20-year-old youth stabbed to death

The blood-soaked body of a 20-year-old youth was found from a vacant flat in the CRP Colony here today. The city police claims to have cracked the case with the arrest of one person. A hunt is on to nab two other accused in the case.
SAD reigns supreme in ZP poll

Irate parents, residents assault school staff, block National Highway No. 1
Ludhiana, May 22
The rattled parents of a four-year-old girl, on whom there was a rape bid in her school yesterday, and residents of the area today assaulted the school staff and blocked the National Highway No. I near Jodhewal Basti in protest against the incident.

Consumers flay advance deposit

There is widespread resentment among people in the mega city as Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has raised a demand for advance consumption deposit (ACD) from domestic, commercial and industrial consumers of electricity. Depending upon the average consumption of power by the consumers for one and a half months, the amount of the ACD could vary between Rs 2,000 and several lakhs of rupees in the case of power-intensive industrial units.
35-yr-old man beaten to death by neighbour

A 35-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his neighbour on the Tibba road here today after the duo entered into an argument over a trivial issue.

100 jhuggis razed near cinema

Amid heavy resistance from jhuggi dwellers, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation officials cleared around 100 jhuggis near Orient Cinema in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar here this evening. More than 200 jhuggis had come up on government land worth crores in one of the poshest areas of the city.

The Shiromani Akali Dal has won all the five seats (two each in Khanna and Samrala and one in
Machhiwara) of Zila Parishad that fall in the police district of Khanna. In the block samiti elections in
Khanna, the SAD has won 12 seats while the Congress has been declared winner on five seats. One seat has gone to an independent candidate.

Drivers’ agitation leaves passengers in the lurch

For the second consecutive day today, the city residents were at the receiving end of the strike by the drivers of 30 low-floor buses plying under Ludhiana City Bus Service Ltd (LCBSL). This is the second such strike in less than a month. Four new routes (started in April), Chandigarh Road, Hambran Road, Delhi Road and Dugri Road, have been non-operational since yesterday.
174 water samples fail purity test

The water samples of 174 government and government- aided schools failed purity test conducted by the District Health Department in last three weeks. Assistant Civil Surgeon,
Ludhiana, Dr Kaushal Saini, said: “There are 1,533 government and government-aided schools in the district. We have started checking purity of drinking water at these schools. Till date, we have collected water samples of 661 schools. Out of these 174 samples failed purity test. The reports of samples of the remaining 872 tests will be compiled by May 31.”
Power generator set catches fire

A power generator set was damaged in a fire that broke out at a private building in the posh Mall Road area here this afternoon. Though the Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered the removal of these generator sets, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has failed to get them removed.

Lack of awareness behind most hepatitis cases

People of the peripheral areas of the Ludhiana district are falling an easy prey to Hepatitis B and C as very few are aware of this disease. Experts of the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMC), Ludhiana, disclosed this fact after holding screening camps in these areas.

Pool party
The little Montessorians of ABC Montessori, Basant Avenue, enjoyed a splash pool party organised by the school. The scorching heat of the sun and daily uniform was put off by the children. Before waving ‘good bye’ for summer vacations, school gave a pool party to the children. The pool side was decorated with colourful umbrellas, balloons and tub toys. Man booked for duping employers
Ludhiana, May 22
A man has been booked for duping his employers of Rs 10 lakh. The accused has been identified as Satwinder Singh of Dugri. According to Palwinder Singh, a resident of Hargobind Nagar, he runs a hosiery factory and his two brothers Amarjit Singh and Sukhwinder Singh work as iron commission agent on Gill Road. The accused was handling the accounts of both the firms.
