Chandigarh, December 23
"If you see a girl or a woman standing or walking alone, then stop and ask her if she is all right. Escort her home if she does not have a conveyance." These were the directions of UT SSP Naunihal Singh to an impromptu gathering of 195 policemen led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Roshan Lal on Wednesday night.

For tricity cops, passing a comment not eve-teasing
Panchkula/Chandigarh, December 23
“When someone passes a comment on you, it's not eve-teasing. When someone touches you, then it can be termed as eve-teasing." These were the words of a Chandigarh policewoman manning the women helpline (2700448) when she was called regarding a complaint of eve-teasing to check how effective the helpline was.

PCR vehicles to be deployed at 59 spots
Chandigarh, December 23
In the wake of the Delhi gang rape that has triggered protests in various parts of the country, the UT police has identified 59 spots across the city where PCR vehicles will be deployed round the clock. The 59 PCR vehicles will also provide assistance to people, especially working women and girls, during night hours (11 pm to 5 am).

10-year-old boy hit by car, dies
Panchkula, December 23
A 10-year-old boy was killed after he was hit by a car being driven by Ravi Lal, wife of a retired IAS officer, on the road separating Sectors 8 and 17 in Panchkula this afternoon. The victim was on the way to meet his mother and was crossing the road when the mishap took place.

I found that the lights of park in our Sector 45/D and 45/C have not been working for the past one year and our current mayor is busy in laying foundation stones of new fountains or green belts. What is the use of old green belts and fountains and lights if they are not in working condition?

City traffic takes toll on pedestrians, bikers
Innocent lives continue to be snuffed out on the city roads. On an average, one fatal accident is reported in every three days here. This despite the wide roads, traffic signals and a large police force deployed on traffic spots. The country’s “richest” city, with wide roads and beautified rotaries, has added a dubious distinction to it with pedestrians and two-wheeler riders being most unsafe on its roads.

Flights delayed, cancelled for second day
Chandigarh, December 23
Delays and cancellations of flights remained the order of the day at the Chandigarh Domestic Airport for the second day in a row. While three flights were cancelled in the morning, others remained behind the schedule by at least one to two hours throughout the day.

CPI demands strict punishment for culprits

In order to express anger of the people of the city and show solidarity with the victim of the Delhi gang rape, the Communist Party of India (CPI) organised a protest at the Sector 20 Masjid Ground here today.

Patent granted
Dr Jaspreet Singh, assistant professor, department of chemistry, Punjabi University, has been granted a patent in the USA for developing a technology on corrosion protection of metal parts without affecting its conductive properties. Dr Jaspreet has recently been invited by University of South Florida, Tampa, USA, as a visiting scientist to work on a prestigious project of finding cost-effective and efficient thermal energy.

Strawberry kids have a field day

Chandigarh, December 23
Strawberry Fields celebrated its annual sports day on a bright winter afternoon on Sunday. Children in the age group 2-5 years put up a lively show which had five sequences apart from racing events and a march past.

PU Syndicate poll: 13 elected unopposed
Chandigarh, December 23
At the Panjab University Syndicate elections, which were held today, 13 out of the total 15 members were elected unopposed. Meanwhile, in a close contest GK Chatrath was shown door by Tarlok Bandhu after a tie-breaker in the Faculty of Laws.

Batchmates remember Jaspal Bhatti

The king of satire and spoof, Jaspal Bhatti, ex-PEC student, was remembered by his old batch mates and friends during the PEC's alumni meet recently. While more than 300 alumni of PEC University of Technology converged on their alma Mater, it was tribute to Jaspal Bhatti, which remained the major highlight of the event.

Blood donation camp
Aanchal International school, Sector 41, organised a one-day volunteer blood donation and awareness camp on the school premises on Sunday. Members of the staff and parents participated donated blood. The school was decorated with Christmas colours and children dressed as little Santa greeted the donors.

Delhi gang rape: Students, social organisations hold protest
Ambala, December 23
The students of SA Jain Girls College and members of some other organisations took out a protest march in Ambala City here today. They demanded justice for the 23-year-old girl rape victim of Delhi. They shouted slogans against the government for its inaction and failure to provide security to women.

Death penalty sought for accused
Fatehgarh Sahib, Dec 23
Hundreds of residents of Sirhind town led by the activists of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Club, Sirhind, today took out candle march against the Delhi gang rape. The protesters raised slogans demanding justice for the gang rape victim.

Govt schools shine in CGI science fair

Government schools excelled at the science fair organised at Continental Group of Institutes (CGI) Campus at Jalvehra as Government Senior Secondary School, Kalyan, DAV Public School, Patiala, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Rajpura, won the first, second and third prizes, respectively, in physics, biology and computer science and maths competitions.

To assist the district administration during Saheedi Jor Mela over 200 NSS volunteers of Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib, are participating in the 7-days camp. The camp was inaugurated by Dr Paramvir Singh, NSS coordinator, Punjabi University Patiala.

Woman chain snatcher arrested
Zirakpur, December 23
The Zirakpur police has arrested a woman in connection of a chain snatching. The police has also recovered a chain from her possession. As per information, the arrested woman was identified as Karnailo, a resident of Seetanwala, Patiala.

Woman dupes many of Rs 3 cr
Mohali, December 23
A 22-year-old woman, Shalini Kapoor, an immigration consultant here, has allegedly run away after defrauding several persons of about Rs 3 crore on the pretext of sending them abroad. Shalini is said to have run away, along with her boyfriend, after closing her office, World Class Enterprises Private Limited, at Phase 9 on December 9.

2 eve-teasing cases registered
Chandigarh, December 23
Two cases of eve-teasing were registered in the city yesterday. A snatching incident was also reported in Sector 40, here. Anil Kumar, a resident of Jhuggi No. 491, Block K, Colony No. 5, Chandigarh, eve-teased a girl at the ISBT-17. A case was registered against him at the Sector 17 Police Station. The accused was arrested and later released on bail.

Driver held on extortion charge
Chandigarh, December 23
Narinder Singh (35), a former driver of a businessman, Ajit Jain, was arrested for sending him a threat letter demanding extortion money of Rs 5 crore from the latter. The police said the accused had threatened to throw acid on Jain and his son if they failed to pay the money. Police officials said the driver, a native of Amritsar, was sacked by Jain a few months ago.

Gursharan wins golf tournament
Chandigarh, December 23
Gursharan Singh of Alberta (Canada) declared winner of the gross category carding a three-day tally of 153 on the final day of the Eighth Chandigarh Golfing Tour concluded on the par-72 greens of the Panchkula Golf Club here. Gursharan shared the best gross score in both first and third rounds. The overall individual nett trophy went to Canada’s Col Jaswant Singh Virk with 120 points.

Chandigarh, December 23
Skaters Jyoti, Shriya and Paavan secured top honors in the girls(U-16) category during the ongoing state roller skating championship being held, here today. In the Boys (U-14 to 16) category, Shubhanshu, Akash and Sajal attained top three places in the state roller skating championship.
