2 more held for Mumbai gang rape

Mumbai, August 24
The Mumbai Police on Saturday arrested two more accused in connection with the gang rape of a 23-year-old photojournalist, as the hunt for the other two absconding accused continued for the second day today amid a massive public outrage.

Vijay Jadhav was arrested in the wee hours from Madanpura area by the elite Crime Branch personnel, who too have been engaged in the search for the culprits. Later in the evening, the third accused, identified as Siraj Rehman, about 25-years-old, was nabbed from Mumbra area, police sources said.

"The probe is heading in the right direction and we hope to arrest all other absconding accused soon," city Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said. He said investigators had gathered "all evidence against the accused and we will file a comprehensive chargesheet soon”. Police sources said half a dozen teams had gone out of Mumbai to Thane and Raigad district to trace the absconding two accused in the case.

Jadhav and Chand Babu Sattar Shaikh alias Mohammed Abdul, who was arrested yesterday, were produced before the Bhoiwada holiday court at Dadar which remanded them in police custody till August 30. Rehman is likely to be produced before a magistrate tomorrow.

There were protests outside the court premises by Shiv Sainiks and BJP activists who shouted slogans against the accused. Meanwhile, the hospital where the survivor is being treated said her condition was improving. PTI

Accused’s grandmother claims he is a minor

The family of Chand (pic), the first to be arrested in the case, claimed he was a minor. Sarnabai, his grandmother, has produced a certificate before the police which shows his date of birth as February 26, 1997. The police, however, said Chand was 19 and claimed he had tampered with the document. The police are planning to subject him to bone ossification test to determine his age.
