Chief Secy reviews arrangements for R-Day
Dehradun, December 31 Jain said the occasion would be celebrated with simplicity but strict security arrangements would be made on the day. He directed the officials concerned to start preparations and to publicise the programmes to be organised at the state and district levels. A 'kavi sammelan’ will be organised by the Cultural Department on the eve of Republic Day on January 25. All government buildings will be lit on January 25 and 26 from 6 pm to 11 pm. The Tricolour will be hoisted in all government institutions at 9.30 am. The Governor will unfurl the flag at Parade Ground at 10.30 am. The tableaux of various government departments will be exhibited on the occasion and freedom fighters residing in Dehradun at present will be felicitated. |

Tourists throng Mussoorie for New Year bash
Mussoorie, December 31 Tourists began pouring in since early morning today to celebrate New Year in Mussoorie. The hoteliers also welcomed tourists with open arms and offered various packages, including dinning and partying at nominal costs. The effect of the death of the Delhi gang-rape victim was visible as tourists from Delhi, who usually frequented the town on the New Year eve, arrived in a small number. However, the deficit was made up by tourists from Dehradun and Saharanpur, keeping the business community of the town busy. Balloons and decorative masks were also in demand as people wore them in order to greet each other on New Year. Celebrities such as Sachin Tendulkar, Arshad Warsi and Kabir Khan, besides eminent authors of the town, namely Ruskin Bond, Ganesh Saili and Stephen Alter, celebrated New Year close doors with their family members. Ganesh Saili extended New Year greetings and said he had resolved to keep working and writing more books for his fans in 2013. Bond also extended New Year greetings to his fans, especially children. He said he was looking forward to New Year as a number of his books were set to be released in the first half of 2013. Warsi greeted the people of the town and said he did not believe in having a New Year resolution as these were never accomplished. Therefore, he is taking life as it comes. MUSSOORIE: The administration has geared up for the mad rush of tourists to Mussoorie who have begun arriving in hoards to celebrate the New Year here. The police has already increased the vigil at all vantage points in the town to avoid any untoward incident today. According to CO, Mussoorie, Harbans Singh, two platoons of the PAC have been called along with five senior constables and one traffic sub-inspector to manage the traffic and control the crowd on the New Year eve. The vehicular movement would remain prohibited till tomorrow, added Harbhans Singh. The SDM, Mussoorie, Narayan Singh Dangi said the DJ would not be allowed to play after 10 pm and strict watch would be kept on hotels serving liquor without licence. The police is planning to conduct tests for drunken driving and book them under various acts to avoid accidents. The hotels have been decorated with ornamental lights and are offering lucrative packages which include dining and wining for the New Year bash. However, the mood remains subdued due to the death of the Delhi gang rape victim as it could have bearing on the celebrations this year. |

Dehradun, December 31 Bisht said he was deeply hurt with the rape incident and that was the reason why he tried to end his life. He said he had planned to set himself ablaze in front of the Governor House. The police, who was informed about the incident, reached the spot in time and overpowered the victim before he could set himself afire. He was taken to the City Magistrate. Bisht kept demanding death sentence for the accused in the rape case so that nobody could dare to repeat the dastardly He also demanded amendment in the legal provision regarding the matter of rape where the rape trials could be expedited and stricter punishment could be meted out to culprits. Signature drive for death to rapists Members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) today conducted a signature campaign against violence against women and demanding death sentence to the culprits of the Delhi rape case at DAV College here today. A large number of students participated in the signature campaign. Young girl students condemned the Delhi rape incident and demanded stringent punishment for the perpetrators of the heinous crime. They also demanded immediate change in the law to give death penalty to the rapists. The NSUI leaders pledged that their organization would fight for the demand from streets to Parliament. Later in the evening, a group of youngsters took out a "Mashaal Rally" to demand death sentence for the accused. |
No headway in woman's 'rape', murder case
Dehradun, December 31 Her body was found in the jungle of Sabhawala on Saturday. According to the post-mortem report of the victim that was released today, she died of shock and haemorrhage. Circle officer Jagdish Chand said: “It is confirmed that she had been murdered. Blood had been coming out of her mouth when the body was found. The post-mortem report has confirmed that she had been attacked with a Gunni Devi, who led a solitary life, had gone to collect firewood from the jungle on Saturday. When she did not return till late, villagers started searching for her. Later, they found her body under a tree. The body sustained injury marks on head, face and belly. The police is suspecting it to be a case of rape and murder. The circle officer said the picture would be clear after the report of slides taken to confirm rape came. SP (Rural) GS Dhyani said, “The victim is survived by eight children. Seven of them live in different cities, whereas her one son lives in the same village along with his family but in a different house. The victim’s husband, Tula Ram, had died 15 years ago. Dehradun, December 31 The lone goal was self goal scored by Pradeep of the Gorkha Rangers team in the 21st minute of the game. The Gorkha Rangers team tried hard for the equalizer but the solid defence of Balaji Boys prevented them from scoring. The City Young football team will play against Gypsy XI in tomorrow' s match. |

Gaurav took 4 wickets for 11 runs for the DG (Health) team. In reply, the DG team scored 88 runs without any loss, winning the match by 10 wickets. Realtor found dead in hotel room
Dehradun, December 31 According to information, Sharma had consumed liquor along with two of his friends, Nagender and Arpit, last night. Both his friends left the hotel at 9.30 pm. They left the door of the room open and Sharma did not bolt it from inside. In the morning, when a hotel employee saw the room open, he peeped inside and found Sharma lying on a sofa. Since there are no injury marks on the body, the police is suspecting that he might have died due to excessive consumption of liquor. His friends were also interrogated, but nothing came out of that. The post-mortem report of the victim is, however, still awaited. Sharma would visit Dehradun quite often and stay in this hotel. He said it seemed to be a case of personal enmity. Jagdish Chand said the victim’s personal equation with her children and relatives could be a different matter. However, the police could not ignore this at the moment. They were gathering information about strangers who were seen going towards the jungles that day. The sketches of two people have also been prepared.
