Tough fight relegates celebration plans
Jalandhar, March 5 Leaders in the SAD camp claim that even if they win a few seats in the district, there will be no celebrations until it will be an overall comeback of the party at the state-level. On the other hand, not all BJP leaders are confident. Asked about his plans, former Local Bodies Minister and candidate from the Jalandhar (Central) seat Manoranjan Kalia said, “There are no plans as of now. It all depends on what happens tomorrow. I, of course will go to the counting centre early tomorrow morning and see the declaration of results.” Asked as to how he had spent his day today, he responded, “It was like any other day.” His counterpart and Congress councillor Rajinder Beri from the constituency, when asked about his plans, rather expressed confidence, “I do not intend to carry out any roadshow tomorrow as the Election Commission will add the expenditure of every vehicle, which will be part of the convoy, to my poll expenditure. We can always wait for a day to rejoice.” Beri spent most of his day today at religious places in his area. He visited Geeta Mandir at Central Town and then paid obeisance at Anandpur Ashram. He took ashirwad of Bai Ji at the kutia there. Then he went to Gurdwara Guru Teg Bahadur, also at Central Town. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader KD Bhandari, trying his luck from the Jalandhar (North) seat, too seemed sure of his victory. A wrestler, Bhandari, said he had spent good time at the akhara at Devi Talab Mandir today. Regarding tomorrow’s plans, he said, “At 6.30 am we have plans to assemble at Chintpurni Mandir in Birkampura Colony. From there onwards, we will proceed towards Gurdwara Adda Hoshiarpur. By 7 am, we will be at the counting hall of our constituency. Soon after the declaration of the result, we will start a roadshow and first pay go to Devi Talab Mandir.” |
All set for counting of votes for Assembly polls today
Jalandhar, March 5 Over 450 micro-observers, assistant observers and supervisors from banks, LIC and other central government offices have been asked to report at the district administrative complex at 5 am tomorrow. It will be around at that time that the staff of the National Informatics Centre will do assign duties randomly and send the staff to their respective constituencies in buses by 6 am. The counting agents of the political parties have been asked to be in the counting halls by 7 am. The counting will begin at 8 am with postal ballots to be opened at the first place. Arrangements for online reporting, too, have been done with computer systems equipped with Internet already in place. Media centres, too, have been set up in every constituency. All Returning Officers today reviewed the preparations at the counting halls of their respective constituencies. Almost all counting halls today had 14 counting tables with three chairs around. The chairs of the counting agents have been laid right in front with fencing done in between. The arrangement at the counting hall for the Jalandhar (Central) constituency is somewhat different, with tables laid in L-shape at the Raizada Hansraj Stadium unlike other constituencies where the tables will be in a straight line. The three-cordon security arrangements, too, were in place with barricading done before noon today. |

10 booked for kidnapping tantrik’s disciple
Jalandhar March 5 The tantrik’s disciple was kidnapped from his office situated near the ISBT and the accused also demanded ransom from the tantrik to release his disciple. The police said that Shoyab, a tantrik, had promised a resident of Hoshiarpur, Gaurav Handa, that his dreams of going abroad would come true within three days. The youth also gave Rs 2,500 to the tantrik for using his paranormal powers, the police said. After waiting for three days, when the youth did not see any prospects of going abroad, he along with his nine other accomplices arrived at the tantrik’s office and asked for his money. When the tantrik refused to return the money, the youths, who were allegedly carrying sharp-edged weapons, bundled his disciple, Swayam, in their vehicle and fled. On coming to know about the kidnapping, the police sounded an alert in Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. The police intercepted the vehicle on the Arya Samaj road in Hoshiarpur, rescued the victim and arrested the main accused. The other accused managed to flee from the spot. Those still at large have been identified as Harpreet Singh, Ved Parkash, Rohit Kumar, Yash, Monu, Vishal Verma, Vishal, Sourav Tondon and two unidentified youths. The accused have been booked under Section 364-A of the IPC, the police said. |

The ADCP added that the girl was in love with Sonu and was to marry him, but Pritam, who was handling the bus passes work, started sending love signals to the girl. On coming to know about Pritam’s indelicate behaviour, Sonu along with his friend allegedly hacked him to death. The accused girl has been booked under Section 120-B of the IPC. Posted as a senior assistant at the Jalandhar Division No I office of Punjab Roadways, Pritam Singh’s body was found on a cot with throat slit and stab marks on his neck. Confusion prevails over installation of CCTV cameras in exam centres
Jalandhar, March 5 And the reason is obvious. The PSEB has made this announcement at a time when the board exams of classes X and XII are about to begin. While the PSEB class XII board exams are beginning from March 12, the class X exams will start on March 20. Though the PSEB went ahead with its decision to install CCTV cameras, government school authorities are not even aware of this. This decision was taken by the PSEB following a steady rise in the number of copying cases during exams. The move was aimed at curbing this menace in real time monitoring of students through CCTV cameras. Jalandhar Tribune spoke to principals of government schools in the city and the periphery on the issue. Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar, Khushdeep Kaur said she got to know about the PSEB's decision to install CCTV cameras recently. Teachers of the government schools had also criticised the PSEB's decision, saying that each school would have to spend around Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 to install CCTV cameras. Anil Sharma, the principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Gandhi Camp, however, said that installing CCTV cameras was not a big task, but what about the salries of teachers? "It will be of great help in curbing mass copying menace, but in such circumstances, this move of the PSEB sounds non-feasible," he said. Sanjeevan Dhadwal, headmaster of Government High School, Patara, also echoed same views. He said: "The PSEB board exams are beginning from next week while the decision has come this week only. It is possible that during the exams the flying squads might come along with video surveillance teams to record the proceedings of the examination halls, but this move is not practical." Initially, the PSEB had decided to install CCTV cameras in all examination centres but later confined the list to sensitive and border area schools only. The board officials had also claimed that they had withdrawn the decision after poor response from the education department. Both the education department and the managements of private schools had declared that it was not possible for them to meet the expenses of installing CCTV cameras. |
