Board Examination Parents ferrying their children denied entry to the Cantonment area where the examination centre was located Nikhila Pant Dhawan Tribune News Service
Bathinda, March 2 It is learnt that the problem arose when the Army personnel at the gate stopped and refused entry to the parents, who were ferrying their kids to the examination centre. Even students with their own vehicles were not allowed to ride their way to the school. "If the pressure of the mathematics exam was not enough, the students had to walk more than a kilometre to reach their examination centre in the Cantonment area. Even those parents, who carried their identity cards along, were denied entry. More than 50-60 cars and two-wheelers were parked on the road outside the Cantonment," said Yadwinder Singh, principal of the Government Polytechnic College, Bathinda, who had gone there to drop his daughter who studies at St. Joseph’s Convent School. "Earlier, the vehicles were allowed entry to the Cantonment through the Raina Marg but this year the Army personnel changed it to the Thimmaya Marg and restricted the entry. After some of the parents argued with the Army personnel manning the gate, they were assured that an Army vehicle would ferry the children to the school. Despite the assurance, no vehicle arrived and the children had no option but to walk their way to the examination centre," said Rajiv Arora, director, AIR, Bathinda, who was among the parents gone there to drop their wards. "After parents blocked the traffic coming towards the Cantonment area, an Army personnel by the name of Nawab Singh Ghuman came out and told them that it was not in his knowledge that examinations were being conducted at the school inside the Cantonment and hence, confusion had prevailed," Arora added. Municipal councillor Iqbal Singh Dhillon was also there to see his son off. He said, "There was a lack of coordination between the school authorities, the Army administration and the traffic police. Some schools played prudent by transporting their students in schools vans which were allowed to enter the Cantonment. When we approached the principal of St. Joseph’s Convent School, she avoided addressing our worries." Dr GS Brar of Government Rajindra College said, "To add to the examination stress, the students had to cover such a long distance on foot. There are chances that a few students must have reached the examination centre late. Parents stranded outside the Cantonment were contemplating writing to the CBSE chairman about the problem faced by the students today. The parents were, however, allowed to enter the Cantonment to pick their children after the examination got over." Brar's son is also a student of St. Joseph’s Convent School. Schools like Sanawar and RBDAV were prepared beforehand to save their students from walking to the examination centre. "On March 1, when the Board examinations started, we had sensed the situation. We were even assured by the Army administration that they would provide their vans to ferry the students from the Cantonment gate to the examination cenre. However, we sent our students in our school van, which was allowed entry," said principal of RBDAV School Dr Satwant Bhullar. Some parents said the principal of the Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 first refused to acknowledge that she knew the hassle that students went through but later, argued that whatever little problem existed, it was immediately sorted out by the Army authorities.

Petrol price: Second hike in a fortnight flayed
Bathinda, March 2 Effective from today, petrol got costlier by Rs 1.40 (excluding VAT) a litre. Private oil companies announced a hike in the price of petrol citing an increase in its price in the international market. This is the second hike in the last fortnight. On February 16, the price of the fuel was increased by Rs 1.50 a litre. Notably, the actual hike in the price of petrol will be more after including VAT and other taxes. In Bathinda, it will now be available for Rs 77.81 a litre. A Veer Colony resident Ashok Parihar, while talking to TNS at a petrol pump near Teenkoni, said, “Only a fortnight ago, the government had hiked the fuel price and now it upped it again. Having one's own conveyance is becoming costlier day by day.” Daisy Kaur, a student of a private college in the city, said, "The increase in the price of petrol is unwarranted. The government played it smart by not announcing the hike in its budget for 2013-14. After presenting a mediocre budget, it hiked the price of petrol. This is a way of burning even a bigger hole in the common man's pocket." A retired teacher Gurwinder Singh Sandhu argued that though the government had no option but to increase the petrol price, the hike would hit the common man hard who was already reeling under the frequent price rise. “The government presented a realistic budget but did nothing to control inflation. Moreover, it has announced a hike in the price of petrol for the second time in two weeks. With the increase, the government should also strengthen the public transport system in cities like Bathinda. Soon, people may opt for travelling by public transport,” he said. "The demand for diesel cars has increased over the past few years. With petrol prices being hiked every now and then, buyers are preferring diesel vehicles to petrol-run automobiles. The popular perception that diesel cars prove to be cheaper in the long run is a little misconstrued. Diesel vehicles prove to be economical only if they are used for covering long distances. Someone who doesn't drive much should opt for a petrol car," said the manager of a car showroom on the Bathinda-Mansa road. |
