Kapurthala, February 4
The United Nations office of Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) has opened the country’s first centre to treat drug addicts with methadone treatment like the European countries at the Civil Hospital here. The centre has been set up in collaboration with the National Drug Dependence Treatment centre (NDDTC) of AIIMS.

Soon after the inaugurating the centre on Friday, Principal Secretary, Health, Satish Chandra said the UNODC had decided to open five centres at Kapurthala, Bathinda, Mumbai, Imphal and Delhi this year.

Extensive research in many countries in America, Australia, Europe and Asia has shown that methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) significantly reduces drug use, HIV, Hepatitis B and C transmission among the drug users.

Methadone is the most extensively used medication for long term treatment for those dependent on opioid drugs. MMT also provide drug users an opportunity to restore the balance in psychological, social and occupational sphere of their lives and assist in their rehabilitation into the society.

Drug addicts who administered the drugs with the help of injection will be put on this treatment and would be given Methadone in syrup form daily in the local civil hospital. He said initially this treatment was meant for 50 drug addicts for a period of one year under UNODC programme and later it would be handed over to NACO for its continuation.

Satish Chandra said that Punjab Health department would continue this treatment to check the menace of drug addiction.

On this occasion, Satish Chandra also disclosed that Health department would recruit 34 psychiatrists soon for counselling to the drug addicts and mental disorder patients.
