A day of protests in Dehradun
Dehradun, December 20 In Dehradun, the bank employees gathered at Ashley Hall in the morning and raised slogans against the Centre. The protesters alleged that the banking reforms would be detrimental to the future of the nationalised banks in the country and even hurt the interests of the common people. Subsequently, the protesters staged a protest march that started from Ashley Hall and after passing through the Rajpur Road-Clock Tower route culminated back at Ashley Hall. The employees of the State Bank of India did not participate in the strike though employees of the State Bank of Patiala and the State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur abstained from work. Employees of Federal Bank and Nainital Bank also participated in the strike. Jagmohan Mehndiratta, general secretary of the Uttaranchal Bank Employees Union, said the Centre intended to bring private investment in the banking sector that would lead to exploitation of bank employees and also hurt the interests of the people. He added the Banking Reforms Bill also calls for merger of banks, which would further lead to retrenchment of employees. Mehndiratta said the Centre through the Bill was also trying to bail out loan defaulters, which was not in the interests of the banks. The Centre should rather allow the banks to confiscate the property of the defaulters. The All India Bank Employees Association, the All India Bank Officers Association and the Bank Employees Federation of India had given a joint call for strike. |

Kabaddi gains popularity among rural girls
Haridwar, December 20 Girls, particularly from rural background, are opting for this sport of the Indian-origin. In the course of the ongoing 60th Senior Kabaddi Championship being held in Haridwar, The Tribune talked to some international female players who are representing the country on the international platform besides pursuing their college studies. Priyanka Negi, hailing from a rural district in Himachal Pradesh, has to her credit a gold medal in the first Women Kabaddi World Cup held in Patna this year. A student of BA, Priyanka has also received Parshuram Sport Award with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh for her being the only player from a hill state in the team that won the coveted world cup. “Initially, I felt hesitant in opting for kabaddi as a career, but seeing my hard work and determination my family supported me,” said Priyanka. Similarly, Ritu Negi, captain of the Gold Winning 2011 Junior Asian Championship Indian team haling from a semi-urban town, attributes her success to her parents, Bhuwan Singh and Poornima Negi, for motivating her to opt for kabaddi despite limited options five years back. She has also to her credit a bronze in the Senior National Championship and a number of school medals in various kabaddi tournaments. “Girls from rural background or semi-urban areas are shining in every sport, and kabaddi is no exception. May be due to our upbringing, hard life and sheer determination to excel against odds makes us more competitive when we opt for sports as a career,” remarked Ritu. The increase in the usage of synthetic turf instead of traditional muddy soil is likely to have the same negative impact as it had on hockey when the game turned to Astroturf in 80s from natural grass. To this, Pooja Thakur, ex junior Indian captain and gold medallist in several international championships, reacted that the hockey turnaround would not be faced by India in kabaddi. Pooja, who has now got a job in the Excise Department owing to her achievements in kabaddi, explained confidently, “We are being given rigorous training both on synthetic turf and natural grounds. Besides, the Sports Authority of India, Kabaddi Federation and Olympic Association is providing us with synthetic turfs in every state so that we get acclimatised to the new surface.” |
