Rain throws life out of gear
Ludhiana, August 6
Heavy rain lashed the city for more than six hours today, throwing life out of gear in the mega city with most of the roads, including those in several posh localities, under knee-deep water. In many parts, the rainwater choked the sewer network and residents complained of sewer discharge flowing into their houses and commercial establishments.

With the city today witnessing the second heavy rainfall of this month so far, the city has received 107 mm of rainfall in the first week of August. The city receives an average rainfall of 180 mm in August. The city today recorded 59 mm of rainfall from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm. Earlier, the city and the adjoining areas had received 47 mm of rainfall on Saturday.

School Games: Rain plays spoilsport on Day 2
Ludhiana, August 6
Rain played spoilsport on the second day of the district School Games. Sports officials decided to postpone the matches of all outdoor games due to the rain.

Labour shortage forces knitwear industry to outsource work
Ludhiana, August 6
The textile and knitwear industry in the city is flooded with orders for the coming winter season, but a shortage of labour is playing spoilsport for it. Left with no other option, the industry has started outsourcing work to deliver the consignments on time.

GLADA nets Rs 37.52 crore
Ludhiana, August 6
A day after the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) sold 14 residential plots in Dhandari Kalan for Rs 9.90 crore, it raked in another Rs 37.52 crore from the sale of 22 commercial sites/properties in Dugri, Phase I and II, and Sector 32-A on Chandigarh Road in a public auction conducted here today. The properties sold today yielded a premium of nearly 40 per cent over the total reserve price of Rs 27.37 crore.

‘Check use of pressure horns by students’

The use of pressure horns is not limited to buses and trucks. School students are increasingly using pressure horns on their mobikes, which is contributing to the noise pollution.

Water samples of 272 schools fail purity test
Ludhiana, August 6
Water samples of 272 government schools and government-aided schools in the district have failed the purity test. The Assistant Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, Dr Kaushal Saini, said, "We have received the report of water samples collected from 969 schools in the district, of which 272 have failed the purity test, while 697 samples were found fit for human consumption."

Raid on food court at mall
Ludhiana, August 6
The Excise and Taxation Department today raided a food court, "Destination Food", located at Silver Arc Mall for not paying tax. The food court has not even got itself registered with the department.

Businessmen briefed about opportunities in Hong Kong

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) jointly organised a session on “fast track to expand business with China and international markets via Hong Kong” in Ludhiana. Extension lecture
Ludhiana: NSS Unit of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, organised an extension lecture on “Skin Rejuvenation” with special emphasis on facial skin. Dr Aman Dua, Consultant Dermatologist and Hair Transplant Surgeon, was the resource person. Dr Aman Dua interacted with the NSS volunteers and enlightened them regarding daily skincare and how to reinvigorate it. Principal Dr Charanjit Mahal extended welcome to Dr Aman Dua and expressed her gratitude towards the speaker. She motivated the students to interact with the resource person and to attain maximum information.

Tips for horticultural operations imparted
Ludhiana: Providing useful tips for the horticultural operations in August, the farm experts of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have advised the farmers of the Punjab that the weather in this month is the most suitable for the establishment and growth of evergreen fruit plants like citrus, mango, guava, aonla, litchi, loquat, and sapota. The experts suggested that the short statured leguminous crops such as moong, mash, guara and beans may be intercropped on vacant land in the young orchards.

Teej celebrated
Ludhiana: “Teej” was celebrated by the students of the kindergarten wing of Green Land Senior Secondary Public School, Jalandhar bypass. The school campus wore the look of a typical Punjabi village and was beautifully decorated with phulkaris and flowers. The students had a wonderful time taking swings and relishing malpuas and kheer. Chairman-cum-director of the school Rajesh Rudhra and principal Baldeep Pandher joined the students. They impressed upon the fact that such celebrations play a vital role in binding the students to their culture as the present generation is drifting away from their age old traditions under the impact of westernisation.

Dengue cases reported
Two cases of dengue have been reported from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. These included two male patients from Gurdaspur and Hanuman Garh, Rajasthan, respectively.

The Punjab Athletics Association (PAA) released the names of players who would represent the state in the forthcoming 25th National Athletics Championship scheduled to be held at Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh from August 31 to September 2.
