Champions Trophy
Karthik back; selectors dump Gambhir, Yuvi

Mumbai, May 4
Dinesh Karthik earned a recall to the Indian ODI squad after a gap of three years while the selectors dumped Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh as they picked a 15-member squad for next month's Champions Trophy in England and Wales.

Besides Karthik, Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar also made their way into the side. The axe also fell on Ashok Dinda, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane.

Comeback men, Dhawan and Vijay will be two openers. Dhawan had made little impact in the five ODIs he had played but was in the limelight with the fastest Test century on debut against Australia in Mohali in February. Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pathan will form the pace attack.

Leggie Amit Mishra, one of the leading wicket takers in Indian Premier League (IPL), and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin are the two spinners. Dhawan, Vijay, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma are specialist batsmen while Karthik will be a back-up keeper for Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But Karthik's ability to bat at any position and his excellent fielding skills gives him a fair edge. Karthik, whose last of 52 ODIs was against Sri Lanka in August 2010, has been in great form for the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL.

He has scored 331 runs, including two half-centuries, from 10 matches with a highest score of 86. The Sandip Patil-led selection committee also picked 21 probables for the tri-series in the West Indies, which will follow the ICC Champions Trophy.

The 15 members of the Champions Trophy squad are also part of the probables. Gambhir, who is leading Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL, has been included among the probables for the tri-series in the West Indies.

The last Champions Trophy will be played in England and Wales from June 6 to 23. India will open their campaign with their Group B match against South Africa at Cardiff, June 6. The semi-finals are slated for June 19 and 20 and the final June 23.

Champions Trophy Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Murali Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra and Vinay Kumar.

Team to play 2 practice games

The Indian team is scheduled to play two warm-up games against Sri Lanka and Australia ahead of its ICC Champions Trophy Group B opener against South Africa next month in England.

The practice match against Sri Lanka is scheduled on June 1 followed by the tie against Australia on June 4. The 15-member Indian squad, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will leave for England on May 29, three days after the IPL final.

India would begin their campaign of the eight-team tournament against South Africa at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, Wales. They are to clash with the West Indies at the Kennington Oval in London on June 11 and then conclude the four-team group engagement on June 15 against arch-rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka are in Group A. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals on June 19 and 20. — Agencies
