Woman shoots herself dead at home
Jalandhar, August 3 The deceased Harvinder Kaur (40) had reportedly gone missing since 5 pm yesterday. Her husband, Paramvir Singh, working as a chief ticket inspector with the Railways, had got her missing report lodged at the Basti Bawa Khel Police, after which he himself managed to locate her from Dakoha village this morning. Harvinder had reportedly been under depression due to an alleged extra-marital affair of her husband owing to which she committed the act after she was brought back to her place. She fired herself with a licensed .32 bore pistol of her husband which went across her temple area. She was reportedly sitting on a sofa of her room, and her 19-year-old son saw her shoot herself but could not act timely. The couple has another 15-year-old son. The family had allegedly removed all signs of stains in the room, thrown off the blood-smeared cushions of the sofa, washed off blood from the body, changed the woman's clothes and were about to take it for cremation when the police got information about the incident. While the deceased's parents are no more, her maternal uncle Kulwant Singh gave a statement that his niece had committed suicide, as she was upset at the alleged relation of her husband with some widow. It is on his version that the police has booked Paramvir Singh under Section 306 of the IPC. Section 201 of the IPC, too, has been imposed. The police said all evidences had been found at the rear side of the house. The accused's family, on the other hand, alleged that the woman was involved in an extra-marital relationship, which came to the knowledge of her husband, leading her to commit suicide. |
Hooliganism disturbs academics, admn mum
Jalandhar, August 3 On June 11 this year, a group of miscreants, armed with sharp-edged weapons, attack a student while he is appearing for an exam at the local Mehr Chand Polytechnic Institute in Jalandhar. The institute authorities raise an alarm. A case is registered and six miscreants are booked, out of which two are nabbed. One of these two was recently freed reportedly after a compromise was reached. "Shady" activities in the area still continue according to the institute authorities. Two years ago, a mathematics teacher of Government Senior Secondary School, Khiwa, was attacked by a group of men with covered faces, armed with hockey sticks and sharp-edged weapons. The teacher suffered an injury, but till date, an FIR has not been registered. The said school has a history of thefts and rampant addiction in the area. The threat of an attack still looms large among teachers. Since the attack, all teachers of the school have pooled in to hire a taxi to ferry them to and from school because they are scared to travel alone (spending thousands from their own pockets). The school had also had three thefts in the past one year, the FIRs for these, as well, haven't been lodged. Staff says, "Etthe FIR nai lodge karde (they do not lodge FIRs here)." A few days ago, they wrote to the SSP rural regarding the issue. While the hideous web of addiction and police inaction is rendering an entire breed of students violent and hopeless, the silence of the authorities only suggests an intention to let the anarchy continue. Even as "thinking" academicians whine over the total lack of respect for
teachers among students of this generation and youths turning useless through a life of addiction, the education, health departments or the district authorities have never even attempted to carry out checks at schools or colleges. Meanwhile, SSP (Rural) Yurinder Singh Hayer reacting to the Khiwa school situation said, "I am not aware of the said complaints because we receive many. But if some institution is suffering from problems, we will look into the case and initiate action against whoever is responsible." Meanwhile, teachers of Doaba College today held a special meeting condemning the attack on teacher Bharat Bhushan. The college has announced an aid of Rs 1 lakh for him. Principal Doaba College, Naresh Dhiman, said, "Teachers of the college condemned the attack at a meeting held today. While we are not yet sure whether it was an attack by students, the incident is very unfortunate." Expressing concern at the recent rise in incidents of campus violence, Dhiman said, "There were times where teachers were respected, but rising fee patterns have caused students to perceive education as a give-and-take system rather than to treat the campus as a 'temple
of learning' as it previously was. Addiction certainly has added to the deteriorating campus atmosphere." Call for action
Doaba College, Mehr Chand Polytechnic, Government Senior Secondary Schools, Khiwa, are some recent examples of violence, but experts say if the administration doesn't look for quick solutions to handle the rising addiction and campus-related violence, Punjab might be looking at a dark future Academician speak
Tejinder Virli, state secretary, PCCTU, said, "The attack on the teacher of Doaba College is highly condemnable and yet again, highlights the rot which has set in the system. Such incidents are clearly on the rise and it is shameful to see that students have forgotten respect for teachers. Lack of cognisance or action by the authorities, district or state, has caused students to grope in the abyss of addiction and violence. Increasing commercialisation in education is also to blame. If something is not done soon, the state might be looking at a stark future steeped in total
chaos." |
Delay in flat possession
Jalandhar, August 3 She had lodged a complaint against Nitishree Infrastructure Ltd through its authorised signatory Govind Tandon saying that she had purchased flat number B1/304 on the third floor of Shourya Green scheme for a basic price of Rs 20.8 lakh, which after adding other charges came to a total of Rs 22,02,750. She said she and her husband had signed an agreement for the flat, with a built-up area of 1,955 sq feet, on March 14, 2008. As per clause 9 of the agreement, the construction was to be completed in a year with the possession to be given by March 2009, with a grace period of three months. The same clause had a provision that in the event of the construction not getting completed and the possession not given in time, the builder would pay up liquidated damages at the rate of Rs 5 per sq feet per month to the complainant and her husband. The complainant said she had approached the builders many times for the possession of the flat and also to pay the liquidated damages of Rs 3,61,675 for 37 months, but they were putting off the complainant on one excuse or the other. She said she had also filed a legal notice, but the opposite party did not care about it and failed to give the possession. The counsel for the builder said the complainant had failed to pay the amount in time. "Till today, the complainant has made part payment only", he said. The forum found that the company was to give the possession of the flat by June, 2009. It observed that the builder had already been paid up the basic price of the flat while only an amount of Rs 1,22,750 was still pending. It found that Nitishree Infrastructure did not produce any copy of the possession letter which it had handed over to the allottees except for a letter, dated September 10, 2012 which was sent by them during the pendency of the complaint. It considered the company to be liable to pay liquidated damages as agreed between the parties at the rate of Rs 5 per square feet per month to the allottees. It calculated the per month damages at Rs 9,775. It said, "The complaint is accepted and Nitishree is directed to pay Rs 9775/- per month to the allottees from July 2009 till they give the possession of the flat to them. Remaining payment of Rs1,22,750 to be adjusted towards the amount of liquidated damages. |

Flaying the Akali-BJP government, Walia said, "What to talk of various development projects, this government fails to provide even smooth roads, clean environment, proper drainage system and uninterrupted power supply."
