Early monsoon catches JMC off guard
Jammu, June 18 Two days ago when the rains lashed Jammu, several localities were flooded with sewerage water as the clogged drains was not able to stream rainwater. Even the Ranbir Canal and its distributaries are clogged with polythene and other solid waste. Though callous residents are also to blame for the problem, but lack of seriousness on part of the authorities has contributed to it. Officials said though instructions have been issued that nullahs will be cleaned regularly and action would be taken against those caught dumping garbage in them, but the directives are not being followed. In several parts of the city, rainwater has led to blockage of drains and nullahs. The dirty water entered shops and houses, causing extensive damage. People had to pump out rainwater from their houses and shops. The worst-hit areas during the rainfall include Digiana, Talab Tillo, Canal road, Sidhra, Gujjar Nagar, Gumat and Subash Nagar. "It has become a perennial problem in the area. Polluted water and filth from drains and nullahs filled our houses merely half-an-hour after the downpour," said Avinash Choudhary, a resident of Talab Tillo. "Fearing flooding of localities close to major nullahs in the city during rains, the JMC has gathered its men and machinery to start removing debris from Rajiv Nagar, Gangyal, Digiana, Trikuta Nagar, Bhour Camp nallahs but it could be too late," claimed a JMC employee.

Load carriers sans indicators turn into safety hazard on wheels
Jammu, June 18 These vehicles make turns anywhere without giving prior signals, which is posing threat to other vehicles plying on the road. The traffic authorities don’t check these vehicles and the common man is suffering. These vehicles include tippers, trolleys, tractors and other such vehicles plying without following traffic rules and regulations and hardly care for other people plying on the highway. These vehicles sometime cause accidents as the speed of vehicles plying on the highway always remain above 50 per kilometre. Even, the registration number plates on these load carriers are not visible and at the time of any accident, the police faces difficulties to track such vehicles. Despite the fact that the traffic police is present on the highway, but they remain busy in search of passenger vehicles who violate traffic rules so that they can be challaned. But they don’t care how these load carriers move on the highway. “The traffic police only catches those vehicles, which come from other districts and are not regularly seen on the highway. The load carriers plying on the highway have their monopoly and the traffic police are hand-in-glove with them,” said a tempo driver. “The problem with these vehicles is they do not go to the regional transport office to get their vehicles passed as everything has to be in order. I will consult the RTO, Jammu, and will launch a drive to check such vehicles in coming days,” said Manmohan Singh, SSP (Traffic), Jammu. |

Delay in starting train service to Katra hampers rly station makeover
Jammu, June 18 Train to Katra has been delayed by more than a year and the authorities are still not sure whether the July, 2013 deadline for the project can be met. Expansion of the Jammu railway station from three platforms to five has been rejected by the higher authorities, for which a proposal was sanctioned two years ago and funds were also released by the Union Railway Ministry. The only reason for rejecting the proposal was “when the train will go to Katra, three platforms will be sufficient for the Jammu Tawi railway station," said RN Meena, Divisional Traffic Manager (DTM), Jammu. He asaid the deadline may be extended as “the work on the a tunnel at Udhampur may take some more time,” he said. Meena admitted that the Jammu Tawi railway station does not have any off season as the trains from Jammu are always full of passengers. But the railways cannot increase the number of trains in Jammu as it has only three washing lines, and to increase the number of trains needs more washing lines. The railways are waiting for the Katra station to be functional as it has two washing lines. "It takes more than six hours to check the train which needs to be parked in the washing line, if we increase the number of trains, we will have to increase the washing lines as well,” he said. “We have two washing lines at the Katra railway station, so it will be easy for us to maintain the extra number of trains when the Katra station starts funtioning,” he added. |

The Pandits also expressed grave concern over the “failure of the government” in making proper arrangements for devotees and pilgrims of Kheer Bhawani. They have said due to lack of proper arrangements, devotees had to face a lot of difficulties. The committee said it had made an appeal to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to direct the government to ensure proper power supply in the area. “We are suffering because of the government’s attitude. We hope that the Central Government will take effective steps,” the committee said. On March 22, the state government had announced that regular electricity supply will be allotted to Jagati, Muthi and Purkhoo apartments constructed under the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Plan (PMRP) for displaced Pandits.
