One-man panel to probe Walmart ‘lobbying’

New Delhi, January 24
The Union Cabinet today approved setting up of a one-man committee to probe allegations that retail giant Walmart indulged in lobbying to gain entry into the Indian market.

The Cabinet, at its meeting chaired by Prime Minister, also gave approval for an inquest into the fact whether these activities undertaken by Walmart contravened the Indian law.

A statement issued by the government said, “The Union Cabinet today approved the appointment of a one-man committee into the media reports concerning Walmart.” The panel would be headed by a retired high court chief justice or judge.

The commission will submit its report within three months of its constitution. It is obligatory on part of the government to table the probe report as well as action-taken report in Parliament. — TNS
