Voice of dissent gets louder in Cong
The party announces a list of candidates for 65 wards, rebels demand its review Manmeet Singh Gill/GS Paul Tribune News Service
Amritsar, May 25 Son of former Social Welfare Minister Pundit Fakir Chand Sharma, Minna said he would support the party candidate, but only after expressing his grievances. He is presently a councillor from Ward number 24. As Minna tried to confirm his solidarity with the party, district secretary Sanjay Seth, a rebel, said that they would field independent candidates from all the 65 wards in the city. Minna and Seth were present in the same room while a press conference was going on. Seth said, "We would field candidates from all the wards which would surely hit the prospects of official party candidates." He said either the party should review the list of candidates or else it should face competition from own workers. In a different press conference, Congress leaders from Ward number 22 complained that the party has ignored deserving candidates by announcing Naresh Saini as official candidate. Leaders, including former NSUI coordinator Gautam Majitha, General Secretary Ashwani Sunny, Narinder Bareja, Vineet Mahajan and Manik Bajaj, said the party should review its list of candidates. They said if the list is not reviewed, they may field someone among themselves as an independent candidate. The Congress declared the list of candidates for the Amritsar MC polls on Thursday. Congress observer for MC polls KP Rana said every aspect was taken into consideration while finalising the list. Two Congress workers - Mahesh Khanna and Vijay Bhalla - have been included in the list even as they opposed the appointment of veteran leaders like Jugal Kishore Sharma and Prof Darbari Lal in the screening committee. Mahesh has been selected as Congress contender from Ward No 46 and Vijay Bhalla from Ward No 53. Reacting over the candidature, Pardeep Saini said there was resentment among Congress workers who were loyal to the party. “It was a disappointment to see that those who have no base in the party have been given place in the list while the ones who were dedicated party workers have been ignored,” said Saini, adding an emergency meeting had been called today. “We are waiting for MLA OP Soni and after having a dialogue with him, we will decide our next course of action,” he said. District Congress chief Jugal Kishore said at least 33 seats were reserved for women and seven to eight new faces had been included in the list. “We had conducted a survey in advance. A balanced approach has been adopted after taking into consideration while preparing the list,” he said. The List |

Portions of Rodae Shah Colony, Chota Haripura which are a part of the ward are lesser developed than areas such as Jwala estate and Islamabad. There is a road in Chota Haripura, which connects areas of Bhootanpura, Haripura and Kishan Kot, remains unpaved. "The sewerage under the road was laid only a few months back. May be the material used was not of good quality. The road has collapsed at few places. A big pothole has developed," complained a resident. The flyover constructed from Jwala floor mill to Punjab and Sindh Bank, Islamabad, has resulted in traffic jams in the area. Residents complained that the area is often water logged due to poor planning. As manholes are not on the same level as that of the road, residents meet with accidents especially when the road is water logged. "People especially on two-wheelers and rickshaw have had accidents," said a resident. The power corporation has too failed to take notice of the over-head electricity wires. A three-phase high voltage electricity wires in Haripura area were seen hanging just eight feet above the ground. Residents rued that big vehicles cannot enter such a street. Despite all these problems, residents said there have been works which were carried out in the ward.

Costly fuel is here to stay, time for some alternative way

The first example could be the e-bikes ferrying visitors around the Golden Temple. An initiative of the Akal Purakh Ki Fauj, an NGO, these battery-operated vehicles were the first energy efficient means of transport being used in Amritsar. They are free for all and have been running non-stop since past two years. "We have two vehicles ferrying visitors to the Golden Temple. With a battery charging time of 6 hours, these carts run for 14-15 hours a day, without failing. They are very efficient," says Jaswinder Singh Advocate, director, Akal Purakh Ki Fauj. The purpose of running them on road was to introduce the city to more eco-friendly and non-combusting means of transport. "These vehicles are a one-time investment with almost zero maintenance. And what better than the fact that we don't have to worry about fuel prices. I hope the administration puts more such vehicles to use, which could also fight the traffic menace," says Jaswinder. The concept of electric vehicles or battery-operated vehicles was considered a fad that would soon pass by. But then inflation happened and so did the fuel price hike. "China has over 150 million electric two-wheelers on road and Europe has 18 million. India comes low on list with just 2,00,000 such vehicles. We need to consider them as our only way to save, whether its fuel or money," shares Jaswinder. Peddling his way to some health and savings is Dr NS Neki, whose only mode of transport is his cycle. "Amritsar is a very closely connected city and the distances are short. So riding a cycle becomes easy, on pocket as well," says the HoD, Medicine at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. He has started the City Cycling Club and wants everyone to adopt this healthy habit. "Fuel prices will go on rising and the smart option is to change our dependency on petrol. It's better to ride a bicycle rather than going bankrupt paying for the fuel," he explains. Another smart saver is Deepak Babbar, director, Mission Aghaaz, an NGO working towards environment conservation. Through his initiatives, they popularise and promote the use of healthier modes of transport like cycle. "I make sure to rest my car at least once a week and travel on a bicycle. This once a week exercise saves me at least Rs 500 on fuel and keeps me fit," he shares. Deepak too advises to opt for energy-friendly vehicles. "E-bikes are a good option; they have a good speed and efficient working. There are hydra bikes, solar bikes that come with solar parking set up with photovoltaic panels and many such options available now. But not everyone is open to such technology. But we can always adopt some healthy habits," he says. |
