Muktsar, January 8
A day after the Moga police booked nearly 400 beneficiaries of 11 villages for allegedly selling five-marla residential plots allotted to them free-of-cost about 15 years ago, the state government today decided to conduct a statewide survey to check such irregularities.

On the sidelines of the National Livestock Championship here, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats Surjeet Singh Rakhra said the department would conduct a statewide survey in this regard.

"Apart from registering FIRs against persons involved in the illegal act, we have decided to check the status of the whole scheme under which the plots were distributed to poor landless people across the state at different times," said Rakhra.

He said, "After a thorough probe, strict action would be taken against all those found guilty."

The alleged "scandal" came to the fore after a Sangrur resident filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Asked about the confusion prevailing about the ward-wise Panchayat elections, he said, "Whenever the government starts a new scheme, the opposition is against it. There is no confusion among the commoners about the wards in villages. The move will prove helpful in conducting the elections."

Rakhra also claimed that the basic infrastructure in all villages of the state including Panchayat Ghars would be upgraded and the process was underway.

Meanwhile, the five-day National Livestock Championship and Milking Competitions began at the Guru Gobind Singh Stadium here today. The dog show stole the show on the first day of championship.

Biting cold and foggy weather notwithstanding, the inaugural day saw a large number of animals being brought to participate in various events.

Nearly 5,000 animals from Punjab and neighbouring states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi are expected to participate in the championship. Prizes worth Rs 1.25 crore would be distributed among the winners in total 63 categories.

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats Surjeet Singh Rakhra and Rajya Sabha MP Balwinder Singh Bhunder were the chief guests on the occasion.

Fazilka, January 8
The Fazilka police nabbed two drug peddlers this morning and recovered over two quintals of poppy husk from their possession.

With the arrest, the police claims to have busted an inter-state gang of drug smugglers. The contraband was reportedly being brought from the neighbouring Rajasthan.

Fazilka DSP Ram Parkash said a police party led by Arniwala police station in-charge Darshan Singh had laid a barrier near Dabwala Kalan village. An Innova car (HR-57-1712) was intercepted and its search led the police to recover two quintals and 10 kg of poppy husk filled in six jute bags, each weighing 35 kg.

The police arrested the two occupants of the car. They have been identified as Shaminder Singh, a resident of Bahadur Khera village in Fazilka district, and Shakeel Hussain, a resident of Marwar in Nagaur district (Rajasthan).

The market price of the poppy husk is estimated to be around Rs 2.5 lakh.

A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the two accused.
