Another chance for house tax, sewerage bill defaulters
Jalandhar, April 14 Mayor Sunil Jyoti said the MC had to recover over Rs 4 crore from a number of residents as house tax and water as well as sewerage bills. The MC had provided them the last chance to deposit their bills by May 31 without paying any interest and penalty after getting direction from the Punjab Local Bodies Department in this regard. Urging the residents to avail this golden opportunity, the Mayor warned the defaulters that if they failed to deposit their arrears by May 31, the MC would be left with no option but to attach their properties for the recovery of their arrears after formally issuing them notices under Section 138 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act. Earlier, the Punjab Government had decided to waive off the interest money and other penalties imposed on the outstanding bills of the house tax, water and sewerage bills. According to the decision, the consumers Bhagat Chunni Lal said the Punjab Government decided to waive off all interest money on all outstanding bills which had yet not paid. He clarified that May 31 would be the cut-off date for the residents to avail this facility and they had to pay the actual amount of the bills till then. The minister said that written instructions in this regard had already been dispatched to all the commissioners of the municipal corporations, regional deputy directors of the local urban bodies and executive officers of the all nagar councils and panchayats. The officers had also been told to sensitise the public about the initiative of the government so that more and more people could avail this opportunity, he added. |

However, the names of Navneet Kaur’s elder brother-in-law Sweety, her sister-in-law Kamaljeet Kaur and another acquaintance Bittu were not included in the FIR. At this, Navneet Kaur’s family members and relatives held a demonstration outside the Civil Hospital here on Sunday. Following this, their names were also included in the FIR. Navneet Kaur’s husband and his brother live abroad, but her mother alleged that they used to harass her on phone to bring Rs 8 lakh from her parents for purchasing a car. The police is investigating the matter. |
Issue white paper on PSPCL: Mohindra
Jalandhar, April 14 Brahm further said the Power Corporation was witnessing losses to the tune of thousands of crore annually. In the year 2006-07, the Power Corporation suffered a loss of Rs 1800 crore, in 2007-08 the loss was Rs 1611 crore. For the year 2008-09, the annual loss of Power Corporation was Rs 1292 crore, which went up to Rs 1623 crore for the year 2009-10. For the year 2010-11, the annual loss was Rs 2024 crore. The poor financial health of the Power Corporation could well be gauged from the fact that sometime ago, even the banks had denied short-term loans to the PSPCL. While demanding that the financial restructuring plan for Power Corporation be finalised without any further delay, the Congress MLA demanded that the SAD-BJP government must issue a white paper to know the health of the PSPCL and the failure of the government to bail out the Power Corporation from the debt-trap. After availing all loans, the PSPCL has a debt of Rs 22,000 crore. "The burden of the accumulated losses of the Power Corporation be written off by the state government", he added. |
No end to defiance of labour laws in factories
Jalandhar, April 14 Representatives of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the National Trade Union alleged this while addressing a rally of labourers held at the local Beant Singh Park here today to pay homage to 23 workers buried alive in Shital factory collapse last year. Had the labour laws been implemented in Shital factory, the mishap could have been averted, said JAC convener Rajesh Thapa from the AITUC while addressing the gathering. Director (Factories) and the Labour Department failed to perform their duties which resulted in the factory collapse, he alleged, adding that the Jalandhar police had excluded serious criminal sections at the behest of Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP government to provide relief to the factory owner. Apart from the JAC convener, Hari Muni Singh of the CTU and Ganga Prasad of the Punjab Nirman Majdoor Union also spoke on the occasion. The union leaders alleged that most of the family members of the 23 deceased workers had not been yet paid any announced relief so far. Further, they alleged that labour laws in most of the factories of Jalandhar were not implemented. Only about 25 per cent of the workers were allowed to mark their presence on the register. As a result, they were deprived of various benefits, including the EPF and ESI. Union leaders further alleged that officials of the Labour Department were hand in glove with most of the factory owners. |
Cong to revive its base among Dalits: Bajwa
Jalandhar, April 14 Announcing this while addressing his maiden public meeting in Jalandhar district on Dr Ambedkar’s 122nd birth anniversary on Sunday, Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa said, “While the first state-level function is being organised in Jalandhar, the venue of other such functions will be decided from time to time by the state Congress.” Interestingly, the Congress also dedicated Bajwa’s maiden rally in Jalandhar to Dr BR Ambedkar to revive its lost base in the Dalit-dominated Jalandhar district. While the Congress had to be content with just one out of then total 10 seats in the Assembly elections held in 2007, it could not win even a single seat out of the total nine seats after delimitation in Jalandhar district in the 2012 Assembly elections. Before addressing the gathering at the local Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall here on Sunday, Bajwa, accompanied by former PPCC chief Mohinder