End of the World for Indian eves

Mumbai, February 5
India were tonight knocked out of the ICC Women's World Cup after suffering an upset 138-run drubbing at the hands of Sri Lanka in a crucial Group A encounter.

Chasing a challenging total of 283, the hosts put up a pathetic show to be bowled out for 144 in 42.2 overs at the Brabourne Stadium. Incidentally, this was India's first defeat to Sri Lanka in 18 matches, having won their previous 16 encounters with one ending in no result.

India lost three wickets for 38 runs in the 13th over, which included opener Poonam Raut, skipper Mithali Raj and last match centurion Harmanpreet Kaur. Kaur failed to score a run, while Raut (5), Raj (20) were trapped leg before by Eshani Kaushalya and Udeshika Prabodhini, respectively.

The India skipper shone briefly with the bat, striking four fours in the 35 minutes she spent in the middle.

The hosts reached 50 in 17 overs and it was always going to be an uphill task from there on, and they lost left-handed opener Thirushkamini Murugesan at the same score, adding to the woes.

The middle-order failed to forge a partnership and things plummeted for India as they kept losing wickets in quick succession.

India's best partnership was for the sixth wicket between Jhulan Goswami and Reema Malhotra, who added 37 runs. Malhotra was the top scorer for India with her 38 coming off 51 balls, and which included two fours.

India needed at least 251 runs to edge out the West Indies by virtue of having a better net run-rate and enter the Super 6 stage. — PTI

Mumbai, February 5
Harbhajan Singh termed the Irani Cup match as the "biggest" he could have got in recent times as the off-spinner intends to stage a comeback to the Indian cricket team for the upcoming four-match Test series against Australia.

The 32-year-old is part of the Rest of India team which will take on Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai tomorrow and Harbhajan said he wants to do something special to get picked for the Australian series, starting later this month.

"If I do well, I have a great chance to come back into the Indian side and Australia is coming over, so before the series starts, this was the biggest game I could have got," he told reporters here.

"I want to do something special and be relaxed and look to bowl well rather than running after the wickets. Wickets will come, if not today, tomorrow it will come. My aim is to bowl well, if I do that, I will get the rewards," he added.

The off spinner, who has 408 wickets in his kitty so far in 99 Tests, would join the select 100-Test club of Indian players, containing nine names, if he gets picked for the upcoming home series.

"I am not thinking about the 100th test and so on. I am looking forward for this game and hopefully I have a good game and we do well as a team and go forward from there. I don't want to think too much ahead, playing 100th test. It will be great if I get picked and it will be a great opportunity to do something special for team India," he said. The nine Indian cricketers to have played 100 Tests: Sachin Tendulkar (194), Rahul Dravid (163), VVS Laxman (134), Anil Kumble (132), Kapil Dev (131), Sunil Gavaskar (125), Dilip Vengsarkar (116), Sourav Ganguly (113) and Virender Sehwag (102).

Nayar seeks Sachin's advice

Handed the captaincy role after injury to Ajit Agarkar, Mumbai skipper Abhishek Nayar on Tuesday said that he would take help from senior players like Sachin Tendulkar in leading the Ranji champion side in the Irani Cup match against Rest of India which begins in Mumbai on Wednesday.

"It will be a challenge. I will be leading Mumbai for the first time at the senior level. It will be a big challenge but I have people to help me like Sachin (Tendulkar), Rohit (Sharma) and Ajinkya (Rahane). So I think with their help, the work will become easier. Hopefully we have a good game," he said on the eve of the match.

"I think I will obviously enjoy it. It does add a bit of pressure. With the help of my team mates, hopefully, we can have a good game."

The Mumbai bowling attack looks depleted in the absence of Agarkar and Zaheer Khan and Nayar said, "We obviously have a young attack. We have got four bowlers who are almost playing their first season.

"It is not going to be as easy as we think it is but I think, it is a chance for someone to step up and show what they are worth. It is always going to be an opportunity for everyone. Hopefully, we can deliver. Whatever we have been doing in the nets, hopefully we can implement that in the match and give our best," he said.

Asked about the possible team composition for this match, he said, "Team is pretty much there. We haven't decided the 11 as of now, we will decide once we have a look at the pitch in the morning. We look good as a batting unit, bowling is a bit inexperienced."

