Mumbai Crime Branch summons CSK honcho
Shiv Kumar/TNS

Mumbai, May 23
Gurunath Meiyappan, CEO of Chennai Super Kings, has been asked to appear tomorrow in Mumbai before the Crime Branch in connection with the IPL betting scandal.

A Mumbai police team today visited Chennai to quiz Meiyappan. Police officials said the team which visited Meiyappan's residence at Chennai was told by security officials that he was not at home. The police then left behind a copy of the summons which asked Meiyappan to present himself before the Mumbai police on Friday, officials said.

"He was asked to personally appear before the officers at the Crime Branch between between 11 am and 5 pm tomorrow," a police official said here. The name of Meiyappan has surfaced in connection with the investigations into the spot-fixing scandal of the ongoing IPL tournament after it was found that he was regularly in contact with actor Vindoo, who has been linked to bookies.

Mystery shrouded the whereabouts of Meiyappan as some reports said he had left for Kolkata, while some said he had stayed back in Delhi after witnessing the first play-off between CSK and Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.

According to the police, the call records of Vindoo indicated he had made several calls to Meiyappan.

The police wants to hear the Meiyappan's side of the story. They would also enquire about CSK honcho’s telephonic conversations with Vindoo.

"Vindoo made several calls to Meiyappan. We may call the person in question to ascertain the reasons why these frequent calls were made," an officer involved in the probe said. The actor was also allegedly invited by Meiyappan into the VIP box at the Chennai stadium where he was photographed together with Sakshi, wife of captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Officials also refused to say whether they wanted to question Sakshi Dhoni in the matter. The Mumbai police, meanwhile, said they were looking to question a few players on the suspicion that they were linked to bookies.

It is not clear so far whether these players are from the Rajasthan Royals’ team or others teams.
