Kin protest against patient’s death, allege negligence
Amritsar, May 24
They raised slogans against the hospital management, the doctors under whose supervision the patient was being treated and demanded action against those responsible for the death of Major Singh, who was admitted in the hospital in the afternoon yesterday. Even as senior police officials were informed about the mob going on a rampage, the police reached the spot very late, the doctors alleged. Punjab Singh, the son of the deceased, alleged that his father was admitted to the hospital with a high blood pressure and pain in the chest. He said he was admitted in the medicine unit - II headed by Dr Pritam Singh. He said in the evening the hospital authorities asked them to leave as the condition of Major Singh improved. However, he alleged that in the morning his father complained of severe pain in the chest and was admitted in the hospital at 5 am. But till 7.30 am no senior doctor called on him even after repeated requests. He said the doctors attending on him asked them to bring some medicines and injections. He said as soon as the junior doctors injected the drug, his father collapsed and died. Dr Satpal, medical superintendent of the hospital, said it was the family of the deceased who had insisted to take the patient back home against the doctor's advice. He said if the doctors had discharged Major Singh, then the family must have the discharge slip. But they could not produce the same. Further, he said the enraged family members misbehaved with the doctors and hospital staff besides damaging the property of the hospital, including ventilator pipes. He said Major Singh was admitted with a cardiac problem and was under going treatment in the ward of Dr Pritam Singh. He said when condition of the patient improved in the evening, the family members insisted to take him home even as the doctors advised against it. He said in the morning he suffered a heart attack and the doctors who were present at that time tried to revive the patient by injecting him drugs unnecessarily, but the patient died. The GNDH authorities have formed a three-member panel to probe into the death. Dr Satpal said Dr Santokh Singh, Dr Sudhir Khichi and Dr Arora have been designated to investigate the case. He said appropriate action will be taken against the doctors if any negligence was found during the investigations. |
MC comes up with policy for safety of sewermen
Amritsar, May 24 Lashing out at the policy of the Amritsar Municipal Corporation (AMC) for not providing them with any safety equipment, hundreds of sewermen, hire don temporarily basis by the AMC, today lodged a protest at Mulechuk village where their colleagues were cremated. Officials of the AMC claimed that all safety equipments were present but it was the casual approach of the sewermen themselves which had resulted in the tragedy. Sewermen, under the banner of Amritsar Nagar Nigam Union, alleged that since they were engaged on daily wage basis, the AMC had never provided them with safety suits, belts or oxygen masks. Narinder Sharma, the organising secretary of the union, said there are over 500 sewer men associated with the AMC on a temporary basis at a daily wage of Rs 190. "They all face a threat to their lives everyday because in the absence of any safety equipment they have no choice but to perform their job 10-15 feet deep in the manholes amidst toxic gases. Same tragedies had occurred in the past too but the authorities had turned a blind eye and have never provided safety equipment, he alleged. Parduman Singh, XEN-3, said the AMC had all the safety equipment and that no discrimination was being meted out to any of the staff members, whether hired on a temporary or permanent basis. He said the AMC has the safety equipment, including gas masks, safety shoes and safety belts, which were issued to the zonal in-charges under whose jurisdiction all sewer de-silting jobs were performed. “Human life is the most important to us. It was a very tragic incident. But no frivolous issue should be raised which has no basis," he claimed. "The lapse on our part was that we never bothered to watch that the sewermen were observing the safety precautions before performing their job. But now onwards, we have devised a policy to ensure the safety of the sewer men. According to new policy, the zonal in charge, (of the level of Junior Engineer), would be held responsible for ensuring the safety of the sewer men. “A manhole is around 15 feet deep. It is mandatory to observe all safety procedure to avoid toxic gases emanating from sewer lines. The in-charge concerned will get the safety equipments issued from the store in his name and will ensure that the sewer men observe all safety rules. The sewer lid will have to be kept open for at least two hours before someone gets in," said Parduman Singh. Official speak A manhole is around 15 feet deep. MC POLLS GS Paul Tribune News Service
