Traders writhe under power pangs
Jammu, June 3 Hotel and restaurant owners said the number of customers had witnessed a sharp decline following frequent and long unscheduled power cuts. The excessive use of diesel gensets had also burnt a hole in their pockets because of higher costs. “Our traders have been suffering huge losses due to the unscheduled power cuts. We can bear the scheduled cuts but frequent and long unscheduled power curtailments have badly affected the business. There is a strong resentment among the traders against the Power Department which comes under the portfolio of the Chief Minister,” Yashpal Gupta, president, Association Chamber of Traders Federation, told The Tribune. He said frequent power cuts had become a permanent feature in the city. Traders were the worst sufferers as they had been bearing scorching heat. The power supply was unpredictable and generally went off when they (traders) were dealing with customers, he regretted. “The entire region has expressed its concern but the government has turned a mute spectator. The Chief Minister should clarify why the people are left to reel under the scorching heat,” he said, adding that: “The people have been showing their resentment in a democratic manner and if the government doesn’t take corrective step, it may force them to adopt the path of agitation.” Ashish Kumar, an ice cream parlour owner in the Muthi area, said: “There are around 4 to 6 hours of scheduled power cut daily. Several times there are power trips which sometimes last for half-an-hour to an hour. The authorities continue to impose scheduled and unscheduled power cuts and it has badly affected our business.” Official sources said the power requirement of the entire Jammu and Kashmir was 2,300 MW but the state had a shortfall of 850 MW to 900 MW as against the availability of about 1,500 MW of electricity. The Jammu region was being supplied only 600 MW to 650 MW and the shortfall was being met by enforcing 8 to 12 hours curtailments in the unmetered areas. The remaining power shortage was being covered by enforcing power cuts even in the metered areas. Inderjeet Khajuria, president, Jammu Hoteliers Association, said: “The number of customers has declined by 20 per cent to 25 per cent. Either the hoteliers don’t have booking or customers who have hired AC rooms don’t pay the fixed amount. If a customer reserves an AC room for Rs 1,000 and if he doesn’t get that facility, he will either leave the room or pay half the amount.” He added that the government should come to the rescue of hoteliers keeping in view the tourist season and the Amarnath Yatra commencing from June 25. |

Tech snag leaves BSNL services crippled for 15 hrs
Rajouri, June 3 “I operate my complete business through phone. But, due to this network failure, I am not able to make a a single call and my business is getting affected,” Ramesh, a businessman, said. “If the services of BSNL will continue to remain like this, then I have no other option than to go for any other private telecom service providers, as they still provide better services in border areas as compared to BSNL,” he said. RD Parmar, Telecom, District Engineer (Rajouri and Poonch), said, “Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) brokedown and was stolen by unknown persons in Nowshera, due to which people faced some problem in connectivity.” However, he said, “I have informed senior officers of the department in Jammu about the issue and department is will lodge an FIR against the miscreants.” I had informed seniors but owing to unavailability of technicians on a particular place had caused delay in fxing the problem, he said. |

wherein he has instructed me to ensure the smooth functioning of the JKCA office premises at
Bhatindi.” “He (Dr Abdullah) has also directed that the JKCA office will not be closed at any cost and no one will be allowed to issue such orders except the authorities concerned, which have a direct bearing on the effective functioning of the office,”

Beautification plan for Sidhra-Narwal highway
Jammu, June 3 According to officials, they have submitted a plan before the district administration and are awaiting their nod for the project. If approved, the work is likely to start in the coming months. Officials said the road beautification project would also make the highway a tourist attraction and boost the local economy. The highway passes though the lower Shivaliks and has some of the highest points overlooking Jammu city. There is Mohmaya temple, which is also one of the presiding deities of the city. The highway beautification is part of the project under which farmers are being encouraged to plant flowers along the Jammu-Pathankote highway. As there is no farmland along the Narwal-Sidhra stretch, only medicinal plants will be planted. The plan was announced by Minister for Revenue and Relief Raman Bhalla a few months ago and a detailed survey was conducted for implementing the project. After the dumping of garbage was banned in the Tawi, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has been dumping the garbage in the forest areas on the outskirts of the city, which had become a threat to the local ecology. “Heaps of garbage along the national highway between Narwal bypass and Sidhra and in the area falling along Manda Park to Nagrota corroborate the indiscriminate dumping of trash by the civic body. There is a need to develop the area for tourism,” said Anil Sharma, a local resident. During late night hours or early in the morning, the garbage-laden trucks of the JMC and some private operators stealthily dump the waste. |
