DGP directs officers not to spare violators of traffic rules

Bengali tourist killed in mishap
Mussoorie, November 5
A tourist from West Bengal was killed while two others sustained serious injuries when they were hit by a Qualis near the entry gate of Mall Road here today. The deceased has been identified as Parvesh Chand Chakravarty (74). The injured are Krishan Chand Nautiyal (35) and Prem Singh (58).

DAV-PG College to organise inter-varsity sports competitions
Dehradun, November 5
DAV-PG College will shortly organise inter-university sports competitions in boxing, judo, shooting, women hockey and tennis. In a press conference held in the college premises, Principal Devender Bhasin said the college sports teams did exceedingly well in various sports competitions, which were held with different colleges of the state in the month of October.

Athletes from Mussoorie schools excelled in their respective events during the 66th District Athletics Championship that concluded at Doon School recently. Kartikeya Pratap Singh of St George’s College, Mussoorie, stood first in javelin throw and won a gold medal in the under-18 category.

DGP directs officers not to spare violators of traffic rules
* Wants action plan on school timings

Dehradun, November 5
Director General of Police (DGP) Satyavrat Bansal held a meeting with police officials at the SSP's office today to discuss ways to improve traffic management and steps to be taken to ensure the public follows traffic rules in the city.

The officials included Inspector General, Law & Order, Ram Singh Meena, Deputy Inspector General, Dehradun Range, Sanjay Gunjiyal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Neeru Garg, SP, Traffic, Ajay Joshi, SP, City, Kunwar Dileep Singh, SP, Rural, GS Dhyani and all circle officers and station house officers of the city.

The existing traffic plan was discussed. After extensive deliberations, the DGP directed the fellow officials to assimilate new points in their action plan to further streamline the traffic system in the city.

He issued instructions to take strict action in cases of drunken driving, triple riding, helmetless riding, overspeeding and stunt display on bikes.

He said the regulations related to no parking, one-way traffic and giving way to pedestrians on zebra lines must be followed strictly. He directed the police personnel associated with police stations and police posts to assist in regulating traffic during peak hours. He asked the officials to prepare an action plan for traffic management during the opening and closing time of schools.

After the DGP's meeting, Sanjay Gunjiyal held a separate meeting with the officials and directed them to start working on the new action plan immediately. He cautioned them, saying that those who failed to give results would be transferred from their positions.

Bengali tourist killed in mishap

Mussoorie, November 5
A tourist from West Bengal was killed while two others sustained serious injuries when they were hit by a Qualis near the entry gate of Mall Road here today. The deceased has been identified as Parvesh Chand Chakravarty (74). The injured are Krishan Chand Nautiyal (35) and Prem Singh (58).

According to the police, the accident took place in the evening when the driver of the vehicle, which was on its way to Mall Road from Picture Palace, lost control over it and hit three persons.

The victims were taken to St Mary’s Hospital, where the tourist from West Bengal who had arrived in the town just an hour ago succumbed to his injuries.

The condition of the other two is also stated to be critical.

BEGC celebrates 201th Group Day

The commencement of the 201th Group Day celebrations of Bengal Engineer Group and Centre (BEGC) was marked by a religious function at the historic Faujeshwar temple, where Bengal Sappers had first set foot in Roorkee in 1853, here today.

The religious function was followed by Sainik Sammelan, where Brig Digvijay Setia, Commandant, Bengal Engineer Group and Centre, addressed all Bengal Sappers of the centre and congratulated them on the day.

The outstanding sappers were awarded prizes for excellence in various fields like professional courses, sports and adventure.

Also, 148 soldiers and 12 civilians were felicitated for their devotion to duty.

The Commandants' Banner for 2011-12 was awarded to the No 2 Training Battalion for its outstanding overall performance.

In the evening, final matches in the Inter-Unit Hockey Championship were played.

Teams from all Bengal Sappers units participated in this event.

