Officer’s kin dupes traders
Jammu, June 21 Over six cases of forgery, cheating and theft have been registered against the woman at various city police stations. The woman is accused of leaving the shops without making payments for the purchases made. “She used to arrive at the malls in a Gypsy, escorted by personal security officers. She would produce credit cards to make payments for the purchases but once these were rejected, she used to assure the mall owner of bringing the money from the nearest ATM. She would leave the mall with the goods and never return,” claimed a trader. On allowing her to leave with the goods, he said: “No one could expect such a high-profile woman to indulge in trivial thefts.” She had reportedly stolen material worth thousands from City Walk Showroom and Apple Tree in Gandhi Nagar and Petals in Shastri Nagar. Besides, she also managed to steal items from City Square Mall and a case had been registered at the Nawabad police station. Sources said the police had taken up the matter with the authorities of the armed force concerned. “We have asked the authorities to make the woman appear before the police,” said sources. What is kleptomania
People from well-off families who get involved in such acts suffer from a psychic disorder called kleptomania. “It is an irresistible urge to steal articles mostly of trivial values. Such people also regret of their deeds later. It is not exactly their fault, they are patients,” says Dr Mannu Arora, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College, Jammu. It is a curable disorder and behavioural therapy and medications are used to cure it. |

Coalition committed to empowering panchayats: Sadhotra
Jammu, June 21 Sadhotra was addressing a public meeting after laying the foundation stone of a panchayat ghar at Sum. The facility is being constructed at the cost of Rs 20 lakh. Sadhotra said during the 2008 Assembly elections, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had promised the people of the state that they would hold panchayat elections and strengthen the Panchayati Raj institutions in the state. He said the successful conduct of the panchayat elections had frustrated the PDP and the BJP and both were indulging in propaganda politics, claiming that these institutions had not been empowered. These parties were enemies of the basic democratic bodies and did not want to see a strong panchayati system in the state, he added. He further said the basic idea of having Panchayati Raj institutions was to involve more and more people in the speedy development of the state. The J&K Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 was the best in the country, he asserted. Sadhotra expressed gratitude to Krishan Lal for donating land free of cost for the panchayat ghar. He hoped that the panchayat ghar would become a symbol of perfect “lok raj” in the panchayat. Sarpanch Bishan Dass also spoke. |

Safety prime concern for return, say Pandits
Jammu, June 21 In a cabinet meeting held on yesterday, a proposal was forwarded to the Centre that includes enhancing the relief package from the present Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 20 lakh for construction of houses of those migrants returning to the Valley. The state government also recommended increasing the monthly cash assistance to Pandits from the present Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. Mohan Lal, a relief beneficiary, sitting on a dharna at Jagti, told The Tribune, “Nothing can be better than going back to our homes. We too want our homes back but money is not the only criterion and we need security assurance while returning there.” Sunil Raina, an unemployed youth and a resident of Jagti township, said, “The government’s decision to enhance the relief cash and the incentive for our return is a welcome step. But what if after sending us back to the valley, we do not feel safe there anymore.” “They have not mentioned the criteria under which Rs 20 lakh rupees will be given to the people. Also the safety aspect is not mentioned anywhere which should have been taken as a prime concern,” he added. HL Chatta, a Kashmiri Pandit leader and member of their apex advisory committee, while talking to The Tribune said, “We welcome the step and request the Minister for Revenue and Relief, Raman Bhalla to take up the matter with the Central government so that the people may soon benefit from it. Now we will invite all the organisations of Kashmiri Pandits and ask for the solution as how we can safely return to the Valley.” “Our main concern is relief, return and jobs for our youth. We will meet the concerned minister and talk about the safety measures being taken up by them,” Chatta added.

He stated that the special status granted under the Article had caused harm not only to the national interest but also to the people of the state as they had been denied their democratic and other rights. uncertainty dogs women football Vikas Sharma Tribune News Service
Jammu, June 21 “The Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA) is taking keen interest in promoting the game among men by conducting various tournaments while hosting premier football championships like Santosh Trophy, Federation Cup. But as far as women football is concerned, the authorities are least interested in holding even coaching camps not to talk of conducting tournaments,” said one woman footballer. “Despite being such a popular sport in the state, especially in the Valley, the JKFA has not taken any serious initiative to revive it,” said another woman footballer. When Santosh Trophy was hosted by J&K in 2008, it gave them a ray of hope that the JKFA will do something to bolster the standard of women football but it never happened, she added. According to sources, a continuous blame game between the J&K State Sports Council and JKFA has been the major cause behind the pathetic condition of women football. They both keep blaming each other for pushing women football into such a mess. JKFA President, Zameer Ahmad Thakur, while talking to The Tribune expressed concern over the grim scenario. “There is no doubt that the women football is in dire straits in J&K but we are now doing our level best to improve the situation for better,” Thakur said. Thakur said the J&K State Sports Council recently organised a coaching camp for women which was a welcome sign. “After the completion of upcoming Police Martyrs Football Tournament, JKFA plans to approach JKP for promoting women football in the Valley,” he maintained. “In fact, we are not enjoying much support from J&K State Sports Council because the JKFA has not been able to run its activities in a smooth manner due to paucity of funds,” he claimed.
