Amritsar, January 23
A Pakistan inmate lodged in the Amritsar Central Jail has been found in possession of a mobile phone.
During questioning, Mohammad Akram Chaudhary (57) told the authorities that he had procured the phone from an Indian prisoner lodged in the jail for drug trade, sources said.
The authorities are yet to ascertain the period for which the prisoner had been using the mobile phone and the identity of those he had contacted over the phone. The dual SIM phone was found during a search by jail authorities on Tuesday evening.
Chaudhary, a resident of Lahore, was arrested for overstay a year ago and was lodged in the Kapurthala jail. He was shifted to the Amritsar jail over three months ago.
Jail Superintendent Amrik Singh Waraich said the jail authorities had been monitoring the activities of some foreign nationals, especially those from Pakistan, following intelligence inputs.
At least 47 foreign nationals are currently lodged in the jail. Of these, 28 are Pakistanis. “We had been keeping a close watch on the inmates from Pakistan and Bangladesh. This Pakistan national had been searched several times before. The mobile phone was seized in a search operation yesterday,” he said.
Chaudhary has named an Indian inmate, Gurdial Singh, from whom he had procured the mobile phone.
“The matter has been referred to the police. We will now retrieve the call details,” the officer added.
