Two persons could not file nominations for Nagar Panchayat
Muktsar, May 24 Jagjeet Singh and Nanak Singh, who were willing to contest the elections from ward number 3, alleged that when they went to the local police station to lodge a complaint in this regard, the police refused, which led them to block the road. Talking to media persons, they accused Jaspal Singh Marar, son of Sukhdarshan Marar, with tearing their nomination papers, saying, "We were on way to the returning officer's room, when he intercepted us and tore the nomination papers." It may be mentioned that today was the last day for filing the nominations. Meanwhile, Karan Kaur Brar, MLA, Muktsar, said, "The Akalis even tried to stop our candidates. But I personally went there to get their nominations filed." "It is really sad that the two, who wanted to file their nominations, could not do so, because some people tore their papers. I demand that the elections for this ward should be cancelled and a fresh date be issued so that everyone could file nominations," Brar said. She also clarified that the two, who could not file their nominations, did not belong to the Congress but added that after the incident, she decided to support them. Meanwhile, some senior officials of the district administration reached the spot and assured the protesters that action would be taken on their complaint. Following the assurance, the protest was lifted. Repeated attempts to contact Sukhdarshan Singh Marar proved
to be futile. |

PMET hints at changing educational priorities
Faridkot, May 24 If in PMET-2011, it was 8,759 students who took the exam, in PMET-2012, the number of students aspiring to be a doctor, increased to 11,647. Last year, 2194 students qualified for the medical entrance test but this time, the number of these students is 4,144. To qualify the test, every general category student needs to score a minimum of 50 per cent marks and the score of 40 per cent is mandatory for the SC/BC category student, said Sat Pal, Deputy Registrar, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) which conducted the PMET-2012 on Sunday to fill the 1070 seats for MBBS and 1190 seats for BDS in the medical colleges of Punjab. In the general category, a total of 3362 students qualified in the PMET. In SC category, it was 515 candidates and 267 in the BC category, said the Deputy Registrar. Punjab has nine medical colleges and 14 dental colleges. If last year, the total percentage of students who qualified in the test was less than 25, this year, the percentage increased to over 35. Though the total number of seats in the medical colleges of Punjab has also increased in the last one year, from 770 to 1070 in MBBS and 1090 to 1190 in BDS, the increase is comparatively much lower than the increase in the number of engineering colleges in the state, revealed sources in the BFUHS. Because of the increasing number of engineering colleges in the country, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has even decided not to approve new engineering colleges from the academic year 2013-14. "As several state governments have requested us not to clear the applications for starting new engineering college, so the decision was taken," said AICTE member secretary, KP Isaac. As private engineering colleges are dotting every nook and corner of Punjab, so engineering is getting down to a graduation course and people are getting into diverse fields other than engineering, said a highly place officer in the BFUHS.
