An associate professor in the department of chemistry in DAV (PG) College, Dehradun, Dr Prashant Singh has been a man of commitment both to his profession and to the cause of popularisation of science. Today when the nation is facing a gradual shift of youngsters from the science subjects, Dr Prashant has been encouraging the students to take up science.

The Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) yesterday sealed 30 illegal flats at Palm City Apartments, Dehrakhas. The flats have not been constructed according to the maps approved by the MDDA.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, Rising Star scored 83 runs losing all its wickets in the process in just 23.1 overs. Rahul scored the highest runs (26) for Rising Star.

Muslims offer prayers on Id-ul-Zuha

Id-ul-Zuha was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in the state today. Thousand of Muslims gathered at mosques and idgahs to offer prayers.

In Dehradun, Governor Aziz Qureshi joined the namazis at the EC Road mosque in offering prayers. Qureshi exchanged pleasantries with the gathering, particularly with the children. Further, at the Dehradun’s Govindgarh idgah, more than 10,000 devotees offered special morning prayers. The prayers were also held at the Dhamawala, Dharamapur, EC Road, Karanpur, Morewala, Subasnagar and Lakhibagh mosques and at the Ajabpurkalan and Kisan Nagar madarassas as well. The celebrations also took place in the Kumaon region and other parts of the Garhwal hills.

Muslims sacrificed goats and distributed meat among relatives, friends and the poor. Devotees also thronged the markets to buy new clothes, gifts and sweets.

Meanwhile, the administration had made elaborate arrangements for the festivals. Traffic was diverted from roads leading to prominent mosques. The traffic on the Chakrata road and the Dehradun-Delhi highway was diverted to other routes to facilitate the movement of the devotees.

Haridwar: Id-Ul-Juha was celebrated with gaiety and fervour across Haridwar today.

Muslim gathered at the Idgaah ground in Jwalapur in the morning to offer prayers. Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Gobind Singh Kunjwal also visited the idgah.

Kunjwal that India was a country of diversity where followers of all sects and religions lived with harmony and peace.

Devotees across the district attended the morning prayers at various mosques of the city. At Jama Masjid in Jwalapur, hundreds attended the morning namaaz and embraced each other. Later, the ritual of sacrificing goat was performed followed by ritual of meat distribution among relatives and poor.

Arrangements were made by the district administration at all the mosques situated in Jwalapur, BHEL and Bahadrabad.

Haridwar MLA Harish Rawat wished the people on the occasion of Eid.

Circle Officer Shah Jahan Khan said security arrangements were made to ensure no untoward incident occurred.

Statehood fighters led by JP Pandey paid a visit to the BHEL-situated mosque and greeted Muslims on the occasion. City Congress chief OP Chauhan said Muslims host Divali milan functions on regular basis while Hindus organise iftaar parties during the month of Ramzaan and pay visit to idgahs.

An associate professor in the department of chemistry in DAV (PG) College, Dehradun, Dr Prashant Singh has been a man of commitment both to his profession and to the cause of popularisation of science. Today when the nation is facing a gradual shift of youngsters from the science subjects, Dr Prashant has been encouraging the students to take up science.

Dr Prashant Singh has visited Hong Kong, South Korea, Italy, Japan, USA, Singapore, Austria and Nepal for academic and research purposes.

As the Dehradun District Coordinator of the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology, Dr Prashant has been contributing significantly to the popularisation of science in the region.

A PhD in chemistry from Roorkee University with a first class academic career, Dr Prashant, still in his youth, has been either a convener or a member of the organising committee in more than 20 science popularisation workshops.

42-year-old Dr Prashant’s 32 research papers have been published in international journals in the past five years. He has also presented nine papers in the international conferences. He has been a life member of several prestigious organisations. He is life member of the Indian Science Congress Association, Indian Society of Analytical Scientists (Delhi Chapter), Indian Association of Chemistry Teachers and Asia Pacific Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering Society (CBEES), Thailand (Applied).

Dr Prashant has to his credit a long list of awards. In 2006, he was honoured by the State Level Swami Vivekananda NSS Award presented by the Department of Higher Education, Uttarakhand.

In 2007, he was presented with the National Level Indira Gandhi NSS Award instituted by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

In October 2008, the International Level Commonwealth Youth Silver Award was given to him by the Commonwealth Youth Programme’s Asia Center. Further, the Rashtriya Yuva Vaigyanik Puraskar- 2010 for science communication and popularisation and a Commendation Certificate-2011 for sustainable tree plantation in the state had been bestowed on him by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, New Delhi.

30 illegal flats sealed

Dehradun, October 27
The Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) yesterday sealed 30 illegal flats at Palm City Apartments, Dehrakhas. The flats have not been constructed according to the maps approved by the MDDA.

Although the builders had moved the High Court, the court, after examining the case, directed the MDDA to seal the flats. Besides this, one floor in a house at Race Course was also sealed. — TNS

Eminent Garhwali singer Gajendar Rana mesmerises audience

Mussoorie, October 27
The month-long autumn fair concluded with a sterling performance by eminent Garhwali singer Gajendar Rana and a recitation by poets from around the country in Mussoorie today.

