Sensex rides on US stimulus, gallops to three-year high 
New Delhi, September 19
The BSE Sensex rallied strongly by 684 points to an almost three-year high cheering the US Federal Reserve move to unexpectedly continue with its money printing programme which will give some breathing space to struggling emerging economies like India.

Sarpanch’s death: SC rejects Haryana MLA’s bail plea
New Delhi/Chandigarh, September 19
The Supreme Court today rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Haryana’s former Transport Minister Om Prakash Jain and directed him to surrender before the CBI court by September 23 in a case involving the death of a sarpanch.

Punjab looks to raise Rs 800 cr, but it’s not enough even for staff arrears
Chandigarh, September 19
While Punjab expects to net Rs 800 crore in the next three months through tax collections, the amount is likely to go towards meeting the liability of arrears amounting to Rs 1,000 crore under the Fifth Pay Commission.

Ministry of Defence to engage a global salvaging company
New Delhi, September 19
The Ministry of Defence is planning to hire a global professional salvaging company to extract the sunken Indian submarine INS Sindhurakshak. The submarine had capsized following a blast and fire on board on August 14 while it was docked at the Mumbai naval dockyard.

Govt: Not diluting N-liability law
New Delhi, September 19
Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the US, the government today asserted that there was no question of violating the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act 2010 after it came under heavy Opposition fire over reports that a key provision of the law could be diluted to facilitate commercial contracts with potential American nuclear suppliers.

Assad: Will take a year to destroy chemical weapons
Damascus, September 19
President Bashar al-Assad has said it will take at least a year and $1 billion for Syria to surrender its chemical weapons, as Al-Qaida-linked fighters today tightened their grip on a border town. (Details on World page)

Pak training 50 terrorists in jungle near Poonch
Jammu/Poonch, September 19
Pakistan, it appears, has set up a specialised training camp for nearly 50 hardcore terrorists in a dense jungle at Kacharban in Pakistan-occupied- Kashmir (PoK). The camp - situated in Bagh district, which is close to Saujiyan sub-sector in Poonch district - is heavily fortified and has been declared out of bounds for PoK civilians, including shepherds, who used to graze their livestock in the area, reveal Indian intelligence agencies.
