DGSE Kumar Rahul assumes charge: IAS officer Kumar Rahul on Tuesday assumed charge as the Director General of School Education, an official statement said. Earlier posted as the Sangrur Deputy Commissioner, Kumar Rahul will be looking after mid day meals, Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha programmes in particular, the release said.

Lawyers strike work in Sangrur: Members of the District Bar Association and the advocates’ unions of Malerkotla, Moonak, Dhuri and Sunam observed strike on Tuesday to protest against the alleged manhandling of a fraternity member by policemen. Association president Gurtej Singh Grewal said the policemen “misbehaved” with a lawyer on the District Courts campus. He said they would intensify their agitation in case action was not taken against the policemen within two days.

Man booked on rape charge: Baljit Singh of Jaura village, 15 km from here, was booked for allegedly raping a 45-year-old widow of the same village on Tuesday. The woman alleged Baljit raped her in her house on August 15, 2013, and threatened to kill her children if she spoke about the crime to anyone.

Extortion case:The senior medical officer of Panjab University has alleged that he is being threatened and blackmailed for the past few months. In his complaint, Dr Devinder Dhawan, senior medical officer at the Health Centre, alleged that Raj Kumar Setia of Abohar was making threatening calls to him for the past few months.

Student killed in mishap: Dharamveer Chauhan (21) was killed in an accident while going to appear in his improvement paper at the SGRR College here yesterday. He was going on his scooter when some unidentified vehicle at Haridwar bypass road hit him. He was pursuing BSc from the SGRR College.
