Another death at unmanned railway crossing
Shahkot, November 21
The deceased has been identified as Vijay Kumar, alias Sabi, a shopkeeper and a resident of Mulewal Arayian village near Shahkot. Senior railway officials from Ferozepur reached the spot and initiated the investigation. The accident occurred at 11.30 am. Sources said Vijay, riding an Indica car, did not notice the arriving machine while attempting to cross the unmanned railway crossing. The machine reportedly travelling at a good speed dragged the car to 250 metres away from the collision site, the sources added. Residents living in nearby areas reached the spot and started the rescue operation. Sources said the car was crushed badly and it proved difficult to pull him out. Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepur, Naresh Chand and Divisional Commercial Manager, Poonam Dudi, reached the spot. Both the officials evaded media queries. As the accident occurred at an unmanned railway crossing, the deceased’s relatives and others held the Railways responsible for the accident. When the mediapersons questioned the railway officials whether they would initiate any inquiry into the accident, the official evaded a direct reply and said they would apprise the higher authorities of the accident and would also take necessary step to prevent such accidents in future. The driver of the machine, Mukhwinder Singh of Amritsar, said, “I was driving at a normal speed. The car suddenly arrived. I applied emergency breaks and even blow the horn to alarm the car driver, but it was too late”. Gurmej Singh, in charge, Lohian Khas Government Railway Police station, said after conducting the preliminary investigation, it was found that the car driver was negligent and did not notice the train while crossing the unmanned crossing. A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence under Sections 279 and 304 A of IPC has been registered against the deceased at the Lohian Khas police station.

Marriage palaces want hotels to be taken under new policy
Jalandhar, November 21 Members of the Jalandhar Marriage Palace Owners Association, led by president Ranbir Tut, said even as there were some seven palaces which had adequate parking space and complied with the policy, there was not even a single hotel which fulfilled the parking norms. Coming down heavily against the hotel industry, secretary Prabhjot Singh Sidhu said it was sheer discrimination against them. “Unlike us who get 50 to 75 functions a year and have a seasonal business, the hoteliers get a regular business and have been spared to flout parking norms blatantly. If we are partially jamming the roads for some 50 to 75 days, they have been allowed to create problems all 365 days.” The palace owners said another culprit on this front was hospitals as they too don’t fulfil the required parking provisions. Even the DC office, civil hospital and most other government offices with high footfall are devoid of parking provisions, they said. The palace owners said they were ready to make requisite parking provisions, but they should be exempted from CLU charges on the land which they reserve for parking. They also demanded that the deadline of November 30 given to them be extended so that they are able to arrange for the CLU amount to be deposited. |
Aided teachers demand merger with govt schools
Jalandhar, November 21 Mohinder Bhagat, son of Chunni Lal Bhagat, met the delegation as the minister’s representative. The delegation submitted a demand letter addressed to the local Bodies Minister to Mohinder Bhagat and asked for the implementation of their long-pending demands. Their demands included grant of basic pay and DA as per the implementation of the Fifth Pay Commission rather than (aided school teachers were getting the HRA and MA) as per the recommendations of the Fourth Pay Commission, as was presently being done; demand of revised grade pay on par with government employees who were getting it from October 2011 and lifting the ban on recruitments of new employees on privately managed aided schools. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, state head Arvind Bains said aided schools had been battling with many problems for the past some time and the only solution to the problem was that they should be merged with government schools. Member Manish Aggrawal said the merger with the government would ensure that the government gets about 4,500 additional employees with an extra expenditure of only Rs 1,000 per employee. He also said the merger would ensure that the balance of provident funds (Rs 200 crore) lying in carious banks would shift to the government, giving the state government additional financial strength. The delegation demanded that the matter should be taken up with the Education Minister. Bhagat assured them that the issue would be taken up with the Education Minister and efforts would also be made for its inclusion in the upcoming Cabinet meeting. |