Show of skill at first aid mock drill

Mussoorie, November 5
A first aid mock drill exercise was organised under the aegis of the Red Cross Society branch, Chandigarh, and St John's Ambulance, Punjab, at Shaheed Sthal in Mussoorie today.

Around 80 lecturers from various parts of Punjab, who have been undergoing a training camp on the first aid techniques since November 3 at Youth Hostel, 7 kilometres from Mussoorie, took part in the mock drill.

The trainees demonstrated various manual carrying methods like human crutch, fore and aft carry, four-handed seat, firemans lift as part of training camp being conducted here.

A demo on how cardio-pulmonary-resuscitation is done and lifting the bodies on canvas stretcher and on improvised stretchers were also performed.

According to camp director KK Saini, the camp will continue till November 8 where through a series of lectures, the trainees will be educated about the origin of the Red Cross movement, its objectives, aims and scope of first-aid, dressing and bandage, methods of artificial respiration, burns and scalds, poison cases, injuries to bones and joints by the experts attending the camp.

In addition to this, the trainees will also be educated on the way to fight the social stigmas prevalent in the society namely, female foeticide, domestic violence, etc.

The administrator from the local administration Surya Mani, Dhanpat Rai from Bathinda, Vijay Kumar from Barnala, Sunil Dutt from Ferozepur, Joginder Kaur and Balwinder Singh from Hoshiarpur, Jagat Singh Mann from Ludhiana, Manjit Kaur from Moga, Ajay Pal Sidhu from Mohali, Jagat Singh Gami from Gujarat, Praveen Joshi, Vishwamitr Sushila Kumari and all resource persons were present on the occasion.

Meeting discusses preparations for wards’ delimitation

Chief Development Officer Sushil Kumar held a meeting with officials of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation and local bodies to discuss preparations for the delimitation of wards.

He directed officials of the DMC, the Nagar Palika and the Council, Vikasnagar and Mussoorie, to send their final proposals regarding the delimitation of wards in the next five days. He said since changes in the wards were imminent, the maps of newly allocated areas should be prepared.

Moroccan orchestra weaves a spell at Virasat

The gidda performance at Virasat 2012 enthralled the audience on Sunday night. The dance form from Punjab was energetic and at the same time it managed to creatively display feminine grace, elegance and flexibility. The gidda troupe has come to Virasat by the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala.

The second dance of the evening was ‘nati’ dance from Himachal Pradesh. The pristine beauty of Himachal found an eloquent expression in the languid and elegant movements that formed a part of the nati dance.

The third performance that brought another flavour to Virasat was kalbelia, which is one of the most sensuous dance forms of Rajasthan, performed by a tribe of the same name. The kalbelia dance, performed to celebrate joyful moments, is an integral part of Rajasthani culture.

The fourth performance was that of The Orchestra Chabab Al Andalouss de Rabat, from Morocco. Orchestre Chabab Al Andalous, which means Andalusian youth orchestra, is an ensemble of Moroccan traditional music with its root in the old Spanish peninsula known as Andalusia. The troupe included 11 members.

The fifth presentation of the evening was a music concert by Piyush Mishra, a film and theatre actor, music director, lyricist, singer, scriptwriter.

The evening started with Piyush Mishra singing and playing harmonium. He sang compositions like ‘Ek bagal mein chand hoga’ from the film Gangs of Wasseypur.

The Second Brother SE Coffey Memorial Tennis Tournament played at St. Jospeh's Academy concluded here today. The results of the finals are as follows: Under the 10 boys category, Avyukt Kocchar of Riverdale beat Yash Panthri of SJA 7-5.

Under the 12 boys category, Drona Valiya of Doon International beat Aryaman Shukla of Brightlands 5-3.

Under the 14 boys category, Dhruv Sabharwal of SJA got a walkover and was adjudged the winner.

Under the 18 boys category, Ravi Kumar of Vidya Mandir, Haridwar, was adjudged the winner.

Under the 16 girls category, Ashna Agarwal of Welham Girls School beat Sanjam Dhariwal of Scholar Homes 6-2.