Mumbai has been on the losing end on all the six Irani Cup matches they have played and Nayar said, "It is difficult to analyse all six times. — PTI

Irani: A chance for rejects, aspirants to impress selectors

Mumbai, February 5
The five-day Irani Cup match between Mumbai and the Rest of India, commencing at the Wankhede Stadium here tomorrow, offers a good chance for some India rejects to press for recalls and other aspirants to showcase their talent in front of the national selectors.

Rest of India, led by one-day discard Virender Sehwag, has a good all-round team on paper and the list includes Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth - eager for India call-ups after being ejected out of the team on basis of form or fitness or both.

The rest outfit also contains openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay either of who can open with Sehwag and push for berths in the Test team to take on Australia later this month.

Vijay was the third opener for the lost Test series against England without playing a game while Dhawan could force his way in with a solid display as replacement for under-performing Delhi mate Gautam Gambhir.

Sehwag, a certainty for the opening Test at Chennai from February 22, would also be eager to get among the runs against a good Mumbai attack spearheaded by Dhawal Kulkarni after being cold-shouldered for the one-day series against England. Mumbai would be led by Abhishek Nayar, a top pick in last Sunday's IPL auction by Pune Warriors, in the absence of the injured Ajit Agarkar.

There is the consistent domestic performer Wasim Jaffer also in the mix of openers though the 34-year-old campaigner last played for India in a Test at Kanpur five years ago against South Africa.

There are also middle order aspirants from both sides, with Mumbai opener Ajinkya Rahane too in the lot after being chosen by the selectors as a middle order batsman in the team which played against England in the four-Test rubber.

The others include Suresh Raina and Manoj Tiwari, from the Rest ranks, and Rohit Sharma. Sachin Tendulkarwould get another chance to get into the groove for the Australia series. — PTI

BCCI denies 30 English players conditioning practice

Chandigarh, February 5
The Board of Cricket in India has in effect barred 30 young players from several English counties from embarking upon a tour designed to get used to Indian conditions.

Around 30 players from Yorkshire, Durham, Kent, Hampshire, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire were scheduled to tour India over the next few weeks to pick up the skills required on the subcontinent's spinning tracks, in a visit organised by Sachin Bajaj of Pune's Global Cricket School.

However, the Telegraph has reported that the BCCI has instructed all ground authorities in Pune that no foreign players must use their facilities without official permission. Further, the permission has not been granted in this particular case.

The young players, with the exception of those from Durham, will now go to Sri Lanka instead.

Developmental sides touring India has not been a rare occurrence and Bajaj's institution has organised several such trips for English cricketers in the past. But, for the first time in seven years, the BCCI has moved to put an end to this practise.

The Telegraph believes that this move comes as a reaction to India's humiliating 2-1 defeat in the Test series to Alastair Cook's young and unfancied English team. The paper wrote that the BCCI is thought to be "particularly annoyed" that Joe Root, who made a stunning Test debut in the final Test in Nagpur, had already had such vast experience of Indian conditions before he played his first match.

During England's tour too, actually, a row had arisen when the BCCI considered the England Performance Programme's tour, running alongside the Test tour, as unsanctioned.

Steven Finn had played for the EPP against the DY Patil Academy XI in Mumbai in late November, bowling 23 overs to prove his fitness for the Eden Test.

Reacting to this, the BCCI wrote to the ECB as it understood that Test squad members would not participate in such matches. The ECB apologised but also pointed out that the match was not even an 11-a-side game and so was not an official match. Root also played in that match and made 166.

The EPP played another three-day match against the same opponents in early December, followed by three matches against the Netherlands in Pune, before the two T20I matches between England and India.

The paper noted that by employing so many foreigners in IPL, India has been helping its international opponents for many years. By contrast it bans its centrally contracted players from appearing in English county cricket. — TNS

Prepare sporting pitches in ipl-vi: Board to curators

The BCCI gave clear instructions to the curators of all IPL venues not to bow down to the pressure from the franchises regarding the preparation of tailor-made wickets for their respective home matches in the sixth edition of the cash-rich league. The decision was taken at a meeting of the members of various state associations and their curators with the top brass of BCCI. "Clear instructions have been handed out to the curators that they should prepare sporting wickets and should not listen to any requests from the franchises. The franchise owners have also been apprised that they should not put any type of pressure on the curators to prepare wickets of their choice," a member of a state unit said.

