Black Divali for thousands

Jalandhar, November 10
This Divali will be black for thousands of residents of the state. They will not be able to light up their houses and other premises on the festival of lights on Tuesday.

Thanks to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), which has failed to provide new connections in the state for the past six months due to lack of metres.

Over 40,000 residents of the state applied for new power connections on their premises located in various parts of the state since June, but PSPCL failed to provide any new connection, it is learnt.

A resident of Jalandhar said: “I applied for a new connection for my newly built house in July, but the same has not been provided to me till date. As a result, I will not be able to light up my house on Divali. I cannot even get temporary connection from my neighbour as it is not allowed by PSPCL.”

Forget about providing any new connection, PSPCL failed to even replace the burnt, damaged or stolen meters for the past six months for the same reason.

An electricity metre installed outside photographer Ramesh Gaba’s studio at Rose Park on the Gulab Devi Road here was stolen a few weeks ago. “I reported the matter to the police and applied with the Maqsoodan PSPCL office for installing a metre at my shop, but it has not been fixed so far,” Gaba said.

He said: “The power connection has been restored to his shop directly and he has been asked to pay an average bill till the installation of a new metre.”

Meanwhile, PSPCL CE (Metering) PK Chadha admitted that new connections could not be provided for the past several months as the metres had not been supplied to PSPCL.

However to a query, he said: “The supply of the metres has started recently and new connections have been provided to a few applicants. The same will be provided to other applicants turn by turn.”

In reply to a question, he admitted that most of the applicants would not be able to get new connection before Divali.

Jalandhar, November 10
The first state conference by the Spinal Cord Injury Association, Jalandhar, was held at the local Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall here today.

A one-of-a-kind conference for those affected with spinal cord injuries, the event saw 65 spinal cord injury-affected men and women from the state gather together on a single platform for the first time.

The total gathering included hundreds of people. The logo of the Spinal Cord Injury Association reads "Can’t Walk…let’s fly". What was touching was the zest and love for life of many who came on the occasion. People laid down on cots, moved around on wheelchairs and some who had not ventured out for years especially came to attend the event.

Parvinder Singh, Davinder Singh (Amritsar), Harpinder Singh Sanghera, Manmohan Singh Thakkar, Abhey Dogra, Manu Miglani, Pawel Pasla, among other association members who initiated the efforts for today’s conference were present on the occasion.

People with grave spinal injuries and other related impediments aired out their fears, doubts and queries to specialists from the Indian Spinal Injury Centre, Delhi, who specially came for the occasion.

Resource persons from the Indian Spinal Injury Centre, Delhi and Safdarjung Hospital - Dr Manoj Dabar, Rajiv Virat, Pragya and Divya Prashar and Varinder Vikram Singh interacted with various injury-affected people and satisfied their queries. Disability activist Amarjit Singh Anand was also present on the occasion. It was also the first time that the issue got such a wholehearted support from the political and administrative ranks.

The event was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti in the morning. He gave Rs 15,000 for the treatment of injury-affected Kapil Saini, who was assaulted and thrown into a well by assailants some years ago.

Chief Parliamentary Secretary KD Bhandari was the chief guest on the occasion. SAD district president Gurcharan Singh Channi and Mayor Sunil Jyoti presided over. Former chairman of the Improvement Trust Baljit Singh Neelamahal was also present on the occasion.

Channi said he would take up the issue of better facilities for the association with the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister.

On the occasion, the Chief Parliamentary Secretary handed over Rs 2 lakh from his state fund to the association. Mayor Sunil Jyoti and Gurcharan Singh Channi contributed Rs 11,000 each, and Baljit Singh Neelamahal provided special wheels chairs to four people.

Since the event was organised by the Spinal Cord Injury Association whose members are themselves victims, the special care with which visitors ought to have been treated was evident.

A ramp was created for visitors. The front rows, right next to the stage, were reserved for people on wheelchairs rather than placing seats on them as is done in usual functions (even those held for people with special needs). The specialists patiently listened to the queries from the people and answered them in sessions, which spanned hours. The fact that one of the resource persons himself addressed them on a wheelchair, made this event different and special than the usual seminars.

Parvinder Singh, president of the Spinal Cord Injury Association, said their ultimate aim was to bring back life into the lives of people who had lost all hopes.

Almost all political guests promised the association members that issues about the allocation of land to the association would be taken up seriously.
