Tribune News Service & PTI

New Delhi/Chandigarh, May 3
In a sensational case of alleged bribery for fixing a top-level position in the government, Railway Minister PK Bansal's nephew was arrested today by the CBI which also held Mahesh Kumar, a member of the Railway Board.

CBI officials said Bansal's nephew Vijay Singla was arrested in Chandigarh for accepting Rs 90 lakh in cash from Manjunath, a conduit of Kumar, who was recently promoted as member (Staff) and was trying to get a lucrative position as member (Electrical). Kumar was arrested in Mumbai. The CBI has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against him. The other person arrested by the CBI was Sandip Goyal, who allegedly assisted in brokering the deal.

Bansal, who was in the Capital, avoided the media despite repeated attempts to contact him. Searches were carried out by the CBI in Delhi, Chandigarh and other cities..

In an operation kept under wraps, the CBI kept a tab on Kumar's movements and swooped down on Singla at the time of bribe payment.

The CBI team also raided Singla’s Sector 28 residence. CBI officials had to wait for over 30 minutes to enter into the house and a mild scuffle also reportedly took place between sleuths and Singla’s family members. Kumar was General Manager (Western railways) and promoted recently as member Railway Board, a post equivalent to Secretary in the Government of India.