"Neither the curators nor the franchises will be allowed to speak to the media on pitch related issues," he added.

During the meeting, the BCCI also decided that Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium won't hold any matches of IPL 6 due to the long-standing impasse between the state's sports council, custodians of the stadium, and the Rajasthan Cricket Association. The MCA also asked the BCCI to form a uniform guideline regarding who all can sit in dug out or enter the playing arena. — PTI

End of the World for Indian eves

Mumbai, February 5
The Indian women’s team was knocked out of the ICC Women's World Cup by Sri Lanka after they were all out for 144 in 42.2 overs in reply to Sri Lanka’s 282/5 in 50 overs. In the end, Sri Lanka win by 138 runs and get into the super sixes. India needed either an outright win or 251 runs to qualify for the Super Six stage on the basis of net run rate.

Batting first, Lanka batswoman Deepika Rasangika topscored with 84 runs, while Yasoda Mendis (59) and Eshani Kaushalya (56 off 31 balls) chipped in with useful contribution.Lanka added 94 runs in the last 10 overs.

Jhulan Goswami bagged three wickets but that didn’t prove enough.

England beat WI, enter Super 6s

Defending champions England became the first team to enter the Super Six stage from Group A in the ICC Women's World Cup when they recorded a six-wicket victory over the West Indies.

England shot out the West Indies for a paltry 101 in 36.4 overs after the latter opted to bat first at the BKC ground and then made heavy weather of the chase by making 103 for four in 35 overs to finish the league with four points from three games.

West Indies now await the result of the day-night game between hosts India and Sri Lanka, the fourth team in the group who have beaten England in the group stage, to see whether they go through on better net run-rate or get eliminated.

The holders started slowly with a half century opening stand, but lost four wickets in a heap before chasing down the modest target with plenty to spare. Openers Danielle Wyatt, who made 40 in 80 balls with 6 fours, opened the England run-chase with Arran Brindle as skipper Charlotte Edwards was not feeling too well. They suffered a mini collapse by losing the duo as well Sarah Taylor and Lydia Greenway as the score advanced from 66 to 79 and then managed to cross the line.

In the morning the West Indies, who were on a high coming into this game after a comprehensive 209-run win over Sri Lanka, found the going very tough against the defending champions' seam attack and were shot out in just 36.4 overs. It left England with the easy task of winning the game at a very modest asking rate of 2.04.

Pakistan crash out

CUTTACK: Pakistan today crashed out of the ICC Women's World Cup after suffering a heavy 126-run defeat against South Africa in their concluding group league fixture at the Barabati Stadium. Pakistan were shot out for 81 in 29.4 overs while chasing 208 for victory as they finished their World Cup campaign without a single win. South Africa rode on Marizanne Kapp's unbeaten 150-ball 102 and his unconquered 128-run sixth-wicket partnership with Dane Van Niekerk (77-ball 55 not out) to post a competitive 207 for five in their alloted 50 overs.

Electing to bat, South Africa were left tottering at 79 for five in 23.5 overs but Marizanne's maiden international hundred and her record century-plus stand Niekerk got the team out of the woods.

India play Palestine in football friendly

Kochi, February 5
With less than a month left for the important AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers, India would look to fine-tune their combination in their international football friendly against Palestine.

Coach Wim Koevermans has added a few new faces and some players who had been in the sidelines for a while in his 23-man squad for the match, hoping to find out who would go to the Myanmar capital of Yangon for the March 2-6 AFC Challenge Cup Group A qualifiers.

The Dutch tactician has recalled Gurjinder Kumar, Raju Gaikwad, Lalkamal Bhowmick, Sushil Kumar while C K Vineeth and Arata Izumi made their first forays into the national sqaud, the latter becoming the first Person of Indian Origin to do so.

Palestine, who are ranked 152nd in FIFA charts as compared to India's 166th, have nine players who did national duty in the West Asia Cup last December.

