Mad rush at tehsildar’s office
Jalandhar, March 29 Hundreds of city residents who apprehend an increase in the collector rate after March 31 have been making a beeline to the office of the tehsildar in a bid to get the registries of their land done. Owing to the rush, the staff had to bolt the doors of the office from inside. The maximum number of applicants included those owning properties in colonies established by the Jalandhar Improvement Trust or PUDA, wherein the first allottees are to be charged stamp duty on the basis of the original allotment of land rates till March 31. “From April 1 onwards, they will be charged on the then prevalent collector rates,” tehsildar-1 Yash Pal Sharma said while explaining the reasons for the mad rush. The applicants said that even depositing the stamp duty had become a cumbersome job as there was a huge rush at authorised banks, too. Manmohan, a resident of Saraswati Vihar, said the entire process involved too many formalities and it had been days since he had been on his job. “I have my fingers crossed hoping that the work finally gets accomplished today,” he said. Interestingly, many applicants were women since the stamp duty is 1 per cent less if the landowner is a woman (7 per cent instead of 8 per cent of collector rate in MC areas and 4 per cent instead of 5 per cent of collector rate outside city limits). Pammi Rani had come from Sheikhe Pind for getting the registry of her land done. There were many other women waiting on benches outside with their kids for their turn for photography or signatures as their male counterparts were busy winding up the remaining paperwork. Sources in the administration said the collector rates were likely to increase with a meeting called by the Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Collector in this regard tomorrow. |
Mayor passes MC Budget without discussion
Jalandhar, March 29 Mayor Rakesh Rathour answered a few questions raised by councillors and passed the budget without any discussion with the consent of SAD-BJP councillors. He had earlier also not accepted any question claiming that there will be no Zero Hour and a general meeting will be held in the next five days. Congress councillor Balraj Thakur quizzed the Mayor and officials on payments due in favour of contractors. “Why have the liabilities not been cleared?” he asked. He also said as to why no separate allocation had been done for the digitization of various departments which would have helped in ensuring transparency and rooting out corruption more effectively. Aruna Arora, also a Congress councillor, asked as to why the MC was not able to increase its revenue and was largely dependent on loans. As this happened, BJP councillor Joginder Singh Tony asked the Mayor to declare the budget passed. The Mayor, who had already held a budget discussion with councillors of the ruling party at his official residence yesterday, immediately did so. With just 10 Congress councillors present and the SAD-BJP being in clear majority, they perhaps could do nothing about the same. MLA candidates absent
None of the two Congress councillors, including Rajinder Beri and Dinesh Dhall, and BSP councillor Hans Raj Rana, who had contested the recent Assembly polls, appeared for the Budget meeting on Thursday. Pawan Gupta, son of Congress leader Raj Kumar Gupta, whose papers were rejected, too, abstained from the meeting. SAD councillor Kuldeep Singh Oberoi, who had withdrawn his papers as an independent candidate, however, attended the meeting. |
Organised prostitution on rise
Jalandhar, March 29 Investigations by The Tribune revealed that breaking all barriers, not only the non-resident Indians (NRIs), but youngsters, both male and female, from high profile families also are getting into the illegal trade. Being an NRI belt, the trade has flourished in this part of the region in connivance with hoteliers and their links with the kingpins of flesh trade. Senior police officials, however, apprehend that hoteliers had been providing prostitutes as well as the aphrodisiacs drugs to their customers on demand. Addition Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) HPS Khakh said flesh trade was going on in various hotels in connivance with local politicians in a well organised way. In the recent incidents in Hotel Rama and Hotel City Castle, the police found that both the victims took Viagra pills and consumed alcohol. The CCTV footage clearly showed that they had been accompanying women during the nights before their death, Khakh added. He claimed that hoteliers were not abiding by the guidelines (to take identity proofs of customers before giving room for them) that the police had issued after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Jai Jaikar Singh, drug inspector, said the sale of aphrodisiacs drugs have witnessed a sharp increase in this part of the region and people have been using Viagra as a 'pleasure drug' instead of a 'prescribed drug'. At present, the book is in the last stages and we are looking forward to its release on the birth anniversary of Baba Bilga,” he said. No check on butcheries’ remains being thrown on GT Road
Jalandhar, March 29 Though the issue was brought to the notice of authorities concerned, but no action was taken, following which remains of butcheries is still being thrown on one side of the GT Road. While the exact defaulters are not known, residents of the adjoining areas of Rama Mandi claim that it is the residents of the Bhoor Mandi situated along the GT Road who had been throwing the butcheries’ remains adjacent to the main entrance gate of the Vajra Corps Headquarters. A majority of the Bhoor Mandi residents till date have been continuing with the butchery work and throwing the remains alongside the road. Surprisingly, the cantonment board authorities had been asking the Bhoor Mandi residents to abstain from this practice, but to no avail. Daily commuters and the passersby maintain that many a time the butcheries’ remains can be spotted thrown in the open and sometimes it is packed in sacks and left on the side of the road. “If the district administration is conducting a survey of the dog bite cases in villages, they should also solve this problem as it has remained unnoticed all these years,” said Praveen Dhillon, a resident of the cantonment. Since none of the authorities, namely Jalandhar Cantonment Board, district administration and the Municipal Corporation, took any action, the problem has worsened with foul smell emanating from the dump and stray dogs and eagles roaming in the area. “Probably, this why the number of stray dogs dying in accidents on the GT road is quite high. A large number of ferocious dogs in the area poses threat to the commuters,” said Avinash Singh, resident of Rama Mandi. Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti on March 22 had asked the Block Development and Panchayat Officers (BDPOs) to start a census of stray dogs in their villages and identify places where carcasses of dead animals were being dumped. The action was taken followed by the recent spate in the number of dog bite cases in the rural belts of the district. Bharti had also directed the BDPOs to compile the list of the places where skinning of the animals was being done. |
