Darshan Aulakh distributes sweets among friends in Chandigarh. People in Chandigarh had their Oscar moment on Monday when director Kathryn Bigelow's Hollywood movie "Zero Dark Thirty" won an Oscar for sound editing at the 85th annual Academy Awards held at Los Angeles.

BJP leader manhandled
Chandigarh, February 25
High drama was witnessed at a UT police checkpoint on the road separating Sectors 23 and 36 late on Monday night when police personnel on duty allegedly misbehaved and roughed up BJP councillor Saurabh Joshi.

Slush, trampled rose beds is all that is left at Leisure Valley
Chandigarh, February 25
It will take more than a month for the main lawn of the Zakir Rose Garden to regain its glory, lost after it hosted a three-day rose festival here. Heavy rainfall and unexpected rush of visitors, being estimated at one lakh, caused serious damage to the sprawling lawn, which hosted all the activities including competitions, exhibitions and cultural functions during the festival that concluded yesterday.

NRI’s body was found at his house in Sector 41, Chandigarh, on late Sunday evening. Neighbours informed the police after smell began emanating from the house. The body has been kept at Government Multi Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, for autopsy.

Deadline to fix new number plates nears

The work of affixing high-security registration plates (HSRP) on vehicles in the city will be started at the Sector 17 office of the Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA), State Transport Authority office in Sector 18 and SDMs offices in Sector 42 and Industrial Area.

Education department raises demand
Chandigarh, February 25
After months of discussions, the education department has finally sent the proposal to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to get 3,472 new teaching as well non-teaching posts sanctioned, for the effective implementation of the RTE act in Chandigarh.

PG courses syllabi to be upgraded
Chandigarh, February 25
The syllabus of Post-Graduate courses at Panjab University (PU) is soon going to get broader and lengthier with a lot more topics added to them. The university has decided to revise the syllabus as per the University Grant Commission (UGC) since most of the departments at PU do not cover the entire syllabus as per UGC.

PU seeks faculty of subject experts
Chandigarh, February 25
All the appointments for the teaching posts at Panjab University, in future will be advertised on the basis of subject experts required in the department. Dean University Instructions (DUI) RK Kohli stated that the departments would have to identify the subject expert they required based on which the posts will be advertised.

PU mulls over introducing paid parking

Panjab University (PU) is mulling over to introducing the concept of paid parking deal with the growing traffic on the PU campus that has also led to parking woes. A draft of the proposal has already been sent to the Vice-Chancellor for consideration.

Youth run over by train
Ambala, February 25
A youth was run over by a train near Ambala City railway station last night. The deceased Shubham Anand was a resident of Radha Kishan Bazar, Ambala City. He was doing chartered accountancy course at Chandigarh but had been missing from his house since last evening. When he did not return home by late evening his parents started searching for him. When they were crossing Agarsain Chowk they were informed by someone that a youth was run over by a speedy train.

Health dept on toes to check spread of swine flu
Ambala, February 25
The authorities have been on their toes to check the spread of H1N1 virus ever since a 28-year-old man died of swine flu in the city. Sunil Kumar, a resident of Nicholson Road, died at a private hospital at Mohali after remaining on a ventilator for more than 10 days.

Court turns down murder accused’s bail application 
Mohali, February 25
While cancelling the bail application of Manpreet Kaur, accused of murdering her husband by serving him a soft drink laced with poison extracted from a lizard, the local court ordered to match the samples of the accused and her sister Baljit Kaur’s handwriting with the suicide note of the victim,Manmohan Singh.

Two arrested with 2.9kg of charas

On a tip off, the Narcotics Control Bureau(NCB), Chandigarh, seized 2.9 kg of charas from a taxi bearing a registration number of Himachal Pradesh, near the PGI bus stop, on late Sunday night.

A promising Athlete

Upneet Kaur, a hockey player, stood out in the local edition of "Speedstar" talent hunt organised by former international athlete PT Usha. Twelve-year-old Upneet secured the first position to book a berth in the main edition of the event.

Dept adds five more games to scholarship scheme
Chandigarh, February 25
The UT sports department has decided to add five more games to the sports scholarship scheme from next year. The events, including baseball, aquatic, equestrian, triathlon and fencing, have been included under the scheme.

55 caddies slug it out
Chandigarh, February 25
A Caddie Golf Tournament was organised by the Management of Panchkula Golf Club. The main purpose of the event was to promote golf among the weaker sections of society. A total of 55 caddies participated in two different categories. In Category A, Sudarshan won the top honours with a gross score of 75 while Ram Kishore attained the second place with a score of 78.

Coaching Programme

A six-day golf coaching programme will be conducted at the Forest Hill Golf and Country Club from March 19. The programme will be conducted between 5 to 6 pm.
