Burgeoning traffic in front of Civil Hospital adds to visitors’ woes
Jalandhar, March 21 The entry to the hospital is a tough task with various traffic bottlenecks on the road - starting from Jyoti Chowk till Basti Adda Chowk - especially in front of this institution. Encroachments by shopkeepers and roadside vendors have further reduced the road width, thus adding to the woes of the visitors. Moreover, absence of permanent traffic police personnel at the entry and the exit points of the hospital have also aggravated the problem. The road is virtually ruled by auto-rickshaws, whose drivers drive recklessly, hardly caring patients and their attendants as they do not bother to give space for the vehicles carrying Ambulances and other vehicles ferrying patients to and from the hospital often get struck in traffic jams for long hours here adding to the agony of critical patients struggling for life, claimed Surinder Singh, a shopkeeper. Neither the hospital administration, nor the district administration have given a thought to deploy permanent police personnel to regulate vehicular traffic in front of the hospital, said Surinder Mittal, a local businessman. The area shopkeepers, however, demanded that separate stoppages should be earmarked for the auto-rickshaws to pick and drop passengers, which would help in reducing the traffic congestion. The administration should slap heavy penalties on the violators, so that they did not repeat the offences, they said. |

ADC asks revenue officials to expedite recovery
Jalandhar, March 21 While there are seven other districts from which the embossing fee is to be recovered, it was decided that an amount of Rs 37,74,790 be recovered from nearly 4,411 applicants of Jalandhar district, who could not then make out that they had in fact been making payment against fake challans. It is these applicants who are being considered as defaulters and are being made to pay up the fee all over again. Of the total applicants, only 299 have paid up the dues while the remaining 4,112 applicants are yet to pay up an amount of Rs 34,47,940. Divisional Commissioner SR Ladhar said nearly Rs 75 lakh had been recovered from all districts till date, which implies that the recovery from Jalandhar was comparatively much slow. In the monthly meeting with revenue officials held today, ADC Parneet Bhardwaj also expressed concern over the fact that an amount of Rs 17,61,78,495 was recoverable on account of stamp duty evasion as per Section 47A of the Indian Stamp Act. There had been a recovery of only Rs 21,60,215 on this account, that too from Shahkot last month. Bhardwaj ordered that the recoveries be made by imposing Section 48 of the Act and by way of arrears of land revenue. The only satisfactory part that came in the meeting was that the revenue collection by way of registries would definitely cross Rs 275 crore mark as an amount of Rs 265.5 crore had already been collected on this account till February 28. |

Patients ‘denied’ treatment on jurisdiction issue
Jalandhar, March 21 The health officials of Phillaur, Nakodar and areas surrounding Phagwara that fall under the jurisdictions of Jalandnar district have lodged their resentment against the authorities of the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, for not entertaining their referral cases for a long time. Health official during their meeting with the Civil Surgeon, Jalandnar, Dr RL Bassan, alleged the Phagwara hospital authorities were denying treatment to the needy patients referred by them just because they were registered with health institutions falling in Jalandhar district. This indifferent attitude of the Phagwara Civil Hospital authorities had been putting life of scores of critical patients in danger as their attendants had to rush them either to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, or some private hospitals, the health officials said. Dr Bassan while talking to The Tribune, said he would take up the issue with the Phagwara Civil Hospital authorities on priority basis. He also added that if needed a correspondence in writing would be made to the Senior Medical Officer of the Phagwara Civil Hospital. The Civil Surgeon also advised his colleagues to maintain their cool while treating patients, especially, elderly persons and politically influential people. The medicos were also asked to be in touch with the senior health officials at Jalandhar through Internet and send the daily report to the head office via email. Moreover, the health officials were also directed to prescribe generic and low cost medicines to the patients and display the lists of medicines available in their respective hospitals. |

Badal govt forgot its poll promises while presenting Budget, says Congress
Jalandhar, March 21 Sharma, who was accompanied by district Congress urban president Arun Walia and senior vice-president Kanwal Sachdeva, said, "Forget the Badal government's tall promises, it has even failed to fulfil its poll promise of increasing the old age and widow pension from Rs 250 to Rs 600." He said, "The Sheila Dikshit-led government is providing Rs 1,500 as the old age pension whereas the Badal government is just giving Rs 250 as the old age and widow pension. The ruling Akali Dal had made promise in its manifesto that the pension would be hiked to Rs 600 but it forgot its manifesto during the presentation of the budget in the Assembly on Wednesday." He said, "Various types of taxes and electricity tariff has been hiked, and that too retrospectively, which has put an extra burden on Punjabis, who are already reeling under the spiralling prices of almost all the essential commodities." The Congress leaders flayed the Badal government for failing to "provide salaries to employees of various departments". Walia said a large number of Congress workers would go to Chandigarh to participate in the charge-taking ceremony of Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa as Punjab Congress president. |