Under the 18 girls category, Sachi Belwal of SJA beat Ashna Agrawal (Welham Girls) 6-1.

Under the 19 team event, St Joseph's Academy team comprising Dhruv Sabharwal and Atishay Jain beat Aditya Pratap and Abhinav Changmai of Kashia School in the finals by 2-1.

There were more than 100 participants from 17 different schools, including SJA, DIS, CJM, Ann Merry, Kasiga etc, who participated in the tournament and made it a success. Bro A.J. George, Principal of SJA, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Challenge Basketball Tournament

The 1st All-India Asian Challenge Basketball Tournament 2012 commenced in The Asian School  here today. The tournament is affiliated to the Basketball Federation of India and is being conducted on a league-cum-knock out format.

This four-day basketball tournament was declared open by Principal A K Das.

The teams competing in the Asian Challenge Basketball Tournament are Jaswant Modern School, Doon International School, Hilton School, Scholars' Home, Selaqui International School and The Asian School.

The first day of the tournament witnessed a keenly contested match between Selaqui International School and Doon International School.

The latter won by a margin 51-16.

The second match was played between Jaswant Modern School and Hilton School. This was a keenly fought match. Hilton won by 34-16.

The other dignitaries present were secretary of the Uttarakhand Basketball Association Vinod Vachhani, Sardarni Kanwaljeet Kaur, chairperson,

The Asian School, director Gaganjot Singh, vice-principal Anant V. D. Thapliyal, Middle School co-ordinator Mukesh Nangia and Farah S.headmistress, coaches from participating schools and parents.

DAV-PG College to organise inter-varsity sports competitions

DAV-PG College will shortly organise inter-university sports competitions in boxing, judo, shooting, women hockey and tennis. In a press conference held in the college premises, Principal Devender Bhasin said the college sports teams did exceedingly well in various sports competitions, which were held with different colleges of the state in the month of October.

In these competitions, the college teams registered victory in crosscountry race, badminton, basketball, cricket, baseball, handball, volleyball and boxing. The teams also bagged the second position in chess, football and kabaddi .

Satyavrat Tyagi, Sports Secretary, said the college would also hold memorial sports competitions in memory of faculty members, coach of basketball RK Shukla and hockey coach PN Dhasmana, who passed away. He said the college would soon have a badminton hall, built with the aid of MP fund.

Bhasin said the college was providing all the sports-related facilities to its students at a nominal fee.

Dehradun college, US Nagar win volleyball titles

Maharana Partap Sports College, Dehradun, defeated Haridwar in the boys section of the sub-junior state level volleyball tournament that concluded at the Scholars Academy at Roorkee today.

In the girls section, the Udham Singh Nagar team defeated the Almora team to win the title.

In the boys’ final match, Maharana Partap Sports College defeated Haridwar 25-16, 24-26, 25-23 in a close fight. In the girls’ final match, Udham Singh Nagar beat Almora 25-19, 18-25 and 17-15.

Devpal Singh Rana, block pramukh of Nanuta, who was the chief guest, gave away prizes and medals to the winners, runners-up and participants. Arun Kumar Sood, senior vice-president of the Uttarakhand Volleyball Association, announced that the state teams selected during the tournament would play in the national sub-junior volleyball to be held at Karimnagar in Andhara Pradesh from November 19 to 25.

Athletes from Mussoorie schools excelled in their respective events during the 66th District Athletics Championship that concluded at Doon School recently. Kartikeya Pratap Singh of St George’s College, Mussoorie, stood first in javelin throw and won a gold medal in the under-18 category.

Kumar Avi Tandon bagged the first position in the shot put in the same category and Nikhil Goyal of St George's stood first in long jump.

In the under-14 category, Siddanth Ale of St George’s College won a gold medal in shot put. In the under-18 category, Suyash Nautiyal of Wynberg-Allen, Mussoorie, won a bronze medal in long jump. St George's College, Mussoorie, was declared the champion in the boys' (under-18) category. — OC
