran Samachar”. The bilingual in Hindi and English pictorial magazine, has three sections, News and Events, Tech Tonic and Discom Family. The magazine would have informative and educative matter pertaining, particularly to the power sector.

Medical officer held on bribe charge: A medical officer posted at a community health centre in Jind district was on Tuesday arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a person. Sleuths of the Vigilance Bureau caught Sanjeev Kumar Deswal red-handed while he was accepting the money for issuing a medico-legal report.

Boy killed
: Sunil (5) of Barna village was killed on the spot when he was hit by a car near the village on Monday evening. The police said car driver Rishi Pal, a resident of Thambar village in Ambala district, was arrested near Pipli Chowk, 5 km from here, today.

Four constables suspended
: Inspector General of Police Anil Rao has suspended four constables, Jasbir, Amit, Manoj and Rustam, for allegedly accepting bribe from drivers near Gaddi Khedi village in the district on Monday night. The accused were caught red-handed by a police team on patrolling. A spokesman for the department said any policeman involved in any misdeed would not be spared.

Guv’s greetings on Id-ul-Zuha: Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi has greeted the people of the state and the country on the occasion of Id-ul-Zuha. In his message, the Governor said the festival was symbolic of sacrifice and compassion and evoked love, brotherhood and harmony among people. Shivalik, Himalayan schools win: Shivalik International School and Himalayan Public School won their respective matches in the Inter-Council School Junior Boys' Basketball Tournament played at The Heritage School, here on Tuesday.In the first match, Shivalik International School defeated The Aryan School 8-2. Both teams scored their points in the first half. In the second match, Himalayan Public School beat St Jude's school 21-8. Doon Presidency School got a walkover as Doon Cambridge School did not turn up for the match.

T-20 tourney from Oct 17: The first RK Agarwal Memorial Inter-State School T-20 Cricket Tournament, organised by the Youth 20-20 Cricket Association will start on October 17. The week-long tournament will be held at The Doon Global School for which 12 school teams have confirmed their participation, said, Javed Butt, secretary of the association.

2 miscreants flee with ornaments: Two miscreants allegedly decamped with gold ornaments in Nehru Colony, here, today. Devendra Singh Negi resides in Nehru Colony and works at Welham School. Devendra’s wife works as Librarian at DAV (PG) College. Both were away at work and Devendra’s mother Kirti Devi was alone at home. The accused took ornaments from Kirti Devi on the pretext of polishing them and fled.
