The Indian Oil Tanker Union, which had yesterday declared an indefinite strike for its demands, today ended its stir, as the IOC officials assured them to fulfill their demands soon. Paying heed to their demands, the IOC today reportedly transferred the TLF in charge Shambu Singh, against whom the union members had levelled allegation of misbehaviour.

The vice-president of the district Indian Oil Tanker Union Ashok Sareen said this morning they had a talk with the IOC chief terminal manager Ranjan Srivastva, who assured them to fulfill their demands.

"We have been given a written assurance by the IOC officials to fulfil our long-pending demands. We have been told by the officials that the TLF in charge Shambu has been transferred with the immediate effect," he added.

The tanker union had also been demanding for the past one year to pay sufficient rent to the tanker owners for carrying the fuel to the neighbhouring states. "Our tankers are covering more distance than we are being paid. We had requested the IOC to reimburse the amount of the past one year and now the officials have also agreed to fulfill this demand," he revealed.

New look for Punjab Police constables?
Modern ‘Beat Officers’ armed with American handcuffs, SWAT shoes
Varinder Singh
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 26
Is the Punjab Police constabulary on its way to don a modern, more dominating, westernised and "citizen-friendly" look?

The answer is in affirmative if the "Revitalised Beat System", launched by the Punjab Police in Jalandhar today to provide a complete makeover to constables, turns out to be a success.

Under the pilot project, police constables or "Beat Officers" have been provided with a new look, as they were armed with a "multi-purpose tactical belt", tactical mirror for inspection of vehicles, tactical baton, American hand-cuffs with automatic lock, LED torches, SWAT shoes and hand-held walkie-talkie sets with earphones.

“These officers would patrol the beats, interact with citizens and provide a sense of confidence to the general public. They would be entrusted with verifications and minor inquiries relating to their beat area,” said DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, who launched the "Revitalised Beat System" initiated by the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate here today. He said the system would be replicated in other parts of the state.

“Initially, the "Revitalised beat system" was being implemented in police stations - Division Nos 6 and 7. A total of 24 constables, mostly from the recent recruitment have been selected for the performance of duty as "Beat Officers” in 12 beats, six in each police station,” said Jalandhar Police Commissioner Gaurav Yadav.

Talking about other citizen-friendly measures being taken by the Punjab Police, Saini said the online system pertaining to the fixing of appointments for foreign nationals to visit foreigners registration office (FRO) located in the Commissionerate office will reduce the number of visits for foreign nationals and facilitate easier processing of paper work. “This has been devised on the pattern of appointments being given by passport offices to save the time of citizens. Since the personal presence of the foreign national is essential for registration work, the aim is to give a fixed time and date to the foreign national for the processing of paper work. This facility will be available on the web portal of the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate (http://www.jalandharpolice.gov.in)/,” he said.

The web portal was launched by Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on February 12 last year and offered a host of services and information.

Alleged rape victim tries to meet DGP
Nikhil Bhardwaj

Jalandhar, November 26
Before the arrival of the Punjab Director-General of Police (DGP), an alleged rape victim of Malsian village near Shahkot, along with her kin, was keen to meet the state police chief, but couldn't succeed in her attempt.

She wanted to apprise the DGP of the "dilly-dallying" attitude of the rural police in the registration of a case and the arrest of the alleged accused of Nakodar, "who had developed physical relations with her on the pretext of marrying her".

The incident occurred just a few minutes before the arrival of the DGP. As the district police team was stationed on the police lines road to welcome their chief, Raman Kaur (name changed) suddenly arrived and informed the police officials that she wanted to meet the DGP regarding her molestation case and delay in the registration of a case against the accused. Sensing trouble, the ADCP, headquarters, Navjot Singh Mahal, and SSP, rural, Yurinder Singh Hayer, reached the spot and pacified the woman.

The SSP reportedly assured the woman that her case would be looked into.

It may be recalled that on October 10, the woman had conducted a press conference in Jalandhar in which she had alleged that the rural police was not taking her complaint seriously. She had also filed a complaint to the SSP, who later marked an inquiry to the DSP, Shahkot. An attempt was made to contact the SSP on his phone, but he did not respond.

MC mulls shifting of taxi stands

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 26
The Municipal Corporation (MC) Jalandhar has plan to shift the taxi stands occupying service lanes illegally around BMC Chowk and Namdev Chowk to a regularised area under Lyallpur Khalsa College Railway Overbridge.

Mayor Sunil Jyoti visited the site today and checked the development of the area for the possible shift. While the tile work in most of the area is over, a 15-foot wide strip along Punjab State War Memorial is yet to be covered with concrete.

Jyoti discussed the matter with officials of the B&R department and tehbazari wing to also explore the possibility of having a separate area earmarked for cycle and scooter parking.

With bus stand just a few metres across, it is a viable space for taxis. Since the bus stand often falls short of parking space, this stretch of land can partly help solve the problem.

Commissioner Viney Bublani said the traffic police was also being roped in to seek its opinion in the matter. He said a meeting with the taxi stand owners was also being planned to know their point of view.

The shifting of the taxi stands from their current location will come as a major boon for the owners of showrooms, hotels, malls, banks, Guru Nanak Dev District Library and Virsa Vihar whose façade has been marred owing to a long row of parked taxis.

PAP throws open shooting range to public
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 26
In an effort to promote shooting in the state, the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) has opened doors of its shooting range for public.

This is for the first time that the PAP has introduced training for general public. Earlier, the shooting rage was exclusively used by the police officials and sports persons.

Additional Director General of Punjab Police (ADGP) GS Sahota, who is also Armed Battalion and Central Sports Officer, while talking to the Tribune said that interested civilians would be trained free of cost. This has been done to tap talent from the area and hone the skill of the budding shooters.

The ADGP said the training seekers have to pay nominal membership fee while the authorities would provide them arms and fixed quota of ammunition. To procure a majority of the ammunition to be used during the training period, it would solely be the responsibility of the trainees’.

Apart from PAP Jalandhar, there are four other government run shooting ranges across the state (Badal, NIS Patiala, Mohali and GNDU Amritsar). The Olympian Abhivan Bindra has his personal shooting range in Chhat village on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway near Zirakpur.

With the opening of the PAP shooting range for the general public, the ADGP hopes that the state could produce more shooters for the next Olympics and other International and national shooting championships.

Two students of Apeejay School Gurnoor Singh of Class VII and Namit Kapoor of Class VIII won the Bournvita Quiz contest at the local level.

The twosome walked with accolades from among 50 other teams that competed for the same event. They have their fingers crossed now for the semifinals to be held at Kolkata in January.

Son of an Income Tax Commissioner, Gurnoor has been an all-rounder from the very beginning. He had won a quiz contest organised by Vodafone in May this year. He has attained the rank of 124 in NSTSE and 179 in the International Olympiad earlier.

He has proven himself not just in academics, but also in dance competitions. He is taking coaching in classical dance from Allahabad University privately.

His mother Dr Jasmeet, Associate Professor of chemistry at Government College, Kapurthala, claims that even as it was all her son's effort, she too was trying to help him out by sparing maximum time for him.

"I ensure that he gets the best reading material, books that help prepare for competitive exams, quiz books and most relevant articles from the Internet. He is also regular with reading newspapers," she added.

Gurnoor gave his tip, "The best strategy is to work at least a year in advance. By the time it is summer holidays I am already through with my own class books. After that, I start working on books of the next class. At the start of this session, when other students of my class were buying Class VII books, I was instead buying those for class VIII."

Gurnoor aims to do engineering from an IIT. He wants to follow in his dad's footsteps and wants to join civil services.