Singh Kay Pee, Punjab Congress general secretary Fateh Singh Bajwa, Ch Jagjit Singh, Ch Santokh Singh, PYC chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, Avtar Henry, Jagbir Singh Brar, Gurkanwal Kaur, Gurbinder Atwal, and CD Kamboj commemorated the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar by offering garlands at his statue at Nakodar Chowk in the morning. Bajwa later also visited Guru Ravidass Bhawan here. While addressing a meeting, he lauded the services of Dr Ambedkar for nation building. He said Dr Ambedkar was a visionary and an inter-cultural personality who rose from bottom to the highest position. He described him as the architect of the Indian Constitution in which he safeguarded the interests of the poor and downtrodden sections of society. He said Dr Ambedkar had laid the foundation of the Indian democracy. The future generations would continue to be inspired by the social values set up by Baba Saheb. Interestingly, the Congress managed to put up an impressive and united show. Punjab Congress general secretary Fateh Singh Bajwa and its vice-president Tarlochan Singh Soondh had camped in Jalandhar for the past few days for making today rally a success. Bajwa mixes with workers
Instead of sitting on the dais, Bajwa preferred to sit with the workers during the rally. He also enjoyed langar along with party workers after the rally. Appreciating his move, state co-convener of PPCC Legal Cell advocate GK Agnihotri said the Congressmen were joyous over Bajwa’s mixing with workers. |
Udan: General Knowledge project being implemented for 2nd time?
Jalandhar, April 14 A month later, a similar project, dubbed Udan, was started in another district by a teacher there. While it's been seven months since the project was first started in the district, recent instructions - issued by the state government, asking schools across the districts to implement the project from classes IV to XII - have put teachers of the district in a fix. Talking to The Tribune, district social studies coordinator Harsh Loomba said, "In the district, the project had been conceptualised - and started - by me as the General Knowledge project in September 2012. All senior secondary schools of the district were being sent questions on various topics like science, history, geography, politics, sports and above all current affairs, at the end of every month. These questions were meant as an exercise to check the development and comprehensibility of students about various projects and with the cooperation of teachers of various schools, we were conducting tests in all these subjects every week, among students." While the aim of both the projects was the same, the earlier one was compulsory and had the aim to benefit all (below and above average) students. However, the one introduced this month was optional and was meant to benefit only selected students, who chose to become a part of it. With the new project, Loomba says, teachers will have to conduct two tests with the same motive per week. Sources also said that as per the new project, students would also be charged Rs 10 to 20 for the expenses borne by the education department to get the tests conducted, but for the old one tests were being conducted for free. Interestingly, when being asked why the government would order a restart of a project already running in the district rather than letting it continue in its initial format, Loomba said the government had been unaware of the fact that the project was already running here. Notably, the new project would only be introduced afresh in classes IV and V, in which the previous project had not been introduced. For the rest of the classes, teachers were left to grapple with two kinds of tests. DEO Secondary, Neelam Kumari said, "There is no confusion regarding the project. General knowledge lessons would only benefit students. The GK of students in the state is already very poor and the contention being expressed about the project does not hold substance." ‘There'll be overlapping, confusion'
Conceptualised by the district social studies coordinator, the project had already been implemented in the district in September as the GK project and owing to instructions, now its new avatar the Udan project has been asked to be implemented by the state government. The fresh instructions, teachers say, will result in the overlapping of the project and confusion |
Gold price dip: Buyers thirst for more
Amritsar, April 14 The Bullion and Ornaments Merchants Welfare Association, vice-president, Anil Kumar Jain, said customers anticipated that the slide in gold prices would continue upto Rs 25,000 per 10 g gold. “It was not long ago that the yellow metal touched its highest ever price at Rs 32,850 and now a slide is dodging customers and traders alike,” he said. He said anticipation of Rs 25,000 per 10 gram gold price seemed untenable, but it could touch Rs 27,000. He said the customers had a tendency to hold back from investing in the unstable market. More stable the market, greater is the confidence of the customers. After having burnt their fingers in the bourses, the investors would move to invest in buying physical gold. Punjab Swarnakar Sangh vice-president Jaspal Singh Kanda said big buyers had lost about Rs 5.25 lakh per kg gold. He said the slide turned the sentiments of the investors negative. “Not only investors, but also sellers are holding back as they do not want to lose their margin.” He said many investors had procured the yellow metal during the earlier dip in the gold. Davinder Khanna, an investor, said it would take sometime for the investors to regain confidence in the gold. He said though his family required some gold in the near future to perform auspicious programmes, but keeping in view the falling prices in gold, they are keeping their fingers crossed. |
