Private schools hog limelight
Malvika Sharma
Jammu, May 26 Oriental Academy, Jammu, was the talk of the town as the school boasted of 58 distinction holders, a record in the own history of the school. With a total of 111 students appearing for the examinations from Oriental Academy, the pass percentage was 100 per cent with 11 top rankers, the highest among any other school in Jammu. While four students bagged four positions (4th, 6th, 7th and 10th rank) in the top ten ranks, the others were well within the top 20 bracket. “We are thorough with our students from the very beginning and there is no let up in the rigorous academic grilling of all the students. We aim at pulling up even the average student to the rank of a topper. The sky’s the limit for our students and we hope to inspire many more in the coming years,” commented Vivek Chauhan, manager, Oriental Academy. GS Charak, Principal, Dogra High School, congratulated Vivek Gupta, 2nd ranker in this year result, and summarised the success of the students as a mix of hard work by students and teachers. “Every good teacher always aims at showing the right direction to his students. It is a result of this constant hard work that students feel grateful to their teachers for good results,” said Charak. Another city-based schools performing well is Scared Heart School, Pinther, which has five toppers in the top 20 rankers. A school situated far from the city in a small township of Pinther has surprised the locals who appreciated the effort put in by the school in helping their children realise their own potential. The other lesser-known schools, such as Holy Cross Convent, RS Pura, with four toppers and the coveted first ranker Russell Khajuria; Fatima Convent Bishnah, Christ Convent, Poonch, with four toppers, Brahmarishi Bawra SVP School, Udhampur, with four toppers and other schools from areas such as Pulowra, Nowshera, Hiranagar (Infant Jesus School with 4 positions) gave a good performance in the board examination. This year’s state board results have produced various new heroes in terms of educational institutes who have given a better performance in comparison to other well-advertised schools, in turn breaking the monotony of city students performing better than their counterparts studying on the outskirts of the region. |

Panchayat members want more teeth
Jammu, May 26 The agitating panchayat members have been pressing for the implementation of the three-tier Panchayti Raj System in the state for a long time. They have also demanded that like other parts of the country, 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution should be extended to Jammu and Kashmir to empower the Panchayat Raj Institutions. They warned against imposing outsiders on the Panchayati Raj Institutions and demanded only members from Panches and Sarpanches should be elected as heads of the Block Development or District Development Committees. They have also demanded that four seats of Legislative Council reserved for the Panchayats should be filled from within the elected members the Panchayats. They also demanded that like MLA and MLCs, Panches and Sarpanches should also be provided with a protocol because they are also public representatives. Further more, they have demanded salaries on a par with the MLAs and MLCs. The demand for constituting Panchayati Adalat Committees at the earliest was also raised by the agitating members. Prominent among those who addressed the agitators included Anil Sharma, Kulbushan Khajuria, Madan Lal Sharma, Mohammad Aslam Choudhary, Raghunath Khajuria, Vijay Saini, Bishan Dass Bhagat, Munshi Khan, Naresh Choudhary, Goutam Singh Bajwa, Sham Lal, Pawan Raina, Mohammad Sadiq, Azhar Ali, Shashi Sharma, Balbir Singh and, Goutam Singh. Interlocutors’ remarks on PoK refugees welcomed
Jammu, May 26 Addressing newspersons here today, Rajiv Chuni, Chairman, SOS International, said the report by the interlocutors for Jammu and Kashmir, headed by Dileep Padgaonkar, had rightly vindicated the stand of the PoK refugees that they were being discriminated against by the successive governments. He said the interlocutors’ observation that the PoK refugees’ entitlements were nowhere on a par with the other migrant communities was a big question mark over the working of the NC-Congress coalition government in the state. He said: “The government has been overlooking our voice, our people have made many sacrifices but the authorities concerned never pay any heed to our unending dilemmas”. He said they were not expecting much from the report by the interlocutors as it was only recommendatory in nature and not binding on the government. “At a meeting with the PoK refugees, immediately after his taking over as Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah had promised to constitute an apex committee to solve their problems, but even after more than three years this apex committee is no where in sight”. He warned they would launch a nationwide campaign to expose the ineffective government through the media besides holding rallies, dharnas, etc. |

Only one food analyser available to test food
samples
Jammu, May 26 Sources said this has not only increased the workload on the laboratory at the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), but also slowed down the process to take legal action against people involved in adulteration of food.
The Public Analyser also has to test the samples brought from other districts of the region, making testing process very static, which also gives enough time to the suspects to jump law. It is pertinent to mention here that JMC launches routine checking drives and much publicity is given to such campaigns, but on the ground, not much has been done to eradicate the menace of adulteration from the city, because it takes months before the results of the sample testing are out. There are 71 wards of the corporation spread over 112 sq km in Jammu city and its newly developed colonies, which came up after 1990. The Health wing of the corporation has the responsibility to look after ward no.1 to 48 while the remaining wards are looked after by the legal meteorology department. Health Officer Vinod Sharma said: “We will have our own lab soon and a proposal has been put forth for the same. But, we are making efforts to establish the lab on a priority basis”. He said the corporation was facing certain problems but small-time food tests are conducted by the Health Wing of the corporation. It is pertinent to mention here that in the past
two decades there has been a rapid expansion of the city and along with it a large number of shops have come up in different areas. Adulteration is mainly found in milk, sweets, meat products, processed food and eatables served at hotels and restaurants where hygienic conditions are sometimes appalling, which directly affect the lives of the common man. |

Contractual coaches resent
delay
Jammu, May 26 According to sources, a total of 11 persons, including nine coaches and two instructors, were engaged on a contractual basis by the Sports Council in different disciplines with an objective to overcome the dire shortage of experts. They include Onkar Singh Gill (volleyball), Jagjit Singh (hockey), Shakti Gupta (judo), Dalwinder Singh (hockey), Rachna Jamwal (fencing), Vikas Magotra (swimming), Javaid Ahmed Sofi (football), Muneer Aalam Mir (volleyball), Rubia Jan (netball trainer) and Mohammad Ashraf Parray (handball instructor). The sources added that recruitment of more coaches for different disciplines was also decided at the meeting. “We simply fail to understand when the Standing Committee meeting has announced to engage us on a permanent basis then why there is an inordinate delay by the J&K State Sports Council in implementing it,” said one of the contractual coaches on the condition of anonymity. “In fact, the authorities at the helm of affairs have ditched us and playing a cruel joke with our future by delaying the process,” opined another instructor. “Despite getting offers from outside the state to impart coaching to sports persons we are more interested in grooming our own budding sports talents,” said another instructor. “Everyone of us went from pillar to post to put forth our case but in vain as the authorities are the least bothered and we are still struggling to get our genuine right,” he quipped. Meanwhile, the Minister for Youth Services and Sports, while talking to The Tribune, said the file regarding the regularisation of contractual coaches/instructors would be forwarded to the Finance Department soon for its approval. “In fact, the shifting of Darbar from Jammu to Srinagar has delayed the whole process of forwarding the file but I shall definitely monitor its progress,” said the minister. “The state government is committed to providing adequate infrastructure to the sports persons and for that recruitment of expert coaches in multi-disciplines is imperative,” he added. |
