Mid-day meal: Students served ‘dal’ after 2 hours
Ludhiana, March 4 Paras (name changed), a student, said he was not happy with the meal being served. "The meal is not as per the menu and the vegetables are stale at times. Today, we were not served dal/vegetable,” he lamented. A teacher said the scheme was not successful in urban areas. “Children are served fresh meals in rural areas. But here, lunch for about 35,000 children is prepared and it is not easy to maintain hygiene and quality. I fail to understand why the government is playing with the lives of children by providing low-quality food. Instead, they should be given milk packets and fruits, which is healthy and hygienic,” said the teacher. |

No takers for commercial sites, properties in city
Ludhiana, March 4 A couple of intending buyers had deposited eligibility fee of around Rs 25 lakh for each of the two sites meant for the construction of multi-storeyed residential complexes, but after waiting for more than five hours, GLADA officials decided to call off the auction. On offer were two pieces of land, measuring 12,826 and 12,196.80 square yard with a reserve price of over Rs 25.68 crore and 24.39 crore, respectively. Earlier also, a public auction conducted by GLADA on February 22 to sell a hotel site measuring 8,615 square yard in Sector 32-A with a floor price of Rs 51.69 crore, had met the same fate. No buyers had turned out and the auction had to be cancelled. A similar attempt to sell a prime commercial sites through the public auction by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust on February 26 had also turned out to be a flop show when only two out of a total 42 sites could be sold and the LIT had to be content with sale proceeds of just about Rs 55.30 lakh as against the Rs 13.66 crore which was the reserve price of all the commercial sites and properties intended to be out under the hammer. GLADA officials claimed that the lack of interest among buyers for prime commercial properties and sites was due to the overall recessionary trends in the real estate sector, sources in the realty market said the reserve price of the properties fixed by GLADA, the LIT and other government agencies was unrealistic and very high compared to prevailing market rates. "Another crucial factor having adverse impact on the sale of properties through public auction by GLADA and other government agencies is that there is no role of unaccounted money in these transaction which is very common in the open market for deals of such huge sizes," said a real estate agent. |

Riot victims take to road
Ludhiana, March 4 They also blocked Ferozepur Road for over an hour.
Surjit Singh, president, Danga Peerit Welfare Society, Punjab, who led the protest, said the families of riot victims had been residing in several LIG and MIG flats in Urban Estate, Dugri, Phase I, for the past more than 27 years. "Some of these flats have been duly allotted to the occupants as per policy of the Punjab Government whereas a few flats are yet to be allotted. But now notices of eviction are being issued to the occupants in violation of the government directions for allotment of the flats to the eligible occupants," he alleged while terming this as a conspiracy to once again uproot the riot victims. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Administrator of GLADA, the society demanded that flats should be allotted to the occupants wherever they were residing and strict action be taken against the officials threatening the riot-affected families with eviction. However, GLADA Additional Chief Administrator Baldev Singh asserted that the riot victims' body was raising a hue and cry to shield unauthorised occupants in the LIG and MIG flats. "The eviction notices to unauthorised occupants have been issued as per the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which GLADA is committed to enforce in letter and spirit," he added. |
