Mahila Cong leader joins Akali Dal: A former president of the District Mahila Congress (Baghapurana), Bibi Jasbir Kaur Samalsar along with her supporters joined the Akali Dal in the presence of SAD president Sukhbir Badal on Tuesday. She alleged the state Congress had lost its connect with the grass-roots level as only drawing room politicians were calling the shots. Fazilka man drowns in Sutlej: Shambhu Singh (54) of Gaganke village reportedly drowned in the overflowing Sutlej on Tuesday. Sources said Shambhu had gone to meet his sister in Retewali Bhaini village across the Sutlej. On his way back, when he halted at Kanwawali Pattan bridge to observe the river water, he allegedly slipped into it. The BSF has pressed its boats and divers into service to trace the victim.

Activists burn effigies: The activists of Dehati Mazdoor Sabha (DMS) led by District General Secretary Paramjit Randhawa held a demonstration and burnt the effigies of the state government in protest against the 'anti-people' policies of the government. Protesters also submitted a detailed memorandum to the Phillaur Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Jasbir Singh.
Students escape unhurt:
As many as 40 students of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh Police Public School, Phillaur, had a narrow escape when the school bus carrying them rammed into the paddy fields near Apra village on Monday. No casualties were reported. The bus driver had reportedly lost control over the vehicle causing the mishap, said the police.
Congressmen stage dharna:
Scores of Congressmen led by Block Congress Committee (Noormahal) president Baljit Singh Johal held a demonstration and staged a dharna in front of the Noormahal police station in Phillaur sub-division in protest against the alleged biased attitude of the police towards the Congressmen. Former MLA Amarjit Singh Samra alleged that police falsely implicate the congressmen in false and manipulated cases.
Sarpanch drowned:
Sarpanch of Indira Colony, Phillaur, was drowned in Sutlej River near Phillaur on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Bela Ram. The sarpanch had reportedly gone to immerse coconut and other material in the river, as an astrological remedy advised by an astrologer, but slipped in the course of doing so.The divers located the body
of the deceased after a 3-hour-long search operation. The post-mortem was conducted at Phillaur Civil Hospital.