For Koevermans, it would be important to win the match as India have not won an international friendly for a long time, the latest defeat being the 0-2 result against Singapore. A win will also give India points in rankings. — PTI

It’s time Indian officials worked for sport: Negre
Deepankar Sharda/TNS

Jalandhar, February 5
“KPS Gill is a hard man to convince!” This may not be a surprise for most of us, but for Leandro Negre, president of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), it was a real shock. In his efforts to resolve the tussle between Hockey India and India Hockey Federation, the former European Hockey Federation president found Gill a hard nut to crack.

“Indian hockey is surrounded with dark clouds of ego and politics. The country has the world’s best talent with all modern facilities. But the approach is negative. I have met Gill several times, talking only about hockey, but sorry to say, no solution came out,” said Negre.

“It’s good to govern for several years but how long more? Everyone needs to move on, hand over responsibility to the younger generation. I will also do the same. The mentality should be to not be stuck to one thing. Otherwise the sport will suffer,” he went on.

Over International Olympic committee’s ban on the Indian Olympic Association, he added, “It’s unfortunate that a nation like India is suffering such a setback. Nevertheless, doors are not closed . The nation should come to a consensus to order to promote sports. Officials should work for promoting sport, rather than demoting it.”

“I have been with many officials and I advise them to stop involving politics in sport. Games are among pure institutions of a nation, they provide opportunities to youngsters... They are the best way to earn money, they provide a platform for unity and showing a nation’s strength. It should not be destroyed for personal reasons or egos. If we have got a chance to polish our nation’s future, we should perform it in a wise way. Shortcomings do occur, but one needs to face and overcome them,” said Negre.

On the ongoing Hockey India League, he said: “It’s turning out to be a good event. In the next edition I will request the organisers to add more teams, to open doors to youngsters. I believe the upcoming World Hockey League will be a great boost for Indian hockey,” said Negre.

“We want India to host the Champions Trophy, World Cup matches, international events but all we need is clear hearts,” he said. “Politics, egos and unwanted interferences should be kept aside. I want hockey to be popular like cricket here!”

Delhi beat Punjab

Meanwhile, the Delhi Waveriders inflicted a 3-2 defeat on Punjab Warriors today. Delhi scored early through Rupinder Pal Singh off a penalty-corner, and Dutchman Tim Jenniskens doubled the lead in the 11th minute. Punjab got one back through Malak Singh in the 18th minute, but Lloyd Jones Norris scored for Delhi, who lead 3-1 at half-time.

The home team played erratic hockey, missing several chances, including four penalty-corners. Chirstopher Ciriello finally the team’s sixth penalty-corner in the dying minutes of the game.

Why appoint a 90-yr-old as secy? Sports Min to NRAI

New Delhi, February 5
Apparently not happy with the appointment of 90-year-old Col (Retd) Jaswant Singh as 'honorary' secretary of the National Rifle Association of India, Sports Minister Jitendra Singh has sought an explanation from the NRAI on the move.

It was reliably learnt that Singh yesterday spoke to NRAI president Raninder Singh on the issue of appointing the veteran shooting administrator to the post, and asked him to explain the reasons for making such a move.

"The sports minister asked him (Raninder) to explain why did he appoint a 90-year-old to the post. The NRAI president tried to do a bit of explaining. It seems the minister was not too impressed with the move," a source close to the NRAI said.

In a surprise move, the NRAI, during its governing body meeting on December 23, appointed Singh who also served as the association's secretary-general in the '70s and '80s.

The NRAI defended the move saying that it's only an "honorary post given to someone who has served the federation for many years" with distinction. The move comes at a time when the government is pushing all the national sports federation to implement its sports code. As of now there is, however, no confirmation of whether the NRAI would withdraw the proposal of appointing Singh as one of the six secretaries.

Though his appointment is not a direct violation of the sports code as only the principal office-bearers — president, secretary, treasurer and the vice presidents — of national sports federations come under its purview, it certainly reflects how the NRAI views the code. — PTI

Mahesh Bhupathi slammed the AITA for the way it formed a three-member panel to look into the issues raised by the rebels, alleging that the panel would be “biased” and serve no purpose.
