CBSE XII result: Girls ahead, pass percentage up

Girls outperformed boys in the CBSE class XII examinations, results of which were declared today. The pass percentage of girls (87.98) remained higher than that of boys (77.78) at the national level.

The board results assume significance for candidates eying IIT seats given the increased weightage allotted to class XII scores in line with the new formula applicable for admission to the country’s premier institutes from this academic year.

The overall pass figure improved by two points i.e. 82.10 per cent compared to 80.19 per cent last year.

Delhi boy Paras Sharma, a student of Lancer Convent School, and Sopan Khosla of DPS, Jabalpur, remained top scorers with 99 per cent marks in commerce and science streams, respectively. Ritish Goyal of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, secured 98.6 per cent marks in non-medical. Similarly, Mannat Tipnis of Lawrence School, Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh, stood first in humanities by scoring 98.5 per cent marks, while Pratyesh Kumar Singh from Arunachal Pradesh’s Tenga Valley secured 98 per cent marks.

Girls again dominated the show in the Panchkula region, comprising Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

As many as 4,330 girls secured above 90 per cent marks, with 664 scoring more than 95 per cent in the region. In comparison, 3,480 boys secured above 90 per cent marks, with 430 surpassing 95 per cent marks. Compared to 80,622 boys, 59,345 girls had appeared in these examinations in the region.

Girls were way ahead of boys in gender-wise overall pass percentage as well. Against 78.3 per cent boys, 88.1 per cent girls cleared the examinations.

The Panchkula region recorded overall pass percentage of 82.48 per cent, better than the national figure of 82.10 per cent.

The region fared better in terms of overall results compared to last year. The overall pass percentage improved by 3.56 per cent this year. The number of students placed under compartment also went down from 15,844 students in 2012 to 14,667 students this year.

Regional Officer RJ Khanderao said the Panchkula region performed better than most other regions across India.

At least 1,495 schools, including independent, private, government and Kendriya Vidyalaya, took part in the examinations in the Panchkula region and their overall results also showed improvement over last year.

The overall pass percentage of government schools went up from 79.86 per cent in 2012 to 85.32 per cent in 2013. The pass percentage of private schools also went up from 79.17 per cent to 82.80 per cent this year. Further, the pass percentage of Kendriya Vidyalaya improved from 92.24 per cent to 93.62 per cent.

Among the eight regions, Chennai retained the top slot posting pass percentage of 91.83 followed by Delhi at 86.78. The Ajmer region came third with pass percentage of 86.26, while Allahabad remained at the bottom registering pass percentage of 71.82.

At the national level, a total of 9,44,721 students took the examinations, an increase of 15.81 per cent over last year.

Jawahar Navoday Vidyalayas stood at the top among various categories of schools at the national level by securing an overall pass percentage of 96.14, followed by Kendriya Vidyalayas at 94.81.

Government-aided schools posted a success rate of 85.17 per cent followed by government schools at 84.89 per cent. Private schools remained at the bottom with 44.12 pass percentage.
