Power woes hit Kupwara hard
Kupwara, October 6 “Even the metered areas are not spared and are subjected to frequent outages. The power department should do away with the metering system or improve the power supply,” said Kupwara resident Shabir Ahmad. The situation is
even worse in non-metered areas. Delegations from many villages including Ticker, Sogam, Darpora, Kalaroose and Andurgbugh, Drugmulla and Chowkibal falling in Kupwara tehsil said the villages were reeling under severe power crisis. “What is the point in having a curtailment schedule in place when power is not supplied in accordance with the schedule? We are made to pay power bills in time but are putting up with an erratic power scenario,” said Shamim Ahmad from Durgmulla. Students said they were the worst sufferers. “Our studies have been badly affected by the grim power scenario. During the nights, the power goes off for hours and in absence of power, we are forced to study under candle-lights,” said Class XII student Naseer Ahmad from Darzi Mohalla Kupwara. Consumers in Handwara town also complained of erratic power supply. They said outages have become the order of the day. “For one week, power has been playing hide-and-seek in the evening and night hours. We visited the power division Handwara with a plea to improve the power supply, but to no avail,” said Mohd Amin, a trader. Consumers of some Lolab villages complained of low voltage. “The voltage is so low that we are forced to lit candles to illuminate the room. Despite payment of the power tariff in time, the power department continues to test our patience,” said Zahoor Ahmad of Darpora Lolab. Many other consumers complained that the department serves them bills after months, making it difficult for them to make the payments, which turn out to be hefty. They demanded that bills should be served to them every month. A senior power official said, “The amount of power supplied to receiving stations is supplied to the consumers. We do not make any additional curtailment in power.” |

Ruling NC bids to woo city’s vote banks
Srinagar, October 6 Amira Kadal constituency of Srinagar in particular has seen some drastic changes in the development work over the past few months with the MLA concerned, Nasir Sogami, who is also a senior National Conference leader, personally visiting the various construction points and residential areas of his constituency in the city. For the past quite some time, the leading Opposition party People's Democratic Party (PDP) has been alleging that Srinagar city has been sidelined by the ruling NC-Congress coalition Congress state government, especially in terms of execution of various development projects. Residents of many areas in Amira Kadal constituency, especially uptown Srinagar, say development work including road repair, streetlight installation and water work have been initiated abruptly. "The NC is clearly in a mood to appease the people, especially in Srinagar, since the city has not seen a lot on the development front for the past four years. The development work in rural areas has been carried out comparatively swiftly. The city residents did not feel any change in the infrastructure ever since the NC-Congress government came to power," Munner Ahmad, a lecturer at Amar Singh College, Srinagar, said. People are clearly getting a feel of various political parties jumping into the election mode by focusing on development work as that remains the backbone of election manifestos of mainstream political parties based in the Valley. "NC spoke about providing employment, building roads and improving the quality of education during the election campaign last time. Srinagar residents however feel an ignored lot and hence the ruling party is trying to appease people," Imdad Hussain, a political analyst at Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora said. |
