Clinical staff exempted from election
duty? Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, January 20 Since The Tribune first brought this issue to light in these pages, the Jalandhar Civil Surgeon has issued two letters to the Jalandhar DC on the issue of the cancellation of election duties of the said clinical staff. In the meanwhile, thousands of patients still suffer at various Civil Hospitals and Public Health Centres in the district since the said clinical staff is still undertaking these duties. Recent happenings have left clinical staff members clueless regarding the cancellation of duties. While they say a communication with the Civil Surgeon's Office earlier led them to believe that the duties had been cancelled - following which they were anxiously awaiting their cancellation letters - recent confirmations have brought things back to square one. Importantly, despite a letter from the Director, Health Services, to DCs across the state on the issue, staff members at sensitive areas were assigned election duties. Clinical staff from Bilga, Kala Bakra, Adampur, Jandiala, Shamsher, Shahkot, Bara Pind, Kartarpur, Mehatpur and Phillaur have been assigned election duties. Among pharmacists - out of five on duty at the Bilga PHC, four have been assigned election duties at polling booths. Both pharmacists at the Mehatpur PHC have been assigned duties at polling booths. The only pharmacist at a Nakodar dispensary (there is not doctor there) has been assigned the duty of booth-level officer. For the Civil Hospital Shankar, out of total four, two pharmacists have been assigned BLO duty. From Phillaur, four pharmacists are presently under training for poll duty. Those assigned duties as BLOs claim that their patients have been suffering for months, since they have been working for almost a year (started in March last year) regarding tasks connected to election duties. |

SGPC writes to Centre over
delay in office-bearers’ polls
Amritsar, January 20 In a letter to the Union Home Ministry, the SGPC has brought to its notice the delay and urged it to conduct the elections at the earliest. As per the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925, the office-bearers should be elected within a month of the notification of the new SGPC House. Talking about the delay, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar alleged that the Central Government was deliberately dilly-dallying the issue. He said the Union Home Ministry had issued the notification of the new SGPC House on December 16 and therefore the office-bearers should have been elected before January 15. He said they had sent a communication to the ministry after the period of one-month had expired. He said even the co-option process was also delayed. He said they were also seeking a legal opinion on the issue. The SGPC elections were held on September 18 last year while the results were announced on September 22. The SAD had swept the SGPC polls by winning 157 out of the total 170 seats. The co-option process took place on December 5, in which the SAD succeeded in co-opting its nominees on all 15 seats. There are a total of 191 members in the SGPC House, including Sikh high priests of all the five Takhts and the head priest of the Golden Temple. |
