The state president of the Front, Rajinder Kaur Lopo, and the district president Sinder Kaur Sibia convened a meeting at Gurdwara Haji Rattan. Later, workers took out a protest march till the office of the Deputy Commissioner raising slogans against the state government.

They said by handing over the mid-day meal scheme to contractors, the government would end up making things difficult for the poor people.

"Contractors are bound to make profit out of the food provided to poor children, which should not happen," they said.

The protesters alleged that a committee had been formed under the chief secretary, Punjab, to take decisions about mid-day meals, but Education Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka had arbitrarily introduced the contract system in the scheme.

They added that in the financial year 2011-12, a total Rs 226.68 crore were collected under the scheme, which included contributions of the state and Central governments. However, only Rs 162.28 crore could be spent while the rest amount remained unutilised.

Notably, the scheme faced closure in many schools due to lack of funds.

The leaders demanded that cooks be paid an arrear of Rs 3 crore which was pending with the government. They also demanded that the salary of cooks be increased as per the labour laws and that the decision to give contract out the scheme be withdrawn soon.

Bathinda, January 20
The joint platform of mass organisations today held a convention to protest against what they alleged was the wrong economic policy being pursued by the Central Government.

The key speaker at the convention was Mangat Ram who stressed upon the need to tighten the noose around the tax evaders and take steps to improve the plight of the commoners.

He said the intentions of the government could be gauged from the fact that in the name of privatisation and liberalisation, it is increasing the inflation which is directly affecting the common man.

In such an atmosphere, only a few businessmen in the country are flourishing while the gap between the haves and the have-nots is increasing.

The speakers at the convention said state governments too are implementing similar policies that are affecting the people across the country.

They said the actual benefits accruing from the government policies are not availed of by the common man but the wrong policies actually affect them. Basic facilities like health, education, employment, drinking water and sanitation are still out of the reach of the common man.

The speakers said the essential and basic facilities kept dwindling since 1991 in the country and the pressure of paying taxes is on the rise. The figure of more than 2 lakh farmers committing suicide is quite alarming and the government needs to look into the matter seriously.

The leaders said a massive rally would be organised in this regard on February 12 and they would support a strike by the trade unions to help raise the voice of the people against the inequality.
