DM warns violators of tobacco ban
Jammu, September 22 DM Ajeet Kumar Sahu has ordered that any shopkeeper caught selling banned gutkha or tobacco products to persons below the age of 18 years of age or selling tobacco products within 100 yards of
educational institutions, will be liable to fine as well as cancellation of registration of the shop. He further ordered that all heads of educational institutions ensure that sale of tobacco products is not allowed within 100 yards of their institutions. In case of any violations, the details of the shopkeepers shall be furnished to Chief Education Officer, Tehsildar and the SHO concerned for action. The government banned the sale and transportation of gutkha in the
state on March 6 after Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather announced so in the Legislative Assembly. The notification was issued by Commissioner, Food Safety, under
clause (a) of sub-section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, which
bans manufacture, storage, sale, transportation, display or distribution
of gutkha in the state. “Banned tobacco items are being sold at several places, which is a matter
of concern. We need to take strong measures against such practices and the shopkeepers involved. Directions have been passed in this regard”, the District Magistrate said. He said gutkha of any type contained tobacco or nicotine as a major
ingredient, so it was practical to impose a ban on its manufacturing, storage, sale, transportation
or distribution in the state. According to an NGO, Voluntary Health Association of India, a survey
conducted by Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), India, said about 26.6 per cent population
of the state was using tobacco in one or the other form. |

Despite claims, relief for Rajouri flood victims a far cry
Rajouri, September 22 “Nearly two dozen families of Painada and Manorgala villages of Kotranka tehsil in the border district of Rajouri are living out in the open, having lost their houses in the recent flood fury,” said a local villager Mohammed Iqlaq of Painada. “It’s been raining heavily here over a couple of days and villagers have nothing in the name of housing or shelter. They have been using cement bags to build tents for children so that they can protect them from persistent rain,” he added. An emotional Iqlaq said, “We have lost everything in the recent flood fury in which over 30 houses of my village Painada were partially damaged and eight were damaged. This has forced families to live openly without any shelter.” “We cannot take shelter in partially damaged houses - Recently, two children were buried alive when a partially damaged building collapsed,” another villager said. “We have no source of income or any other means to earn livelihood or to build houses again as we are completely dependent on government compensation,” he added. Showing their anger against local Member of Legislative Assembly Zulfiar Choudhary, villagers wondered what could be expected from this government when their own elected representative has not taken stock of the situation here over the past five years. Tehsildar Kotranka Israr Ahmed said, “We have no tents available to us;
we have provision to provide tents to those who lost their house in the flood or any other natural calamity for a period of three months and we
have made provisions for some of them, but we are falling short.” He said, “We have reports of about 60 houses in Kotranka being damaged completely and
we are preparing their compensation files; hopefully, they will get compensation soon.” Meanwhile, according
to the district administration's data, there are over 1,500 houses damaged in the recent flood fury which left many homeless, but the sluggish approach of the government in compensating the victims is a serious cause of concern. |

Natrang’s play throws light on matrimony, the horoscope way
Jammu, September 22 He refuses a marriage proposal for their son with a very good girl because their horoscopes do not match as per his astrologer. The son was educated and modern, and also liked that girl; he refused to abide by his father's volition. He tried to make him understand that it was not just horoscopes which guaranteed the most compatible marriage, it all also depends on the couple as far as making their marriage successful is concerned. He even cited different examples before him where there was no harmony in the couple even after their horoscopes were properly matched; in fact, somewhat same was the case with his father. But when all this was of no use, the son decided to carve out his own path; he approached the astrologer and bribed him to make his marriage possible. Actors who presented this performance included Ashwani Bali, Subha Rajput, Uplaksh Singh Kotwal, Susheel Raina, Sakshi Parkash and Pankaj Verma. Lights were operated by Neeraj Kant and music was rendered by Mahikshit Singh Sambyal. Sets were erected by Mohd Yaseen and Rahul Singh. Rana flays Gen VK
Singh for ‘lowering the dignity of his office’
Jammu, September 22 “How can a person of the stature of Chief of the Army Staff don upon himself a role carved out for the people in a democratic country”, Rana said, He was addressing a National Conference convention
at Nandian and Darhal block headquarters while winding up his four-day tour of the border district of
Rajouri. He said his party stood vindicated after the revelation of General Singh’s role in overthrowing the democratically-elected government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in 2010, as his tenure in Kashmir had remained biased against NC. “Ever since the positioning of General Singh as
GoC, Victor Force, in Kashmir, he had developed close links with south Kashmir-based political elements and sustained this special relationship in his elevated capacities”, he
said. Rana regretted that despite holding the coveted positions and donning the mantle of the Army Chief, General Singh furthered the interests and played the card of the particular party much to the chagrin of his senior officers posted in Jammu and Kashmir. “He went out of the way to overthrow the Omar Abdullah government by using all resources at his command, much against the high traditions of the Indian Army”, he added. |