To begin with, the poets from around the country gathered at shagun wedding point under the aegis of Narayani Sahitya Academy and recited their poems, which were much appreciated by all. The programme was inaugurated by MLA, Mussoorie, Ganesh Joshi, by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

The eminent poets, Naresh Naaz, Chandramani Brahmdutt, Luxmi Bhatt, Ratan Singh Jaunsari, Pushpa Singh, Vidhya Singh, Sunil Hapuria, Manoj Kumar and Sudhir Gairola recited their poems on various topics, namely the current political and social condition prevalent in the country. The poets also highlighted the problems being faced by the poor and made sarcastic comments on politicians, which were appreciated by the gathered audience. Kushal Singh Rana and others were present on the occasion.

Later, eminent singer from the state Gajendar Rana enthralled the audience with his melodious voice. The audience swayed on the foot-tapping numbers such as 'Babbli Teru Mobile' sung by Gajendar Rana and his team.

Gajendar Rana presented several songs in other local dialects of the region.

Yesterday, Preetam Bhartwan and Meena Rana enthralled the audience through their melodious voices which encoutaged the audience to dance and sing along with the singers.

A medical camp was organised by Hans Foundation, where its director Mata Mangla and Bholeyji Maharaj presented a cheque of Rs 2 Lakh to the needy families.

Wheelchairs and medicines were distributed to the needy persons on the occasion. It is worth mentioning that the autumn fair this year was held without any support from the state.

Dermatologists discuss skin diseases

With focus on clinical dermatology, skin specialists from across Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh today shared their knowledge on various aspects of skin diseases afflicting people at the 30th CUTICON annual conference hosted by the Dehradun Chapter of The Indian Association of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology (IADVL), Uttarakhand.

At total of 160 delegates participated in the conference in which various skin diseases such as eczema, urticaria, vitiligo and psoriasis were discussed.

While welcoming the delegates, Dr BS Judge, organising chairman of the conference, said the expertise of a doctor could play a big role in detecting a skin infection without having to resort to diagnostic tests.

“A clinical dermatologist can save a patient from the stress of going through diagnostic tests only by a careful study of the condition of the patient’s skin,” said Judge.

Later discussions were held on psoriasis, which is a common skin condition that causes redness and irritation. “Most people with psoriasis have thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches. It can be exacerbated due to improper food habits and lifestyle,” said Dr Tarun Mittal from Dehradun.

The conference was packed with lecturers in which top doctors from the prestigious medical institutions discussed various aspects of important skin diseases. Postgraduate students from medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand also presented research papers.

A separate district dermatology session for presenting any interesting case would be held tomorrow.

Shalini School, Beverly Hills, Dehradun, celebrated its founder’s day today. In his address to the students, Uttarakhand Food and Civil Supplies Minister Pritam Singh stressed about the importance of cultivating virtues in the students. He said school played an important role in polishing the personality of children. He also exhorted children to undertake their studies with all dedication and commitment. He awarded merit certificates to students.

School Principal Sumita Srivastava presented the annual report, highlighting the school’s achievements in the past one year.

Earlier, the event started with a welcome song and floral tributes to a educationist and founder-Principal of the school, the late K. Srivastava. It followed with lighting of the inaugural lamp. The dazzling stars of kindergarten left everyone spellbound with their foot-tapping dance ‘Foot it.’ The audience was also given a glimpse into the world of fairy tales through an entertaining musical presentation, ‘Cinderella,’ by the vibrant children of the junior section. It won the appreciation of the parents. Students enlivened the hearts of people with the English choir. The much-awaited play ‘Chanakya’ was enacted by children with great zeal.

Founder-Director L K Srivastava, technical programme director of U S Environmental Protection Agency, North Carolina, Ravi K. Srivastava, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Nagpur varsity's VC meets Governor

The Vice-Chancellor of Sanskrit University, Nagpur, Prof Pankaj Chande, and Prof Mahavir Agarwal recently met Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi in view of the pending selection for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Sanskrit University.

Out of the five contenders for the post of VC, Prof Pankaj Chande and Mahavir Agarwal met the Governor for an interaction.

“An utmost secrecy was maintained for the interaction.

Earlier, we were given separate dates for the selection extending till November 25. But now with today’s interaction, it is not certain if more interviews would be held,” said Agarwal. Sources said both Chande and Agarwal were being considered strong candidates for the post.

The other elected office-bearers are: general secretary— Deepak Joshi; vice-president Satish Chander Sati; treasurer— Manoj Haldiya; joint secretary— Mamata Arya; auditor — Kamal Kumar; and secretary publicity— Anil Thapliyal. The members of the working committee are Yukta Mittal, Anil Prakash Uniyal, Sandeep Kumar and Durga Prasad Chandola. The federation is affiliated to the State Secretariat Employees Union. — TNS

Electing to bat after winning the toss, Rising Star scored 83 runs losing all its wickets in the process in just 23.1 overs. Rahul scored the highest runs (26) for Rising Star. As of Uttarakhand Police bowlers, Anoop Chandola and Dhanraj took 4 and 3 wickets, respectively.

Batting next, Uttarakhand Police easily achieved the 84-run victory target losing just 1 wicket in the process. For Uttarakhand Polilce, Harshvardhan scored the highest runs (41) followed by Ashish Joshi who scored 27 runs.
