Gandhian couple Maan Singh, Shashi Prabha honoured
Dehradun, May 12 Radha Bhen, president of the Sarv Seva Sangh, honoured the couple at a function held at the Arya Samaj Mandir here.
Biju Negi, president of the District Sarvodya Mandal, Dehradun, recounted the contribution of the couple and said, “Most of us did not have the good fortune of meeting Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Sarla Bhen and Vinoba Bhave but those of us who know Maan Singh Rawat and Shashi Prabha Rawat will agree that the couple has lived up to the ideals of the four great men and women I spoke about earlier,” said Negi. Yogember Singh Rawat implored the audience to take inspiration from Maan Singh Rawat and launch the anti-liquor movement once again. “Our youth are falling prey to liquor more than ever before. Things have come to such a pass that an entire generation has been lost. It is time that we raise our voice against the menace,” said Yogember. He added the members of Sarvodaya would soon meet the Chief Minister in this regard. A postgraduate from the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai, Maan Singh Rawat plunged into the Sarvodya movement declining even a fellowship to the USA. In 1954, he dedicated his life to the movement. He got married to Shashi Prabh and his resolve further strengthened as his wife too shared similar values. The couple had been associated with social movements in Uttarakhand for the last 60 years. “I often bemoan the falling standards of public ethics and moral values. Our nation is still young but we seem to have forgotten the teachings of Gandhiji and Vinoba Bhave,” said Maan Singh. Suchit Narang, a classical singer, rendered the popular bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To”, a favourite of Gandhiji, on the occasion. |
