Nothing new in Delhi CBI probe
Chandigarh, July 20
Samwartak Singh, ex-DPI (Schools), who has been given a clean chit by the Delhi CBI Investigation for over a year by the Delhi Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the teachers’ recruitment scam, that rocked the UT Education Department in 2009, has failed to nail any of the senior officials in a criminal case with the investigating agency giving a clean chit to former DPI (Schools).

Setback to traders
Chandigarh, July 20
In a major setback to city traders and industrialists, who were demanding enhancement of the covered area and the floor area ratio (FAR) in city markets and in the Industrial Area, the UT master plan committee has recommended that a further enhancement in FAR in the city should not be allowed.

Joint action committee formed
Chandigarh, July 20 In a meeting at DAV College here, the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU) and the Chandigarh Government College Teachers’ Association (CGCTA) joined hands to form a joint action committee to pursue their long-pending demands.

2 youths get 7-year jail for acid attack
Chandigarh, July 20
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Preeti Sahni today sentenced two youths to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment in an acid attack case. The court sentenced Amandeep Singh and Sham Singh to undergo seven years in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 7 lakh each on them. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the two convicts.

Movie buffs to make a beeline for Panchkula
Panchkula, July 20
Residents queue up at a movie ticket counter in Shalimar Hall, Panchkula Moviegoers, who got disheartened after the prices of tickets were increased yesterday, have something to cheer about. To watch a movie in the town, a family of four will have to shell out just Rs 800 (beverages included) while in Chandigarh the same number of people will have to pay Rs 1,800.

‘35% deaths in India due to cardiovascular diseases’

Special Judge Fast Track Court, Ambala, Vimlesh Tanwar, has awarded eight-year sentence to a resident of Karnal here today. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 4,000 on him.

Five booked on rape charge
Ambala, July 20
The Naraingarh police today registered a rape case against five youths on the complaint of a girl. The victim is a Class XII student. In a complaint filed with the police, the victim said on July 17, the youths took her to Solan and one of them raped her there. Her parents reported the matter to the police.

CBI has no permission to probe Solan land deal: Defence counsel
Chandigarh, July 20
Justice Nirmal Yadav Continuing with its arguments on the framing of charges in the judge bribery case, involving Justice Nirmal Yadav (retd) as the accused, the defence counsel today told the court that hotelier Ravinder Singh's name featuring in the registry of the Solan land deal was not some other Ravinder Singh or ‘dummy purchaser’ as claimed by the prosecution.

Rs 125 crore fraud
Accused's police remand extended
Chandigarh, July 20
A local court today extended police custody of accused Sukhbir Shergill, who is allegedly involved in a Rs 125 crore fraud, by four days. Sukhbir's wife and another accused in the case, Gurbir Shergill, has been sent to 14 days' judicial custody.

5 murder accused acquitted
Mohali, July 20
The Mohali police's claims of cracking a blind murder case of an Uttarakhand native, Kulbhushan aka, Tinu Rai (32), fell flat after the local court acquitted all the five accused, including a woman, for lack of evidence in the case.

Wrestler Sushil Kumar with young kick boxers during a function in Chandigarh on Saturday The Punjab Kick Boxing Association felicitated state’s kick boxers, who excelled at various national level competitions, today. The award ceremony was presided over by Sushil Kumar, wrestler and silver medallist of 2012 London Olympics. As many as 104 kick boxers and coaches of the state were honoured.