Amritsar, May 24 Hardly 10 metres away from the entrance gate of this government-aided Arya Girls Senior Secondary School, Lahori Gate (Khu Bambewala), a garbage dumping yard is situated because of which most filthy conditions prevail here. The residents are also exposed to various ailments. The AMC teams have so far failed to locate any other “suitable” alternative site for this garbage yard, besides the entrance gate of the school. Solid waste from areas like Katra Sher Singh, the telephone exchange, Katra Moti Ram Tikoni Park, Lohgarh Gate and up to Guru Bazaar is dumped here before it is transported to the solid waste management plant at Bhagtanwala. Despite repeated pleas by the school authorities as well as the residents, this garbage dumping site is yet to be shifted from here. Facility of a sewerage system is needed the most here while rampant encroachment is another problem being faced by the residents. “Rodents play havoc with the sewerage system in several parts of the area, which has the railway station and Durgiana Temple besides several areas of the walled city from Hathi Gate to Lohgarh Gate. The sewerage system remains choked or blocked every now and then while the authorities have so far failed to solve the problem. Blatant violation of the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders in the shape of encroachments in every nook and corner of the ward has not caught the eye of the authorities. The railway link road outside the railway station is a perfect example of this menace where encroachments resumed after the drive launched by the MC authorities. Other areas that fall in the ward are Khu Bambe wala, Katra Moti Ram, Hindustan Basti, Lohgarh, Durgiana Abadi, Railway Colonies, Railway link road and Bhandari Bridge. The ward consists of three parks, including Tikoni Park, Katra Moti, Bombaywala Khuh and near Arya Samaj School. However, these parks are not properly lit. Residents of several parts also complain about water shortage as the three tubewells in the ward have been out of order for a long time. Councillor Speak
Like councillors of other Congress wards, Parveen Kanwar alleged discriminatory attitude on part of the present government. “We hardly get any funds for development works just because I represent the Congress party. We have even filed a writ petition in the district court, the hearing of which is expected after a lapse of two years. The residents of my ward are deprived of even the basic amenities, a good standard of living is far fetched,” she said. The issue was taken up with the civic authorities a number of times and despite getting a nod from the house or installing stones, no development work has been carried out in the ward. Residents speak It’s a lame excuse that the Congress councillors are discriminated against. When the Congress was in power, we had Congress councillor Rajinder Bhalla, who could not even lay the 30-feet wide road. Illegal encroachments on the roads have made our lives hell. — NS Gabarhia, a resident of Railway Station area It is difficult to sit in the classrooms because of constant pungent smell in the area, especially during the monsoon. We cannot pass through the site without covering our nose. — Sunita Sharma, Principal Arya girls senior secondary school The open drains remain choked with solid waste and are the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies. Solid waste should go directly to the solid waste management plant to get rid of the unbearable stink. — Anil Khanna, a resident of gali Baganwali Water supply is the major issue here. For the past three years, we have been compelled to drink contaminated stinky water. The reason is that sewerage water gets mixed with the supply line. — Veena Vyal, a resident of Katra Moti Ram Due to a lack of water disposal system, the rain water gets collected on the streets. It even enters our houses and there is always a fear of short circuiting. — Alka, a resident of Khu Bambewala |

Amritsar, May 24 A crazy hairdo and wacky attire are striking, but what about your nails? Well, they are the next big thing on fashion radar. Going by the trendy designs women are flaunting, the spring just ordered up abundance of ways to get your lacquer on. “Most people experiment a lot with hairstyles and dresses, but play it safe with nail colours. This is the right time to add style to your nails and make a statement as nail art is gaining popularity as a fashion accessory this summer,” says Shruti, a nail artist from the city. “Nail art has graduated from being just a combination of hues, there are various designs that incorporate the use of nail stickers and nail jewellery to further enhance the nail. Water marbling is another popular technique along with the use of stencils, rhinestones and crushed shells,” shares Shruti. Making a profound fashion statement, girls in city have become fans, hands down. “From regular nail art that involves a mix of different nail colours to intricate designs, we get regular customers interested in transforming their nails into a body of work. While the regular ones cost anything between Rs 250-500, the more intricate designs fetch up to Rs 2,000,” says Rucha Aggarwal, another nail artist from the city. Working with a popular nail art salon in the city, Rucha believes that fashion’s first impression is made through nails. “The first thing we do when meeting people is shake hands, and if our hands are not manicured and groomed what kind of impression will we give to the other person? "Most of the time we look at our hands and not face, so it is important to make them look good to feel good." Going exotic with Chinese nail art and innovative with 3D caviar nail art that comes with a pot of teeny colourful ‘caviar’ pearls that can be poured onto freshly painted nails then gently pressed down, it’s not just fashion anymore but shear luxury. “I got my nails done on my recent visit to China and I swear by their brilliant techniques and art,” says Baljeet Johal, city-based anchor and actor. “They use materials such as gelatine, gum Arabic and bee’s wax and the glitters and gels along with the airbrushed techniques give perfect finish and it stays till two-three months,” she says. Hers is done intricately in silver glitter colour that has pearls and semi-precious stones encrusted on it. “I have been getting lot of compliments for it,” she proudly exclaims. But these compliments have cost her whooping Rs 25,000. |
